This French Second Empire style barn, an unusual style of architecture for Cape Cod, is at the rear of the Edward Penniman house. (HABS NO. MA-693)

Architectural Information

This tvo-story barn with a full basement of frame construction has a woodshed attached in the front. The unaltered building is yellow with white trim and a mansard roof that has had brown stripes. It is in good condition but needs minor repairs and paint, 1. Over-all dimensions: Main structure x Woodshed x 2. Foundations: Fieldstone and brick foundations with later concrete shoring. 3- Wall construction: Balloon frame construction. Sides are clapboard, painted yellow with white trim. h. Openings: a. Doors: The main barn door on the first floor Is on rollers. There is a small solid plank first floor door to the former horse stall area from the side and one to the woodshed.

An exterior door to the former cow and goat stall in the base- ment from the exterior grade is at the side and rear of the barn. The large wagon entrance is under the barn, the front of the woodshed is open and the second floor loft has a load- ing door at the front of the barn. b. Windows: The windows are double-hung four-light sash. There is a small skylight in the roof, lighting the loft. CAPTAIN EDWARD PENNIMAN BARN HABS No, MA-699 (Page 2) 5. Roof: a. Shape, covering: Mansard roof covered with painted wooden shingles on the lower level and composition on the upper pitch. The roof on the woodshed has wooden shingles. b. Cornice: The "barn has ornamental cornices and wooden gutters. c. Dormers and cupolas: There are dormers for the second floor windows and the left door.

Cupola is in the center of the roof. 6. Floor plans: a. Basement: Animal pen and open area. b. First floor: One large room for the carriage, a horse stall, storage room and privy entered from the outside. c. Second floor: One large loft area and a small shop area. 7. Stairways: One stairway from the first to the second floor. 8. Flooring: Random width pine planks h" to 8". 9. Hardware: Iron lift latches and hinges. 10. Lighting: Modern electric lamps. 11. Wall and ceiling: The interior is unfinished. Site: Building faces north and is to the rear of the Captain Edward Penniman House. There is one fence between the house and the barn and a farm type fence butting the rear of the barn.
