This vernacular secondary structure, built circa is one of the oldest standing buildings at the Marine Biological Laboratory Founded in MBL is the nation's first and most enduring permanent marine biological research and educational institution. This building is one of the last remaining examples of the vernacular wood-frame buildings that characterized MBL in the late nineteenth century and characterized its support buildings constructed in the early twentieth century prior to and during a phase of masonry (brick) construction.

Description: Sited behind (north of) the circa stone Candle House, between Water Street and Eel Pond, this is a vernacular one-and-three-quarter-story, wood-frame building (approximately 28 X 20 feet and 3 X 2 bays) rising from a fieldstone foundation to a gable roof. It is sheathed in weathered shingles with simple trim, painted white. The west front elevation has two garage door openings at each end with sliding vertical board doors with two fixed six-light windows. Original windows are six-over- six double hung wood sash. Two exterior staircases and doors leading to the upper level, along with two horizontal one-light windows were added about The interior of the first level is two unfinished garage spaces, with that on the north occupying both the north and central bays.

The second floor was insulated and finished about History: Little is found in the written record about this building. Historic photographs indicate that it was constructed between about when MBL purchased the Candle House, and It was most likely built about in association with the construction of the nearby Crane Laboratory (completed in It has been used as a garage and storage building and considered part of the Supply Department. In recent years, the second floor housed small land mammals.
