June 2025Tornado (EFU)Pettit-An intense cyclic supercell thunderstorm produced a total of eight known tornadoes over portions of Cochran, Hockley, and Lubbock Counties. This was the fourth of the tornadoes. A brief cone-type tornado was observed by broadcast media approximately 1.5 miles north of Petit. No damage was observed or reported.
June 2025Flash FloodPettit-An intense and long-lived supercell thunderstorm slowly tracked to the east across portions of Hockley, Lamb, Hale, Lubbock, and Crosby Counties. In addition to producing very large hail and numerous tornadoes, it also created very heavy rainfall which led to flash flooding across a large area of the South Plains. Several reports were received from storm chasers across Hockley, Lamb, and Hale Counties of water over many roadways. Numerous reports from Lubbock County and area web cams showed water flowing over city streets as deep as three feet in some areas.
May 2024HailPettit-Numerous storm chasers reported a long lived swath of giant hail from approximately eight miles south of Pep through three miles south of Smyer. Near the beginning of this swath of hail along Farm to Market 303 near Petit, a storm chaser relayed a video of hail that measured five inches in diameter. Hail ranging in size from two to three inches in diameter substantially affected the city of Levelland causing extensive damage.
May 2022Tornado (EFU)Pettit-A cyclic tornadic supercell produced several tornadoes over a period of approximately two hours. An NWS storm survey revealed that this supercell produced nine separate tornadoes. This tornado was the eighth tornado. No damage was observed or reported with this short lived, small tornado. The instantaneous center of the tornado was estimated from TTU-Kal radar data.

An NWS storm survey revealed that this supercell produced nine separate tornadoes. This tornado was the seventh tornado. No damage was observed or reported from this short lived, small tornado. The instantaneous center of the tornado was estimated from TTU-Kal radar data.
August 2008HailPettit-Local agricultural officials reported that a severe thunderstorm produced a swath of hail that ranged from the size of pennies to quarters from just north of Pettit to south of that town. The hail stripped cotton crops and shredded maize fields along Farm to Market Road 303.
