When this property was proposed for the
National Register, someone wrote the case for it: what the building is,
and why it matters. That document is a federal record in the public domain.
It is quoted below word for word, never summarised. The text was read off the scanned case file by machine, so the
occasional stray character is the recogniser's and the 1970s
typewriter's.
Statement of significance
Palmer, a son, purchased the land from his parents and built the house in 1852. The house and land remained in the Palmer side of the 35 acre lot to the north side. The house was used as offices by the Board until 1954, then converted into a library and While completing repairs in 1965, it was discovered that the house, which was the first frame dwelling in Northfield, was built of employing this construction technique in Ohio, and of those, the horizontal, not vertical, planks. Itis not known how many other the Palmer House is somewhat unique. The origin of horizontal plank wall construction is unclear. An article in a 1971 issue of the Journal of the Society of Architectural today.
Itis not stated, however, when the method first came into to itinerant Canadian carpenters, or may be just a coincidental 1852 Commerce Conservation Communications losophy Architecture Military Science Aboriginal SIGNIFICANCE Theater Industry itarian Landscape Art Invention Music Literature Engineering Transportation Pre-Columbian Canadian construction technique.Itis still widely used in Quebec Political experiment in construction by local carpenters.In either case, Sculpture Education Palmer House is the only one using vertical, rather than horizontal, their exhibits.
