Site belonged to John Heard, a merchant, who supported patriot and federalist platforms in early American politics. Description: Built during the federal period in Ipswich, John Heard's house features several classical elements. These details include a serliana, or Palladian window, above the entrance, a central hall, and a Chippendale style staircase. The exterior is wood frame with clapboard siding. Heard's three story house has six chimneys and four wings. The front facade is five bays; the central bay is defined by an entrance portico and door with side lights and a fan light above. There is also a carriage house and stable outbuilding on the property.

History: John Heard purchased a three-fourth acre lot from John Calef in After removing the dwelling house to his Poplar Street property, Heard built the present structure around Relative Captain Augustine Heard lived in the house as well. The Heard property is owned by the Ipswich Historical Society. Currently the house is home to the Waters Memorial Museum. The museum collection contains treasures from the Orient. Recently, the carriage collection was opened to the public as a display.
