Barris was, of course, immediately suspected, followed and captured, while skulking in the bushes, near his own shanty. He was brought to Akron, and being examined before Justice Jacob Brown, was committed to the Portage county jail, at Ravenna, to answer to the charge of murder. At the May term, 1833, of the Court of Common Pleas for Portage county, an indictment was found against Barris, charging him with deliberate and premeditated murder.

HOUGH not claiming to have much detective talent myself, it was nevertheless my good fortune to have assisted in some very clever detective operations, during my first two terms as Sheriff of Summit county, from November, 1856, to January, 1861. A year or two previous to my accession to that office, the brotherin-law of a wealthy and enterprising farmer, near Loudonville, in Ashland county, had been killed in a neighboring city, by being struck on the head with an iron dray-pin.

| July 2003 | Flash Flood | Countywide | 3 killed, $100,000,000 | Thunderstorms dumped very heavy rains on Summit County causing catastrophic flooding in parts of the county. Rainfall rates exceeded two inches per hour at times during the evening hours. Many streams and creeks left their banks causing widespread flooding. Spotters measured 7.20 inches of rain at Richfield and a gage at Hudson High School record 3 inches of rain between 7:45 and 8:15 p.m. with a storm total of 7.5 inches. Five inches of rain was measured in Stow. Two men drown at approximately 8:50 p.m. in an underground parking garage at an condominium complex located along Atterbury Boulevard in Hudson. Witnesses indicated that the underground garage filled with water in just a few minutes. Nearby Brandywine Creek overfilled it's banks and flooded the complex. The creek rose at the rate of two feet every 10 minutes between 8 and 9 p.m. Flooding reached half way up the first floor of the buildings and around 80 residents of the complex had to be evacuated by boat. Bucket surveys upstream of the complex indicate that as much as 10.4 inches of rain fell on the 21st. A third man was electrocuted and killed while working in his flooded basement. Mud Brook left it's banks in the Merriman Valley neighborhood of northwest Akron and cut off an apartment complex on West Portage Trail. The three bridges leading to the complex were washed out trapping nearly 200 people. A temporary road was built and the residents were finally rescued late on the 22nd. Flooding also occurred in Twinsburg, Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, Peninsula, Copley, Bath, Boston Heights, Green and Stow. In Twinsburg, Tinkers Creek went into flood and damaged several dozens homes and businesses. Over 400 homes were damaged in Cuyahoga Falls by flooding. Most of the homes were in neighborhoods along 6th, 7th and Kilarney Streets. An automated rain gage in the area measured 4.60 inches of rain. Flooding affected large sections of Silver Lake and Stow forcing the evacuation of dozens of people. Spotters in Stow measured 6.28 inches of rain. Over 500 homes and around 30 businesses were damaged in Stow. Ten of the homes sustained major damage. People had to rescued from motor vehicles all over the county as hundreds of roads and bridges were either washed out or flooded. Flooding in Boston Township was the worst since 1913. Over $1 million in damages occurred to public property and roads in Hudson. Another $1.5 million in damages occurred to roads elsewhere in Summit County. Over 300 homes in the county sustained enough damage to be declared destroyed or uninhabitable. As many as 1,000 other homes and businesses sustained lesser damages. Damage estimates for the county top $100 million. |

| July 2013 | Flash Flood | Barberton | $15,000,000 | Torrential rainfall on July 10th ended the streek of 13 days of measurable rain in the Barberton-Norton region, and ending it with the highest rainfall amounts measuring during that time. Almost seven inches of rain fell in the two weeks prior, and on the 10th rainfall amounts in the basin measured between 2 to 3 inches which fell in the hour between 230 and 330 PM. This extreme rainfall rate fell over already saturated ground and swollen stream and creeks, resulting in rapid runoff and flooding. Heavy rainfall of this magnitude overwhelmed the existing stormwater systems with extensive street flooding throughout Barberton. In many areas of Barberton the flooded streets drained within a few hours leaving many flooded basements, garages and yards. After the flash flooding had stopped, the upstream routed water caused the flood waters to continue a slow rise in Barberton. These areas began flooding during the night of July 10 and by the morning of July 11th flooding was reaching into new areas. Flood waters in most areas receded by Sunday July 14th leaving behind large areas of the City needing clean-up operations. The City estimates that over 700 buildings suffered some form of water intrusion including sewage backups.||14TH, 15TH & 16TH STREETS NW WOLF CREEK|Flooding began during the intense rain on the afternoon of July 10th and the area remained underwater for three days. The flooding closed bridges across Wolf Creek at Wooster Road West, Brady Ave., Norton Ave., and Barber Road in the City of Norton leaving only the Hopocan Ave. bridge crossing Wolf Creek in Barberton accessible. Over sixty businesses and residences reported flooding issues.|||NORTON AVE. BARBER ROAD, MIAMI ST. - WOLF CREEK|Rising waters of Wolf Creek over the night of July 10-11 flooded the commercial area on Norton Ave. Residents of the Shamrock Motel were evacuated on July 11 and businesses along the north side of Norton Ave. experienced up to two feet of flooding. Over thirty business and residences experienced flooding problems.||30th and 31ST STREETS NW, SOUTH AVE. - HUDSON RUN |Hudson Run experienced a rapid rise in floodwaters during the heavy rainfall in northwest Barberton and Norton. The return frequency for a rainfall event of this magnitude and duration is estimated around a 500 year event. Two adults needed to be rescued from a flooded basement on Dwight Street. Some roads near the Cuyahoga Valley sustained significant damage from overflowing creeks. |The City Hall sustained major damage as an estimated 30,000 gallons of water entirely from urban runoff filled their basement damaging $500,000 worth of computers. In Macedonia, 60 homes were damaged including two that were destroyed and 15 others were damaged enough to be declared uninhabitable. The most severe damage in the county occurred in the Glenwood Preserve neighborhood on the north side of Twinsburg. Extensive damage was done on Andover Drive and Deeplake Circle where several homes were leveled and a total of 45 homes damaged. Damage estimates in Twinsburg alone were well over $5 million. The damage path was continuous and about 100 yards in width. Dozens of cars were damaged or destroyed and hundreds of trees and power poles downed in Summit County. |

A cooperative observer in Cuyahoga Falls measured 3.39 inches of rain during that same period. This rain combined with ground already saturated from earlier storms led to the renewal of widespread flooding in the county. The Coventry, Copley, Tallmadge, Cuyahoga Falls, Barberton, Stow and Norton areas were among the worst damaged in the county. Flooding in some of these cities was reported to be the worst in over 30 years. In Barberton and Norton, extensive flooding occurred after Wolf Creek left it's banks. A dam on Hudson Run was nearly destroyed after flood waters began flowing around the dam. Water on some streets was reported to be as much as three feet deep. Over $1 million in damage occurred along Barber Road in Norton after 20 homes and 23 businesses were flooded. Several culverts were washed out in both Norton and Barberton. Several people were evacuated from homes along Pardee and Graham Roads in Stow around 2 a.m. Dozens of roads in the county had to be closed because of washouts or significant flooding. Damage to roads and other government property from the storms on the 21st and 22nd topped $2.2 million. Hundreds of private residences and businesses sustained flood damage. Initial estimates that as many as 500 homes sustained significant damage. Dozens of vehicles were also damaged. |

Thousands of trees and dozens of utility poles were reported down in Richfield, Boston, Sagamore Hills and Twinsburg Townships. The damage was most concentrated in the Twinsburg area with hundreds of homes loosing roofing or siding. Many other homes and buildings were damaged by fallen trees. Many vehicles were also damaged by flying debris or downed trees or limbs. There were numerous reports of roads and streets blocked by fallen trees or power lines. A 30,000 volt high power tension line was blown down along Liberty Road near Irena Lane in Twinsburg. The damage in the county extended as far south as Cuyahoga Falls and even Tallmadge. Widespread power outages were reported and school districts in the area had to close on November 6th because of blocked roads and the power outages. Up to 25,000 customers lost power from this storm. It took five days for power to fully restored and weeks for the storm damage to be cleaned up. |

The magnitude and intensity of the rainfall have a return frequency of a 500 year event. Infrastructure was overwhelmed by the runoff throughout the community. The hardest hit area was near State Route 91 and State Route 59 intersection where several businesses were damaged including a car dealership with 70 cars. The Holy Family Church and School sustained $3,000,000 in damages. Two homes suffered structural failures, one estimated as 4,000 square feet in size. There was a debris slide at the Silver Lakes Condominium Complex on SR 59 covering the parking lot with several feet of mud. North River Road sustained a complete washout. There was a sinkhole at Wilbur Drive covering half the road. A fire station and business was inundated with several inches of water on Hudson Drive. The Silver Lake Elementary Schools, Bolich Middle and High Schools were all damaged and closed. In all, at least 100 homes were damaged. A number of water rescues were conducted by no serious injuries reported. The flood was comparable to the 2003/2004 floods, but was expected to result in the worst monetary damages than either of those significant events. |

A spotter in Twinsburg reported over 5 inches of rain fell in 75 minutes beginning around 4 p.m. Two day storm totals from across the county included: 5.75 inches in Twinsburg; 3.30 inches in Macedonia; 3.18 inches in Bath; 2.90 inches at Portage Lakes; 2.76 inches in Munroe Falls and 2.62 at Akron Fulton Airport. Runoff from this rain caused flash flooding to quickly develop during the late afternoon hours of the 22nd. Extensive flooding was reported near the intersection of the Ohio Turnpike and State Route 21 in Richfield Township. Roads in this area were flooded by as much as two feet of water and a hotel sustained extensive damage from water flowing through it's ground floor. A lot of flooding was also reported north of Peninsula and in Twinsburg. In Twinsburg, flood water were as much as four feet deep and at least four motorists had to be rescued from their vehicles. Dozens of homes in Adams Park area were damaged by flooding. Near Peninsula, considerable damage was done to a scenic railroad track. Later in the evening, a ski resort along Riverview Road was heavily damaged by flash flooding. Dozens of roads and streets in the northern half of the county had to be closed because of flooding. Several hundred homes and businesses were damaged, mainly by basement flooding. |

An automated sensor at the Akron Fulton Airport measured a storm total of 3.84 inches of rain. Of this total, 2.14 inches fell between 3 and 4 p.m. with another 1.41 inches between 4 and 5 p.m. A spotter in Cuyahoga Falls measured an inch of rain during an eight minute period just before 5 p.m. A storm total of around 6 inches was measured in Lakemore. Significant urban flooding occurred across the county as sewer systems quickly became overwhelmed. Runoff from the rain also caused rapid rises in area streams and rivers. The Akron, Tallmadge, Cuyahoga Falls and Lakemore areas were especially hard hit as dozens of roads including Interstates 76 and 77 became flooded. Hundreds of homes were damaged by flooding and numerous vehicles were stranded in the flood waters which were up to three deep at some locations. The worst flooding in the county occurred in Lakemore and surrounding Springfield Township. About three quarters of the streets in the village were flooded. Front Street was closed for 12 blocks and was reported to be flowing like a "river." Significant flooding also occurred on Lakeside Drive, Lake Road, Sanitarium Road, First Street, Seventh Street, Seneca Trail, Pawnee Boulevard, Main Street, Meadows Drive, Chelsea Drive and Michaels Drive. Around 50 homes had to be evacuated in Lakemore where two homes were classified as being destroyed. Another 10 homes in Lakemore had major structural damage with about 100 more sustaining lesser damages. Several hundred homes elsewhere in the county sustained damage, mainly from basement flooding. Traffic in Summit County was brought to a standstill during the evening rush hour because of this event. |

The town of Copley also experienced significant flooding along the Pigeon Creek where the heaviest rain fell. An apartment complex was inundated and rescues were made. Hundreds of homes and businesses experienced basement flooding with a few first floors inundated as well. In the town of Green residents testified to a historic flood in Spade Road area. |

Up to three feet of 04water submerged some streets and up to six feet flooded many basements. The most significant impacts were from the Wolf Creek which flows south through Barberton. Flooding on 14th Street Northwest had up to 6 feet of water in their basements. Barber Road off ramp from I-76 was closed due to flooding. Miller Road between Brecksville and Barr Road, another main thruway was closed due to flooding. Several home and business owners were evacuated. |

As the tornado moved southeastward through Barberton, softwood trees were uprooted between Morgan Street and West Summit Street, just west of Orchard Ave, and along Grandview Ave, just northwest of the intersection with 5th Street NE. Farther to the southeast in Barberton, the tornado uprooted several hardwood trees which then fell onto and damaged three homes along Wisteria Drive. As the tornado progressed through the Portage Lakes area, at least 200 trees were lost in the Bramblewood Estates, between Quail Ridge Circle and OH 619. Nearby, softwood and hardwood trees were either snapped or uprooted at and near Turkeyfoot Lake Golf Links. The tornado then entered Green, where hardwood trees were uprooted along Arlington Road, about 0.10 miles south of Harring Road, and along Golden Wood Way, where a tree fell onto a garage and caused extensive damage to the home. Farther to the southeast, the tornado snapped multiple softwood trees at a cemetery along Thursby Road and peeled away portions of a barn's roof along Thursby Road, just south of Greensburg Road. Soon thereafter, the tornado dissipated at the intersection of Thursby Road and Discovery Road. No fatalities or injuries occurred. |

Teachers sand bagged doors to prevent water from getting into the school. Rainfall reports from that day indicate that between 1.5 and 4.0 inches of rain fell across the area. However, a few reports from the Portage Lakes area indicate that as much as 4.0 inches of rain fell across the area over the 24 hour period ending around 4pm on the 20th. Further investigation of rainfall reports shows that one reporting station in Portage Lakes measured 1.5 inches of rain between 9:30 am and 10:00 am that morning alone. |
