Selected from the Digital Public Library of America's 10 image records catalogued for this county. Every one shown here carries a public-domain status or a licence that permits reuse on a site that carries advertising; non-commercial, share-alike and restricted images are excluded. The selection is spread across the county's towns (at most eight per town), so no single institution's bulk upload crowds out the rest. Each opens the holding library's record, and the complete set at the Digital Public Library of America is one click away.

The county from the air

48 shown

Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 5,962 frames inside the rectangle that bounds this county; the 48 frames below were taken over the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest. The full set is free to browse and download at EarthExplorer under the dataset Aerial Photo Single Frames.

July 2004Flash FloodCarlsbad1 hurt, $75,000As runoff and additional heavy rainfall continued, flash flood conditions began to spread northeast across Eddy County along the many draws, creeks, and arroyos. By 09:30 MST local officials reported that Rocky Arroyo was flooding U.S. Highway 285 with four to six feet of flowing water northwest of Carlsbad. The typically narrow low water crossing inundated over 100 yards of the federal highway. Later reports confirmed that Rocky Arroyo also was flooding major highways west of the city. At 14:10 MST, over eight feet of flowing water covered State Highway 137 west of Carlsbad. At 15:25 MST emergency officials responded to the site of a distressed driver near the upper part of Rocky Arroyo at County Road 406 ten miles west-southwest of Carlsbad. There emergency officials worked to rescue a truck driver that became stranded in rushing flood waters. An hour later, the trucker was lifted to safety by a military rescue helicopter from Fort Bliss. He was treated at a Carlsbad hospital for minor injuries.
July 2004Flash FloodQueen1 hurt, $25,000Fifteen hour rainfall totals along the Texas and New Mexico border over Guadalupe Mountains National Park (generally over the Texas portion of the mountain chain) exceeded four inches at several observing stations. Runoff along steep mountainous terrain through numerous canyons and draws combined with additional thunderstorm development over the adjacent plains of Eddy County to result in life threatening flash flood conditions. The first reports of flash flooding were received around 07:00 MST Sunday, July 25th when rural residents north of Queen said Dark Canyon Draw was flooding several secondary roadways. A motorist, an elderly man, became trapped by raging flood waters at Sitting Bull Falls northeast of Queen sometime between 07:00 and 08:00 MST. Forced to climb on top of the car to escape the rising flood waters, the gentleman remained isolated for several hours. Members of the Queen Fire Department finally reached the trapped driver shortly after 11:00 MST and moved him to the safety of higher ground. Hypothermic and suffering exposure injuries, the victim was airlifted to a medical facility for treatment.Emergency officials and storm spotters continued to report flash flooding along Dark Canyon Draw and Last Chance Canyon through the afternoon and evening. Several rural roadways remained closed for the remainder of the day as water rushed through low water crossings.
June 2000Thunderstorm WindArtesia1 hurt, $15,000Strong winds blew over a mobile home and rolled it approximately 25 feet. A man and a dog were inside the mobile home. The man was treated at a local hospital for a minor concussion and multiple bruises. A storage building (10x12 ft) was also blown over during the event.

March 2010HailCarlsbad$7,000,000Significant hail damage was observed at car dealerships located north of Church Street in Carlsbad. Although there were specific reports of roof damage, an exact number of homes impacted could not be established and this portion of the property damage was roughly estimated.
April 2004Flash FloodWhites City$2,000,000During the evening of April 3rd, a National Weather Service spotter reported Dark Canyon Road, five miles east of State Highway 137, was under seven feet of water. Additional flooding over southwestern portions of Carlsbad was reported by local law enforcement and the public. Just after midnight, early Sunday morning, U.S. Highway 285 became impassable due to flooding ten miles northwest of Carlsbad. Flooding along County Roads 658 and 672 southwest of Carlsbad resulted in several evacuations and helicopter rescues during the early morning hours on Sunday along Dark Canyon Draw. As late as Sunday afternoon, flooding of low-lying areas around Carlsbad continued along the Pecos River, as well as along Dark Canyon, Dagger, Rocky Arroyo, and Hackberry Draws. An Eddy County flood survey revealed that three different factors contributed to the record flooding in and near Carlsbad. Flood waters from Rocky Arroyo Draw fed into the Pecos River north of Avalon Reservoir. This flow along with heavy rainfall from thunderstorms resulted in a required release of water from the Avalon Reservoir. Radar estimated rainfall totals of three to four inches near and west of Avalon Reservoir between 900 PM MST on April 3rd through 100 AM MST on Sunday, April 4th. Releases from the reservoir began near 800 PM MST on April 3rd, with a measured peak rate of 14,800 cfs (cubic-feet per second) at around 400 AM MDT Sunday morning. This release of water eliminated the potential danger of a dam failure, but resulted in the washout of Callaway Drive just downstream from the release point on Avalon Reservoir. The second factor contributing to the record flooding was extremely high flow through the Dark Canyon Draw into downtown Carlsbad. Radar estimated rainfall totals of one to three inches over and southwest of Dark Canyon Draw during the evening and overnight hours of Saturday April 3rd. This rainfall led to catastrophic flash flooding along the Dark Canyon Draw from southwest portions of Carlsbad into the downtown area. A wall of water moved down Dark Canyon Draw at approximately 130 AM MST Sunday morning. The third factor that contributed to the flooding was the failure at several points of the Carlsbad Irrigation District (CID) canals. These CID channels, used primarily to irrigate area alfalfa fields, began failing due to runoff crossing perpendicular to the CID channels. This runoff was due to 8-12 inches of rainfall in the previous three days. Erosion of the channels began occurring due to the high volume of water flowing over them. As the channels finally failed, water flowed into adjacent neighborhoods. The community hardest hit by this runoff was the La Huerta neighborhood in northeastern Carlsbad. As a result of this flooding, 6 to 12 inches of water was left standing throughout most of the La Huerta area with higher amounts at isolated points.

July 2004Flash FloodCarlsbad$100,000At 20:30 MST an automated river gauge recorded an eight foot flood wave propagating down Dark Canyon Draw and approaching Carlsbad. This wave was the result of runoff and excessively heavy rains over the Guadalupe Mountains and adjacent plains during the course of the previous twenty-four hours. By 21:10 MST several low water crossings in the city were flowing with flood waters four feet deep and seventy-five to 100 yards wide. This threatened homes and property in parts of the city. The storm moved from about 200 degrees at 30 knots with all of the debris from the damage being blown in this direction. The storm first hit two trailers about 4 miles south of Otis. Tie-down straps held one trailer in place but sustained a few broken windows and a warped door. The other (unstrapped) trailer was blown over and rolled by the strong winds resulting in its destruction. The trailer rolled two times with the floor sitting upright displaced 35 yards to the north in a field. Most of the roof was torn off and was crumpled about 100 yards farther north in the field. The next area to suffer damage was 2-3 miles to the NNW of the trailers where a row of 30 foot trees along a property line were uprooted. Next, the winds hit a 3 year old house and ripped off about half of its tin roof. As the storm moved into Otis, the strong winds snapped a string of telephone poles along U.S. Highway 285.A damage survey of the area determined an affected area 4 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. Several houses within the damage area sustained no visible damage. All debris was blown from about 190-195 degrees and was only very slightly divergent.

Every populated place in the county

32

Named settlements recorded in the Geographic Names Information System, each with the topographic sheets covering it. Villages, hamlets and abandoned places alike. Each is shown with the nearest named watercourse or landform and the survey quadrangle it falls on. The 2 places that were also surveyed for fire insurance come first, with the number of atlases and photographs held for them.

The vanished settlements of Eddy County: the places named above that are no longer on the map.

Everything this county holds

The complete index, with nothing left out. Each of these is a separate record with its own page: a federal survey report, or the case file that argued a property on to the National Register. Both are public domain and reproduced word for word.
