This handsome framedwelling is a fine example of the amalgamation of the Victorian Gothic and Italianate styles, a comparatively rare residential form in Arlington. The curved line of its porch's bracings is countered by the triangular shape of its steeply pitched gable. its windows are fully enframed with bracketed caps. In the center of the gable is a pine tree window.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE (Explain the role owners played in local or state history and how the building relates to the development of the conmmity.) Theodore B. Merrick, an instructor at the Institute of Technology (now M.I.T.) in an area that was primarily farmland until the mid-1870s. After this time, a number of handsome homes were built as the area grew increasingly popular. with well-to-do commuters. After Merrick's occupanicy,it was for many years the home of George Tewksbury. He is listed in the Artington Directory as a "promoter, Studio Building in Boston."
