From the National Historic Landmark website: Built in this is a noteworthy example of a five-part Federal house. Elaborately carved interior mantels contrast with simpler woodwork. In addition, Gore Place is nationally significant as representative of the central role of domestic labor in American labor history. The physical structure of the house reflects changes in household labor, ideals of domesticity, working and living conditions of servants, and women's role in the family during the late and early centuries. It also stands as a nationally significant property for interpreting domestic service because of the role of African- American butler Robert Roberts in codifying rules and guidelines for domestics.
While under the employ of the Gores, Roberts published The House Servant's Directory, one of the few guidebooks written by a domestic for other domestics. 1

This project was an early survey began by the Historic American Buildings Survey during the The project was never completed. In HABS made the decision to transmit the unfinished materials from the to the Library of Congress due to the information potential of the documentation, and the fact that many of the unfinished drawings from this period document important historic properties, many of which are no longer extant. Due to the incomplete nature of the documentation and the lack of field measurements to verify the drawings, the drawings may not meet HABS standards and have been marked as such.
Most of these drawings are still in pencil, that combined with the age of the drawings, presented challenges when digitizing them, so the scanned images are not as clear as most of the drawings within the HABS collection. 1 National Historic Landmark website, accessed 22 December
