The design of the Buena Vista Road bridge has been identified as a Marsh rainbow arch, named for its designer and patentee, James B. Marsh. The patent was issued in when Marsh was president of his own engineering company in Des Moines, Iowa. Bridges of this type were popular from the time of the patent until the early particularly in the midwest of the United States but a few examples are found outside that region. GA-143 (page 3) The railing is comprised of vertical columns between upper and lower handrails, sPp~rated at approximately 10' intervals by rail posts (Figures 4 and 5). These sections are referred to as handrail spaces (Figure 4, Plate 3>. There are eight approach span guardrail end posts, slightly larger and more elaborate than rail posts (Figure 6a~ b, and c). Four of these are located in pairs at the outer ends of the spans, and four are placed at the hasPs of the arches, marking the approach to the arch span :lt~-;elf, sections of the entire length of the bridge: there are ten vertical columns per bay in the outer eight bays, nine in each bay approaching the arch span, and eight per bay within the central four bays of the arch span itself (Figure 3).

In contrast, the concrete rainbow bridge design is rare, and construction of his rainbow arch bridge mostly in the mid-west of the United States from when he patented the design, until the mid-thirties. He died in Des Moines in rainbow arch bridges were constructed by Marsh; apparently he had no direct contact with the Buena Vista Road Bridge. Research to date reveals that the only bridge he built in the southeast is near Alexandria, Louisiana.

It should be stressed here that the bridge' design was in general use only for approximately 20 years. A relatively large number of rainbow arch bridges were built during this short time, but the survivors are now comparatively ~ewy and certainly diagnostic of the early, and energetic, days of road and bridqe building in America. The design was superseded in the mid-30s with the beam style bridge. It seems to be nothing more than coincidence that the passing of popularity of the rainbow arch design coincided with the death of Marsh. Although not all State Highway Department inventories of historic bridges are complete, Kansas and Iowa seem to have the g~eatest number of Marsh bridges, many of which have been ' . GA-143 (page 6) declared eligible or placed on the National Register of Historic Whereas the Marsh rainbow bridge was popular, especially in the mid-west, during a twenty year period, that particular style cannot be considered common or ordinary when the number of Marsh bridges is balanced against the amount of other kinds of historic bridges (metal truss, for example>.
