of America's 142 image records catalogued for this county. Every
one shown here carries a public-domain status or a licence that permits
reuse on a site that carries advertising; non-commercial, share-alike
and restricted images are excluded. The selection is spread across the
county's towns (at most eight per town), so no single institution's
bulk upload crowds out the rest. Each opens the holding library's

Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey
between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is
the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers
as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 3,085 frames inside the
rectangle that bounds this county; the 40 frames below were taken over
the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four
a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest.

The most serious of them, by death, then
injury, then recorded damage. The accounts are quoted exactly as the
forecast office filed them.
Three hikers and a baby were slightly injured by a nearby lightning strike while sitting on a bench at the Mohonk Mountain House near New Paltz. The group were walking on a trail when the thunderstorm started. They then took cover and sat on a bench when lightning struck nearby. Their feet were in water, exacerbating the impact of the nearby lightning strike.
A 29 year old man repairing a water main break was struck by lightning during a thunderstorm. According to local print media, the man was standing about three inches from a metal stake garden pot when a bolt of lightning struck the plant stand behind him. The lightning strike ricocheted to his left shoulder blade and exited him through his leg. The man went to the emergency room and was discharged later that night with only minor injuries. He was able to return to work in a few days.
Heavy rainfall led to flooding of numerous creeks and streams throughout the county. The Verkeerderkill Creek exceeded bankful around 1655 EST on the 15th, flooding adjacent portions of Ulsterville Road in Walker Valley. Additional flooding was reported around 2313 LST near New Paltz, where several roads were closed due to high water, including Route 299 to Mountain Rest Road, and from Dug Road to Kleinkill Drive.|A state of emergency was declared by 0745 EST on the 16th due to the widespread flooding. Mandatory evacuations also occurred along the Esopus Creek in the town of Ulster around 1430 EST on the 16th.|
One lane of Route 214 was washed out near the Greene/Ulster County line, resulting in a road closure. A complete rebuild of the roadway was required. One lane of alternating traffic was opened on the 26th between Moggre Road in Ulster County and Saw Mill Road in Greene County.
Numerous roads were closed throughout Ulster County, some of which occurred in Marbletown, Kingston, Saugerties, Stone Ridge, Rosendale, Gardiner, Wawarsing and New Paltz. Basement flooding was also reported in Stone Ridge.
Lightning struck a home near Accord at approximately 1300 LST. Significant damage was limited to the den and study areas, with smoke damage throughout the house.
Severe thunderstorms developed behind a cold front as cold air funneled across eastern New York on the afternoon of September 10th. Thunderstorm winds downed trees in St. Johnsville and Halfmoon and large tree limbs in Waterford. In Hebron lightning struck a black locust tree, shattering the tree which broke windows in a nearby house. In Saugerties a small F1 tornado touched down tearing half the roof off a house and uprooting some trees.
A National Weather Service survey team determined that a wet microburst occurred in Ellenville. The strong wind blew down about 30 trees, damaging 2 homes and destroying a car. The estimated cost of the damage was 35 thousand dollars.
Lightning from a thunderstorm struck the Sound of Life radio network station on the evening of August 3. As a result, programming for WFGB and its 12 affliated stations had to be suspended for several days. Most of the electronics associated with the station were ruined and had to be replaced. No injuries were reported.
The Albany NWS Survey Team confirmed an EF-1 tornado touched down near Hurley Avenue. The tornado touched down near Hurley Avenue (Route 29) between Davis Street and Hillside Drive. The tornado moved southeast to just west of the NY State Thruway crossing a subdivision where it uprooted and snapped trees, displaced a car canopy and removed some shingles from a house. Many homes were damaged by fallen trees. Aerial photos showed a swath of downed trees from a second vortex which |moved along the northeast edge of the subdivision.
Several roads were washed out near Turnwood as a result of very heavy rainfall early Tuesday evening. Estimated rainfall amounts of 5 to 6 inches occurred across extreme western portions of Ulster county.
On January 8 and 9, mild weather along with significant rain and snowmelt resulted in small stream flooding across Ulster County. Small streams flooded roadways throughout the county, with the most significant flooding occurring in the New Paltz and Eddyville area.
