When this property was proposed for the National Register, someone wrote the case for it: what the building is, and why it matters. That document is a federal record in the public domain. It is quoted below word for word, never summarised. The text was read off the scanned case file by machine, so the occasional stray character is the recogniser's and the 1970s typewriter's.

Description of the property

The interior of the housewas extensively remodeled in 1956,establishing the two date. A gently rising lane approaches the home and encircles it.It sits off the road Openings in the house are attenuated 1/l light double hung windows with bracketed 5 bay by 5 bay stretcher bond brick structure which sits on a rock-faced ashlar stone Xexcellent shape near the tri-county line of Union, Logan and Champaign Counties. It is a 2 story "1877-S. Clark." There are five chimneys on the house, all with corbeling and detail. carved stone lintels with keystones and lug sills.
Some of the carving in the house The Fort is an outstanding rural Italianate farmhouse of symmetrical, yet irregular plan they do not contribute to the architectural merit of the property because of their late unexposed deteriorated and is visible from miles around. - prehistoric _ sculpture X architecture _ art - music X 1800-1899 _ commerce -politics/government other (specify) rolling farmland which surrounds it, and is visible from miles around. Architectural highlights include the decorative slate roof, elaborate cornice, ornamental porches the county seat. It is also significant for its association with Shepherd Clark, a major breeder of Norman draft-horses who was renowned within the state. Champaign County, the son of Angus Clark, an important frontier settler in the township.

Statement of significance

(in one paragraph) According to the county history,"there may be seen on his place some of the best _industry most perfectly deserves the true old name of home Areas of Significance-Check and justify below Shepherd Clark was born June 7,1832,on the old homestead farm in Rush Township, literature - religion - archeology-historic x agriculture exploration/settlement _ - philosophy settled in Allamakee County, Iowa, and there remained for a period of four years, after assisting in its cultivation. In 1867 he purchased the present farmstead, which comprises The family residence, which was erected in 1877, at a cost the most attractive rural homes in the county". The same description went on to say that and carved stone lintels.
The 1895 county history claimed that it was "unexcelled by Percheron or Norman horses to be found in the State". He was also an active worker in 1400-1499 1877 1500-1599 landscape architecture The farm was designated by the name of Green Bush.The char- this section of the State.
