Report Prepared by: Associated Cultural Resource Experts (ACRE) Sangre de Cristo Road, STE 202 Littleton, CO Date: April HISTORIC AMERICAN ENGINEERNG RECORD HOOVER DAM, SWITCHYARD FIREHOUSE HAER NO. NV-27-I (Page 2) The Switchyard Firehouse was an element of the control and protection system for the Hoover Dam switchyard complex. The firehouse was built in during rapid expansion of the switchyard complex and the generating capacity of the power plant in response to war demands for electricity.

Description: The Switchyard Firehouse is located to the immediate north of the relay house, to the east of the City of Los Angeles Switchyard. The single-story, reinforced-concrete structure is 22' x 32' and has a flat roof. An extruding base level, horizontal stringcourse, and vertical and horizontal paneling in doors and windows represent a subdued Moderne Style, similar to the treatment at the nearby relay house and hoist house. Interior concrete walls are unfinished. History: The firehouse was the largest element of the frre-protection system for the switchyard complex. The structure was built to house a frre hand truck and pumping equipment. The hand truck was equipped with a continuous foam generator, play pipes, nozzles, foam powder, hoses, and other equipment.

A pipe system was also installed to deliver water to each of the four main switchyards, and other frre-control equipment was installed in each switchyard. Construction of the building and installation of the pump and controls were completed in February The frrehouse may have remained in service until the switchyards were largely deactivated in the when Mead Substation assumed most switching and monitoring activities for the transmission lines from Hoover Dam.
