Selected from the Digital Public Library of America's 24 image records catalogued for this county. Every one shown here carries a public-domain status or a licence that permits reuse on a site that carries advertising; non-commercial, share-alike and restricted images are excluded. The selection is spread across the county's towns (at most eight per town), so no single institution's bulk upload crowds out the rest. Each opens the holding library's record, and the complete set at the Digital Public Library of America is one click away.

The county from the air

45 shown

Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 3,244 frames inside the rectangle that bounds this county; the 45 frames below were taken over the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest. The full set is free to browse and download at EarthExplorer under the dataset Aerial Photo Single Frames.

NWS Melbourne meteorologists determined the lightning strike occurred around 1258 LST, this was confirmed by reports from the neighbors who heard loud bang of the strike many hours before finding the deceased man on his boat.

October 2024FloodBay Lake$12,600,000Lake County Emergency Management reported significant urban, street, and low-lying flooding as a result of 6 to 10 inches (north) and 8 to 12 inches (south) of rain in association with Hurricane Milton. A period of very heavy rainfall rates associated with the core of the storm led to flash flooding during the overnight period (Oct 9 - 10).||The heavy rain that fell as a result of the storm also led to a long-term river flood event along the St. Johns. At Deland, the river rapidly rose to major flood stage on Oct 11, peaking at 5.49 ft on Oct. 14. Downstream at Astor, the river was already in minor flood stage at the beginning of the event and quickly rose to major the morning of Oct 10, peaking at 4.81 ft on Oct 12, a new record for the site.

Flooding led to the closure or washout of several roadways, including Britt Road, Wolf Branch Road, Timberlake Drive, Limit Avenue, and Donnelly Street. Sinkholes were also reported in the Eustis area on East Crooked Lake Drive and Country Club Drive. In addition, portions of State Road 46 in Mount Dora were closed for several days due to standing water. There were no reported injuries or fatalities. Renewed flooding was reported along numerous streets and communities along the river in Astor.
