Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 14,662 frames inside the rectangle that bounds this county; the 48 frames below were taken over the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest. The full set is free to browse and download at EarthExplorer under the dataset Aerial Photo Single Frames.

October 2000Flash FloodWenden1 killed, $6,200,000In the early morning hours of Sunday October 22, a large low pressure area dumped four to six inches of rain over parts of eastern LaPaz and western Maricopa County. This caused flash flooding in the upper part of the Centennial Wash between the Harcuvar and Harquahala mountain ranges. The heavy runoff flowed into the town of Wenden where water ran over the highway 60 bridge. At its peak the wash was about 3/8ths of a mile wide and 12 feet deep. The resulting high water surged through the town of Wenden with at least 400 residents evacuated. There was extensive damage to the town and for many miles downstream. The reported flow was in excess of 20,000 cfs. When the flood hit Wenden, it inundated some mobile homes, causing them to lift off their foundations and float down the wash. An estimated 125 mobile homes were affected. One migrant worker was killed when flood waters swept through the town during the early morning hours. Additional heavy rainfall hit this area several days later and complicated relief efforts for many of the homeless.
August 2008Flash FloodBouse1 killed, $50,000A vehicle with 5 women was swept away as it was caught in raging flood waters along route 72, about a mile and a half southeast of Bouse. One woman died and her body was found about 7 miles away. An RV was also stranded by flood waters in the same wash at the same time.

Wind gusts were estimated at 60 mph. According to a local news report, five people were hurt with two of them sustaining serious injuries.
January 2010FloodHarcuvar$5,000,000Flood waters mainly from the Centennial Wash moved through Wenden in the early morning hours. Flood waters up to 6 feet deep took out power poles, telephone poles, trees, damaged roads and homes. The entire town of Wenden was underwater for several days. Power was restored in most areas within 2 weeks. Generally, about 3 to 5 inches of rain fell in the watershed area during the week of January 18-22.

According to the La Paz County Sheriff's Office, flash flooding caused the road to be washed away at Avenue B in Salome. Estimated time of the flooding was about 0120MST; the time of the impact was based on data from a Maricopa County Flood Control gage that crested at 3.86 feet at 0158MST. Flooding was estimated based on when the action stage was reached at which point there was potential for channel breakouts to begin along Centennial Wash.

Every populated place in the county

35

Named settlements recorded in the Geographic Names Information System, each with the topographic sheets covering it. Villages, hamlets and abandoned places alike. Each is shown with the nearest named watercourse or landform and the survey quadrangle it falls on.

The vanished settlements of La Paz County: the places named above that are no longer on the map.

Everything this county holds

The complete index, with nothing left out. Each of these is a separate record with its own page: a federal survey report, or the case file that argued a property on to the National Register. Both are public domain and reproduced word for word.

Surveyed structures

7 structures

The vanished settlements of La Paz County, the places these records name that are no longer on the map.
