Statement of significance
With the completion of the canal system in Ohio and the need for grain and other foodstuffs in the East, milling became a big business for Among the first and best examples of Ohio mills is Barretts Mills on process that the milling industry underwent during the 19th century. The mill was built in the early 1860's as a grist mill with wooden roller mill capable of grinding 24 barrels of flour a day and had a storage capacity of 4,000 bushels of grain. "Captain David M. Barrett, one of the leading citizens of the Highland County area, a state representative and for nine years superintendent of the Boys' Industrial School, was the moving force in building the plant at one time consisted not only of a sawmill and gristmill, but also included a carding mill and fulling mill.
After 1820 a woolen mill, built by Jesse Baldwin in 1805 and 1806, proved to be one of the Capt. Barrett built his house just north of and across the road from his The gristmill, which at its closing in 1957 was using Monarch mill equipment for grinding, is being restored. As a mill, it exists as a the house, to be open to the public.
