Mr. Brannon was married in 1857 to Saran V. Henness,daughter of Capt. Henness, an old Indian war veteran. Of their family of twelve children, five are deceased. The living are: Mrs. D. H. Woolery, Mrs. John Woodring, Mrs. W. N. Hemphill, Mrs. H. D. Groote of Auburn; William, J., Lee and Fred Brannon who are living at home on the farm.

Israel Slack was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania September 11, 1824 and was 72 years, 2 months and 21 days of age. When only a lad, his parents, Thomas and Mary ( Roney) Slack died and he was taken by his uncle, Charles Roney with whom he lived until of age. They came to Ohio in 1836 and April 6, 1848, he was married to Emily J. Urton of Loudoun County, Virginia. Mr. Slack resided near Dublin until the fall of 1849 when he moved to Jerome township and then in 1880, he purchased a farm in Paris township and made Marysville his home. Before coming here, Mr. Slack served two terms as trustee of Millcreek township and in after years was a member of the Agricultural board for six years. No children. He was a member of the M. E. church.

Edwin Sharrer died Saturday from Diphtheria, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Sharrer. Interment at Oakdale Cem, a saintly prayer over the grave by Rev. W. A. Ferguson. He was not quite six years old.

Fannie Dixon died at Columbus hospital for the insane and was brought to Union county for burial. Serves at the church at Essex. Congestion of the lungs.

On Tuesday December 1st occurred the death of Nancy Turner, relict of Samuel Turner in her 86th year. Bond cemetery. Services conducted by Elder Williams of the Raymond Christian church. p5c6 S. W. Dolbear and family has as their guest Mrs. Dolbear's sister, Mrs. S. C. Lee of Baltimore, Md, who has not been in Marysville for 22 years. Mrs Lee formerly resided in the Dolbear home which was built during the year that Case was a candidate of Governor. It was there that he spoke when in Marysville and on these grounds was held the big Freemont meeting in '56. The foundation for the residence was being put in at the time of the Chase meeting.

p5c4 Mrs. Laura Impson, county infirmary, died there from cancer on Tuesday. Her age was 40 years. A year ago she was taken to Columbus at the county expense and an amputation of one of her limbs was performed at St. Francis hospital. Since then she has not improved. She was the mother of five children, three of whom are inmates of the Children's Home. Funeral services today by Rev. McCammon, and burial in county cemetery, near Oakdale Cem

Broadway. Leander Culver and wife have been called to mourn the loss of their four year-old, buried last Sunday. Membranous croup was the cause of death.

Milford Center. Mrs. J. S. Gabriel, nee Etta Williams died Tuesday of tuberculosis. The body was conveyed to the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Williams.

p5c3 Little Myrtle, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs.Albert Carr was born November 18, 1895 and died December 19, 1896, one year, one month, one day. From birth this little one had been sorely afflicted.

p5c4 Little Sylvia, daughter of Leander and Rebecca Culver was born Aug. 27, 1892 and died Dec. 11, 1896, aged four years, three months and fourteen days.

Charles F. Mills died Monday. he was 52 years of age and leaves a wife and five children. Mr. Mills enlisted in Company | twenty fourth NVVI May 17 and was badly wounded at the Battle of Bull Run Aug. 30, 1862. he laid on that bloody field eight hours before he received any attention from his Confederate captor. On account of his wounds he was mustered out of service May 30, 1863 but reenlisted during the same hear in battery A,First Michigan Light Artillery. He was honorably discharged July 1865.

December 30, 1896 p5c2 Patrick Riley late of Union Township died at the infirmary Wednesday of congestion of the lungs. He was sixty-five. The deceased formerly worked for Asa Bates, he had no near relatives. As he was a Catholic, Father Veneman performed church ceremonies over the body and it was interred at St. John's cemetery.

p5c4 William Lee was born on a farm at Kensington, near Harford Connecticut August 2, 1810, died December 28, 1896 aged 86 years, 4 months and 27 days. He went from Kensington to Troy, NY when he was seventeen and for several years lived with Mrs. Winona Willard, his aunt who was then principal of the historic Troy Female Seminary. After several years in the office of the college, he engaged in the mercantile business and later came to Cincinnati where he was identified with the same business until 1858 when he went to New York and was engaged in the dry goods business with H. B.Clafflin & Co. In 1861, Mr. Lee came to Union County and operated a farm adjoining Marysville. He was afterward cashier of the Bank of Marysville and engaged in various other business pursuits. He has been prominently connected with the Presbyterian and Congregational churches. Mr. Lee took great pride in the fact that his ancestry is traceable back direct of Thomas Hooker and Stephen Hart. The family first came to America in 1634. He was married in Troy NY to Harriet C. VanBuskirk August 10, 1837 and to them were born six chidren, three of whom are leaving: Martin Lee, Mrs. Mary L. Pyne and Mrs. Kate King. The mother died in 1892 at the age of 73 p5c4 Lucinda Stults daughter of Frank Stults of Magnetic Springs, committed suicide she was 23. For several years she has been subject to apoplectic fits and this has induced despondency.

Edward Perry, Unionville died December 27 of cancer of the stomach, aged 69 years. The funeral was conducted by Rev. Hagens and the Odd Fellows lodge. He left a widow and six grown children. p5c4 Janie, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. B. F. Carmean died Sunday of membranous croup, a bad form of diphtheria. She was four last April.

Deacon Samuel T. Rittenhouse was born near Chillicothe, Ross county, February 16, 1817 and died January 8, 1897. He married Elizabeth Nichols in 1841 and moved to Union county in 1854. He settled on Bluescreek where he remained until 1894 when he moved to Ostrander, where he has since resided. He married Mary A. Carr in 1858. August 14, 1884, he married Adelaide Munsell. he united with the Methodist church in Ross county. In 1857, he united with Millcreek Baptist church and was one of the constituent members of Springdale Baptist church. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor, B. J. George.

pic4 Clare, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lash died Saturday at her home near Peoria. She was born July 9, 1882 and was 14 years, 6 months at the time of her death. Her parents, two sisters and four brothers are left to mourn.

p5c4 Eliza Reed and her sister and a young man by the name of Donatan were on the way toa dance when Pan Handle train No. 20 struck their surrey. Eliza was killed.

Lauson B. Harvey received word his brother Dennis M. Harvey died suddenly in Logan County. He was 28 and leaves a wife and two children. He was engaged to teach the school at North Greenfield.

01c3 Amrine. The memorial sermon of M. C. Beery, the young man who died at Cincinnati was brought here Saturday. Buried Oakdale Cem. Rev. Clayton in charge of services.

p1c3 Lunda. Mrs. Hannah Curtis, a lady who has been making her home with her daughter, Mrs. Esquire Montgomery died Thursday. Remains were taken to Quincey, Logan County for interment. p1c6 The remains of Fredrich Donnelly, one of the victims of the railroad accident were held at the Catholic church by Rev. Father Veneman. He was twenty-five.

The body of Miss Mary Reed, another of the victims and a cousin of Mr. Donnelly, was brought here Friday and placed in the vault. The two will be buried side by side. Miss Reed lived with her parents at Cable, Champaign County. She was sixteen. Miss Lizzie Reed, an older sister, who is assistant postmaster at Cable, was dangerously injured by the same accident.

The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. George Curl died Thursday of spinal trouble. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E. E. McCammons. She was five months old. Oakdale Cem.

p5c2 Mrs. Rebecca Southard died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 1897, 81. When a girl, she came with her family, the Tiltons to Licking County. She was married to Rev. Sylvester Southard and in a few years they moved to Union county. Eight chidren survive her, as follows: Hon. L. H. Southard, John Southard, superintendent of the county infirmary, Frank Southard, Mrs. Mary Stamats, Mrs. Emma Langstaff, Mrs. Calla Reams, Mrs. Anna Duffy, and Mrs. Martha Hicks. her only brother living, Neh Tilton of Zanesville was at her bedside. Her funeral was at the old McKendree chapel at York, which her husband helped to organize. She was laid beside her husband who died in 1862.

p5c5 Thomas Phillips, father-in-law of George Court died Thursday, 86 years, 10 months and 22 days. He reared a family of eight children, five of whom are living. Mr. Phillips was of Welsh origin. Among relatives present were George Court, Ed Court, and Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Wilkins.

Rev. C. L. Winget, chaplain, Ohio Penitentiary is now in his sixty-third year. He was born at Marysville, September 2, 1834 of christian parents of a lineage on the part of his father reaching far back into the old Wingate family of Windsor, England, on the part of the mother far away into the Huguentos of France. His father died 1839, his mother in 1844. He was the sixth of a family of eight chidren of whom three still remain. At the age of 16, he apprenticed himself to learn the tailoring business and for several years followed that occupation. In 1857, he married Susan G. Fairchild. To them have been born four children, two sons and two daughters. Two full columns.

p4c3 Anna E. Sager died January 19. 1897, aged 63 years 6 months 22 days. She was married to William Benson August 29, 1850. Of this union was born twelve children, ten of whom remain. Funeral services at the ME church, Unionville, conducted by the pastor, Rev. George H. Creamer. p5c1 David P. Plumb, father of the late Senator Plumb, died last week at Emporia, Kansas of pneumonia. The Plumbs were early residents of Union county and removed to Kansas in 1856. p5c2 Mrs. Helen Bradley and six daughters who have been living on the Moulton farm near Woodstock, will move to Marysville this week and occupy Lou Linzinmeire's house on Oak street. They come for the exceptional school facilities to be derived here.

Eddie Stack who resided with his sister near White Sulphur, died Tuesday of consumption. He was 78. he was for several years employed as a telegrapher on the Big Four.

p5c4 Mrs. Harriet Stewart, a former resident of Marysville died Saturday January 23 at Bellevue, Ky. Her remains wee brought to Pottersburg and then to Oakdale Cem vault.

p8c2 George McVay was born January 15, 1810 in Pennsylvania and when six weeks of age was taken by his parents to Kentucky. October 13, 1830, he was married at Marysville to Elizabeth Spencer who survives and is herself nearly 86 years. The couple came to Clinton County about 1864 and five years later to Marysville. He was a shoemaker. To Mr. and Mrs.McVay were born eight children, two of whom, Edward and Isabelle are still living. he was a member of the congregational church. He was an Odd Fellow for 64 years. The lodge will have charge of the funeral. Rev. William Haines will officiate.

pic4 Pharisburg .J. E. Carey was born Dewett county September 2, 1857, died January 27, 1897 aged 39 years, 4 months, 25 days. He moved to Missouri with his parents when a small boy. At one time he saw his father compelled to kneel to be shot by the cruel rebels, but they finally spared his life and they came to Ohio where the father soon died, leaving him an orphan at 14. He was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth L. Gandy August 12, 1881 and to them were born two children, the elder dying in infancy. He leaves a wife, also an daughter aged seven years. He was a Universalist. Funeral service conducted by Rev. Lonks, under the auspices of the IOOF. Maskill Cem.

p5c2 Miss Edith Robinson,a teacher in the Girl's Industrial home, died Saturday from typhoid fever. She had been in Portage County last week to nurse her sister through the same disease.

p3c6 The following relatives were in attendance at the funeral of George McVay. His son Edward of Lamer, Mo.; Joseph Sheridan, grandson, Stanton, O. Edward and Charles Sheridan, grandsons and Black Moore, grandson-in-law, Washington C.H.

p8c4 Jacob Barber, another pioneer, died Monday, aged 83 years, 7 months, 22 days. he had been an inmate of the county infirmary. Mr. Barber was born in Pennsylvania. In 1842, he married Mary Null of Delaware County and to them were born five children, three of whom and the widow survive him.

p4c2 William H. Thomas who moved from Urbana to this city last year to take charge of the business interests of Thomas & Co. a poultry and packing house, died Sunday. Diabetes and kidney troubles of long standing were the cause. Mr. Thomas was born in Marysville June 6, 1869. A few years

Harman Patrick was born in Union County February 12, 1840 and died January 25, 1897 (56 years, 11 months, 13 days.) He was married March 3, 1859 to Levina Severns to whom three chidren, two sons and one daughter were born. the two sons were called home when quite young. Mrs. Eva Harlow is left. Mrs. Salem Pearse received news Monday of the death of her sister-in-law Mrs Mary Abbott of Lancaster, who is known to many of our citizens. Miss Emma Pearse went to Lancaster yesterday to be present at the funeral of her aunt.

p5c4 Dr. H.S.C.Ross, a well-known physician died Thursday at his home in Unionville, aged 54 years, 9 months and 24 days. A wife and four children survive him.

Dr. Ross was born in Fairfax county,Virginia. He was a graduate of the Toronto Medical college and also of the Georgia College of Eclectic Medicine and surgery. During the war he was in the 29th Michigan Infantry, first sergeant in Co K. He was united in marriage to Miss Sue Gale at Mason, Virginia. Funeral in Unionville Methodist church, Father Veneman of Marysville officiated. Remains were taken to Pomeroy, Ohio for burial.

p5c6 Mrs. Mary Gibson, Dayton died Thursday and was brought to Marysville for burial. She was the widow of William Gibson and a long time resident of this city but has been in Dayton for several years as housekeeper for her son George Gibson. She was born in Champaign county 71 years ago. Her union with William Gibson resulted in four children: Seth, Steven, George and Mrs. William Slack. The funeral was at Mrs. Slack's in charge of Rev. E. E. McCammon.

p1c4 Pharisburg. O. Jewett died Wednesday. Funeral services were held at the residence, conducted by Rev. Hill of Broadway. Maple Dell Cemetery.

pic5 James B. Norris died Monday at the home of his son Jeremiah. He was born in Molden, Ontario, February 20, 1822 where he resided with his father until 1830 when they moved to harrison county, Ohio. He settled in Millcreek Township in 1840 where he purchased thirty acres of land. In 1864 he purchased the farm in Dover Township upon which he had lived until his death. The deceased leaves three sons. Funeral from his late home, interment Buxton Cemetery. Rev. Smucker officiated.

Wm. E. Baxter died Saturday. He was for many years a resident of Marysville. On Friday, he suffered at stroke of paralysis while conducting a auction sale of jewelry.

p5c2 Mrs. Emma Hisey, daughter of Stephen Shirk, died Thursday and funeral services were held at Union Church after which remains were placed in the vault at Oakdale Cem.

p5c3 Dr. William Reams of West Mansfield, father of Newton and Benjamin Reams, former business men of this city died Monday He was the father-in-law of John F. Marsh.

p5c4 George Orlando Shepherd, Children's Home, died of membranous croup, aged 4 years, 3 months. He was brought to the home from Plain City, p5c4 Joseph Baldwin a former resident of the county had been killed in a railway accident at Kansas City on February 8. He was about 65. He was noted for his jovial nature.

p8c2 Mrs. Lovina J. Woodburn, wife of Samuel Woodburn died Thursday at the age of 76 years, 3 months, 3 days. Mrs. Woodburn was born in Indiana county, Pennsylvania November 8, 1820 and came to Union county in '37 when her parents, John and Anna Henderson settled in Millcreek township.

anniversary of this event. To them were born ten children, six of whom, with the aged father survive the mother. Of Mrs. Woodburn's eleven brothers and sisters four are living. Mrs. Jane Liggett of Denver, Mary McCampbell of Middleton, Ind. and Dr. D. W. and William Henderson, citizens of Union county. She was undoubtedly the oldest living member of the Marysville Presbyterian church. Funeral in charge of Dr. W. A. Ferguson. Oakdale Cem p8c3 Emily Hisey, daughter of Stephen and Mary Shirk was born January 14, 1850 and died at the age of 47 years and 29 days. She was the oldest child of a family of twelve, four of which have preceded her. She was married to Benjamin Hisey, February 26, 1876. She leaves a husband, one son and two daughters She united with the Christian church in childhood.

Charles Wright died February 15 aged 60 years 9 months and 10 days. He was born in Athens County and in 1867 married Sarah Schertzer. A wife and four daughters mourn his loss. Rev. Keister officiated at funeral services.

pic5 Richwood Saturday George Temple and old soldier died of a complication of diseases. Services at the residence in which GAR post participated. At Byhalia, Comrade W. H. Haines preached the funeral sermon.

The death of Frederick Kleiber occurred Monday from pneumonia. He was 42 years of age and unmarried. Services at the settlement church by Rev. Werfleman.

p1c5 The trustees of Ostrander Presbyterian church have authorized J. M. Roney to sell their parsonage. It is one of the best properties in the village. They propose building a new parsonage on the same lot that the church stands on.

p4c3 By J. M. Roney. "In the summer of 1853 track was lain from Marysville to Delaware, then a hamlet in the woods and from Springfield to Marysville. The last spoke was driven near where the depot now stands in Marysville amidst the roar of the old six pound cannon, the blowing off of steam and shouts of the people. The writer was there".

p5c4 Mrs. Mary Catharine Slaughterbeck, a sister of John & Philip VanDerAu of this city, died Monday, aged 60 years and 26 days. She leaves a husband and three sons. Funeral at the Lutheran church by Rev. F. W. Abici. Oakdale Cem p8c3 James Russell Pyne was born at Cazenovia, NY June 1845. After coming to Marysville,he was united in marriage to Carrie Henderson, daughter of James Henderson, dec. Her death occurred several years ago in Columbus. Three sons and one daughter survive him.

The body was brought to Marysville for burial. The sons, Frank and his wife, Allen and Gale, Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Henderson and Rev. J. R. Jenkins met them at the station. Oakdale Cem .

John H. Shirk was born in York Township May 15, 1840, being the son of Aaron & Rosemond Shirk. He was one of five children. For many years he was engaged in the milling business at York and Mt. Victory. Mr. Shirk was a soldier in the 136th and 191st regiments and a member of Ransom Reed Post. He was twice married, the last time to Emma Garner. Two children by the first wife survive, Mrs. J. W. Greiner and H. A. Shirk, both of Marysville. The deceased's age was 56 years 5 months and 18 days. York Cemetery. Services at McKendree church, Rev. Wm. M. Haines, officiating. John Braun, Jr. died Sunday aged 27 years 1 month 26 days. He was born in Columbus January 2, 1870 and his parents moved to Marysville when he was three. In the spring of 1892, he was united in marriage to Miss Lizzie VanDerAu, eldest daughter of Philip VanDerAu. To them were born two daughters.

p4c3 Mrs. Sarah Jane Steinmetz, relict of Cornelius Steinmetz who died October 1894, died Saturday at the home of her son-in-law Samuel Stump aged 66 years 6 months and 4 days. The deceased, whose maiden name was Crottinger, was born in Knox County and before coming to Marysville in 1868, lived for a time in Licking County. Her union to Mr. Steinmetz was in April 1850 and it was blessed with three children.. They are: Mrs. Mary E. Weller and Mrs. Sarah L. Stump of this city and George H. Steinmetz, lately removed to Grand Rapids,Ohio. Funeral at Stump home in charge of Rev. F. W. Abicht of Trinity church. Internment Oakdale Cem.

News of the death of Mrs. T. H. Brannan of Canal Dover was received by Joseph Roff Thursday The deceased was the wife of Dr. Brannan and a sister of David F. McKitrick. Four daughters mourn her departure. p5c2 Richard Turner received a telegram that his brother's wife Mrs. Jacob L. Turner died. Buried Kenton. b5c3 The youngest daughter of John Braun died Sunday of meningitis, just a week after her father. It was 17 months. Oakdale Cem . Funeral by Rev. F. W. Abicht. p5c4 Mrs. Maria Court, wife of Joseph Court of Marion and mother of Geo. W. Court of this city died Thursday. She was 82 years 5 months and 3 days. She was married to Joseph Court in 1834. Of their ten children, nine are living.

Mrs. Sadie Wells and Laura Andrews of Liberty township met their death Saturday, being struck by Ohio Central passenger train No w. The accident occurred at the Peoria road crossing, between the Catholic and Oakdale Cemeteries. They were killed outright and the horse lived but a few minutes. (2 column explanation of accident.) p8c3 Margaret Harlan Evans was born in Chester county, Pennsylvania March 3, 1811, and died February 25, 1897 aged 85 years, 11 months and 25 days. She was married to Joseph Evans May 17, 1832. They moved in 1837 to Champaign county Ohio and in 1851 to the home farm in Union county. Her husband died sixteen years ago.. She was the mother of eight children, three of whom preceded her in death.

March 31, 1897 Vol 48 No 36 Amrine Guy, the infant child of Mrs. and Mrs. Curtis Amrine died Friday from pneumonia. Funeral Sunday by Rev. Smucker. also p 5 c2 p5c5 A. J. Hobert 67, died at his home in Jerome township March 12. Mr. Hobert was born near Plain City, Madison County in 1829 and when a small boy moved to Jerome. He married Jane A. p6c3 Died March 20, Esther, widow of Dr. John Vail aged 80 years 9 months and 2 days. Esther, daughter of Thomas and Orpah Carr was born June 17, 1816 near Smithfield, Jefferson County O February 27, 1833. She was united in marriage to Dr. John Vail, also of Jefferson County. To this union were born twelve children, three of whom are still living.

April 7, 1897 No 37 Vol 48. p1c3 Plain City Jacob Mooney died of cancer in his eightieth ear. The funeral was on Friday and that of Miss Lula Jones, age 19 years, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Jones was Sunday.

p1c2 Lorenzo Cheney, Jackson Township, hung himself. He was in his 66th year. He served one term as commissioner of the county to which he was reelected in 1872 and served numerous terms as treasurer of his township His sister is Mrs. W. A. Garrard of Marysville. Funeral from the home preached by Rev. W. N. Roberts, assisted by M. D. Scott.

p8c2 News reached this place Tuesday of the accidental death of Otto Rentszeh, son of O. Rentszeh who was four years ago in the mercantile business in this place.. The son had accepted a position as brakeman on the Pan Handle railroad. He was running on a local freight between Richmond, Ind. and Hamilton,O. He was caught between two cars and killed. He will be well remembered by many of our citizens.

p4c3 On Thursday, Mrs. V. A. B. Vaden, the aged sister of Dr. T. P. Shields, at whose home in Millcreek Township she had been living for a number of years, died on her 73rd birthday. The funeral was at Dr. Shield's home in charge of Rev. Rogers. Mrs. Vaden was born April 8, 1824 at Cumberland, Virginia. She had one son, a civil engineer, who died a couple months ago at Gautemala, South America. He was one of twins, the older dying in infancy.

Virginia A. B. Shields was married in 1859 to Colonel William D. Vaden, a hero of the Mexican War. They lived at Memphis until forced by the viciselenctes of the civil war to seek refuge at Mrs. Vaden's old home in Virginia. There the husband died in 1863 and his widow remained with the Shields family until 1872 when she went again to Memphis but soon came to Ohio whither the Doctor had moved.

April 21, 1897. Mrs. Emeline M. Haines died suddenly Saturday... She was born October 3, 1845 at Richwood and her marriage to Allen Haines occurred on April 4. 1868. Besides her husband, she leaves two sons J. Avery Haines of Richwood and Lowell R. of his city funeral Monday by Rev. E. E. McCammon. Oakdale Cem. Among those attending were her brother of Cleveland and the latter's son T. W. Barkdull. rector of an Episcopal church in Cleveland.

p5c3 Mrs. Mary A. Westlake who made her home with her brother, Samuel Westlake died Wednesday She was 69. Funeral at Amrine church in charge of Rev. Clayton Smucker and Ref. McCammon. Interment at Amrine cem.

L. H. Headington died April 11, 1897 aged 61 years. He leaves a mother, wife and five sons and three daughters. Funeral was at ME church conducted by the Disciple minister of West Mansfield. p4c3 Samuel A. Cherry was born December 16, 1811 in Oneida County, New York. He died Tuesday. He came to Marysville with his wife in May 1839 and opened a tailor shop. In 1865 he became interested in the milling business. His first saw mill was on the site of the Thompson mill of East Fourth Street. (In 1874, in company with Smith Alexander he established a new mill on Main Street where he became sole proprietor. Mr. Cherry's first wife died in 1885 and in 1887, he was married again to Madeline Anderson. There were no children by either marriage but during mid-life Mr. Cherry adopted a son John Cherry who is married and resides in Marysville. He was one of the pillars of the Congregational church. Funeral was in charge of his pastor W. S. Bugbey. His only brothers, Dr. Morgan Cherry of Delaware and Henry Cherry of Newark are expected to be present. p4c3 Captain Patrick H. Wilson was born in Kings County, Ireland 60 years ago He was married in America and three sons and a wife survive him. He was the pension agent of this city. He had been a resident a little over two years. He enlisted at Woodstock September 2, 1860 in the 17th regiment. At Fort Donaldson he received an injury. In hauling ammunition, he fell from his horse which then stepped upon his breast.

p4c3 Milton M. Shipley died Sunday in York township. The deceased was born in Pennsylvania in 1822. Fourteen years later he moved with his father to Ohio and in 1865 settled in Union County on his present farm.

p5c5 Frederick Marlin the 16 year old son of Wash Marlin who was once a well-known resident of Marysville was killed Thursday by a passenger train at his home in Manayemk, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.

He was 47 years of age and considered one of the most prominent citizens of Cincinnati. He was one of the principal stockholders of the Edgewood Distillery Co. pc6 Died April 27 in Indianapolis, Indiana Mr. Francis W. Lee, son of Rowland Lee. He was born and raised in Marysville. He learned the trade of spinning in the woolen factory of Rawson Welch. He went from here to northern Indiana, from there to Champaign, Illinois, but has resided in Indianapolis some twenty odd years, having been connected with the Singer Sewing Machine Co as general agent and manager most of the time. Mr. Lee was here three years ago and in his connection with his sister, Mrs. G. W. Gore of Champaign, Ill. had his deceased mother, brothers and sisters removed form the old yard to Oak Grove cemetery. p4c2 A double funeral was held over the bodies of Mrs. Joseph Shunk Shank and Jonathan Hammond who were brother and sister. Mrs. Shank was 46 years of age and leaves a husband and three children. Jonathan Hammond wa 64 years old and leaves six orphaned children, the mother having died several years ago. Orrin Hammond, the father of the above is still living in his 90th year. Funeral services were at the Christian Church in Milford Center, in charge of Rev. Hagens, and interment was in Milford cemetery. p5c2 Another very sudden death occurred last Friday morning in Dover township. Hamer Sherman, one of the influential citizens of eastern Union county, who lived at Tanner's Crossing, a short distance from the home of W. H. Loveless died after an illness of only a few hours. Thursday afternoon he was engaged in lifting a box of potatoes out of the cellar when he suffered a severe pain in his side. This caused his death at 5 o'clock the next morning. The deceased left a wife and three children. He was one of the substantial farmers of the community and an honorable member of the Knights of Pythias. Mr. Robinson was born in Champaign County, August 17, 1837 and was married August 16, 1855, going soon after to St. Paris, where she resided for thirty years. Eight years ago, Mr. and Mrs. Robinson moved to Marysville. She was a Methodist for forty years and was a prominent worker in the WCTU. The husband and one daughter Mrs. A. B. Swisher survive her. p4 William D. Boring was born in Dover Township April 14, 1876 and died at Marysville May 21, 1897, aged 21 years, 1 month and 7 days. When he was fourteen his father died In the fall of 1893, he moved with his mother and sister Gertrude to Marysville. He was a Methodist. The mother and five sisters are left. Funeral by Rev. E. E. Mrs. Sophia Beach, mother of Mrs. J. B. Whelpley was born May 11, 1813 in Vermont and moved with her parents to Granville, Ohio when she was seven years of age. The next year the family moved to Madison county where Sophia was married to Marova Beach. Her husband died 42 years ago. Of their eleven children only two are living. Mmarshal P. p8c4 Sarah Parthemore died at Delaware April 14, 1897, aged 21 years, 4 months, 8 days. She was born at Milford Center December 6, 1876, her parents being Erastus and Addie Parthemore. She united with the Friends in Morrow county ad became a member of William St. M.E. church in Delaware.

The youngest child, a little daughter she gave to her sister, Mrs. Delia Daugherty.

David Danforth who was well known about Raymond and Broadway 15 or 20 years ago. The family moved to Champaign, Illinois where Mr. Danforth became quite well-to-do and lived a retired life until his death about a year ago. Mrs. Danforth died May 31 aged about 55 years. She leaves three children.

p4c4 As a result of an explosion at the Kleiber farm, George Noelp who recently purchased the place was instantly killed. He is the son of Mrs. Maggie Noelp. He was 32 years of age on the day of the accident. The funeral was in charge of Rev. F. W. Abicht. He leaves a widow and two children. p5c2 Mrs. Cassie Liggett received a letter from her brother G. W. Swank of Bazine, Kansas, informing her of his wife's death, June 30 after several weeks suffering from Bright's disease. Mrs. Swank was a sister of Ex-commissioner John K. Dodge.

The deceased was a grandchild of Casper Ruhl. p5c4 Rev Thomas Reynolds, who was united in marriage three weeks ago to Miss May Andrews of Irwin, the adopted daughter of Foster Bennett. The death was caused by Bright's disease. His remained were prepared by Undertaker Morey and were sent to his former home in Virginia. He was 28 years of age.

Cherry, the widow of George W. Cherry died Friday at the home of her son Jeff L. Cherry. Her age was 73 year and 9 months. She was the daughter of Cyprian Lee an old time resident who came from Delaware county when the daughter was quite young. At the age of 19, she was married to George W. Cherry, then a shoemaker. Mr. Cherry served as postmaster of Marysville during the administration of Van Buren and later engaged in the railroad business, constructing four miles of the road between Marysville and Delaware. He was the first conductor on that line now known as the big Four. Later the family went of Baltimore, Maryland where Mr. Cherry was engaged in manufacturing. In 1886, Mr. and Mrs. Cherry came back to Marysville to live a retired life and the husband's death occurred in 1891. She was originally a member of the Adventist church (Church of god). During her early life and before her marriage, she taught in the Marysville school. p4c4 Mrs. Mary A. Brannan died Monday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Joseph Roff. Funeral was held at Roff home conducted by Prof. W. H. Cole. Mary A. Elliott was born June 19, 1823 at Baltimore. Her marriage to John Brannan took place in Muskingum County Jan. 22, 1845. They soon came to Union county and settled on the farm in Leesburg township now owned by Col Curry. The death of Mr. Brannan occurred there during the Civil war while he was home on furlough. There are six children. Dr. T. H. Brannan and Mrs. Emma Rockwell of Canal Dover; Guy A. Brannan, Troy; John C. Brannan, Athens; Mrs. J. H. Trickey, Magnetic Springs and Mrs. Sarah Roff Marysville,all of whom are living. There are also two brothers and one sister, John and Joseph Elliott, of McArthur, and Mrs. Margaret Tetlow of Zanesville. The deceased was 74years and 23 days of age, a member of the Methodist church. p5c3 Martin Lee died Thursday in Leesburg Township aged 60 years and 10 months. Patch was born Sept. 25, 1877 and died in Marysville July 25, 1897 aged 19 years and ten months Feb. 22, 1897 he was united in marriage to Miss Gertrude Melching, who with father, mother, four brothers, an aged grandmother are left to mourn. Funeral services were held at the residence of his father Harmon Patch conducted by Rev. Haines. assisted by Prof. Cole. Oakdale p4c4 Word was received Monday by Judge McCampbell of the death Sunday of his uncle Charles McCampbell in Middletown, Indiana. He resided in Marysville for many years and was one time considered wealthy, though financial difficulties overtook him later. He was married to a sister of D. W. Henderson and the wife survives him, together with three children, John, Alice and William, the latter bring the well-known newspaperman who received his training in this city and afterwards operated the Milford Center Ohioan. He is now in Middletown.

p5c1 Death again visited the county infirmary Saturday and claimed William Patterson, the old soldier who was recently found wandering about in Jerome township. The body was shipped to relatives in Chillicothe.

The infant son of Mrs. and Mrs. Leon Woods Darby township died very suddenly Sunday after a short illness with brain trouble. It's age was ten weeks. the funeral was held with Rev. C.M. p8 Obituary. Elizabeth Lee was born near Winchester, Virginia on the 27th day of March 1818 and died in Toledo, O. August 2d 1897 aged 79 years 4 months and 5 days When about 18 years old she removed from Virginia to Ohio and settled in Union county where she resided except the lat three years of her life she has been living with her daughter Mrs. Vanderhoof. In 1840, she was married to Samuel Elliott. to them were born ten children, seven sons and three daughters, seven are still living. They are Phillip and Jacob Elliott and Mrs. Ann Gibson and Mrs. Jane Kezertee all of Marysville, Mrs. Lida Vanderhoff and Addison and Wm. Elliott of Toledo. On June 24, 1894, Mrs. Elliott was bereft of her husband.

p8c4 Rev. W. S. Bugbey received word of the death of his younger brother Edward L. Bugbey of Inverness, Florida. The body was shipped to Baltimore, Md. He and Rev. Bugbey's son Homer engaged in driving wells.

p1c4 Richwood. Sylva Trapp aged 8, daughter of Marshal Trapp died Saturday. She and a companion were playing with torches made of cattails saturated with coal oil. Her dress caught fire. p5 William Tossey's famous head of polled Durham cattle were loaded and shipped to Carthage where the Hamilton county fair is in progress this week.

p1c2 Milford Center. Mrs. T. T. Reynolds nee May Andrews returned Saturday from Cameron,West Virginia, the home of the parents of Rev. Reynolds and to which city she accompanied the remains of her deceased husband for interment July 8. Mrs. Reynolds has accepted the position of principal in Alexandria College, Alexandria Kentucky and will leave for her post of duty this week.

p1c5 Jacob Tonge aged 88, over forty years a resident of Richwood and vicinity was buried in Claibourne Cem. Funeral services from the Church of Christ, Rev. Childs, pastor, officiating.

p4c3 Joseph Cooper, picture. Uncle Joe was born March 6, 1816 at Lexington, Va. That was also the birthplace of Samuel McCampbell who afterward became associated the shoe trade in Marysville and died at the age of 78. Mr. Cooper is of French, Indian and Negro extraction. He father was a Frenchman and a soldier in the war of 1812. He became the leading shoemaker of Lexington.

There was no such thing as slavery in his family. when the son was a little more than five years old he whittled out a toy shoe last that so impressed the father that he put little Joe on the bench the following year. he has therefore followed that calling for over 75 ears. He worked for important personages, such men as Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren and Zachariah Taylor. He also made footwear for Robert E. Lee. After 40 years, he started to Ohio with four of his brothers and five sisters. They crossed the Ohio river at Point pleasant on the day of President Pierce's election. Two months were spent in Chillicothe and then Uncle Joe went to Washington C. H. where he served as foreman in a shoe shop. In the spring of '56, Judge Briggs, desiring to clear off a portion of his land near Pottersburg, secured the services of Uncle Joe at $40 per month. When Briggs broke up, Uncle Joe went to Newton and opened a shoe shop which he operated for several years, his first wife dying at that place. He came to Marysville 22 years ago. In 1888, the second Mrs. Cooper died. Of Uncle Joe's children, 6 girls and 1 boy are living, the latter being Frank Cooper of Washington D. C. who holds a responsible position in the US pension department. The daughters reside respectively at Kenton, Marysville, North Lewisburg, Granville and 2 at Irwin, all married but one.

p4c4 William Cratty was born in Butler county, Pa. June 28, 1805 and came to Delawae county, O. in 1814. In 1849 he went to California. Upon his return he settled at Elmwood Ills. which was his home for may years. He became identified with the "underground railway". In 1826 he was married to Candis Bennett and of their family of twelve, five daughters and two sons survive The latter are prominent attorneys of Chicago. In 1879, after the death of his first wife, he was married to Sarah J. Smith who still lives. The funeral was held at his late home on Third street after which the body was taken to Elmwood, Ills. for burial. Mrs. Cratty will continue to make her home in Marysville.

p4c4 Lewis Eiller,Jr. died Sunday in New Dover. He was born June 24, 1844 and was married to Mary Kelsey February 26, 1871. To them were born 7 children, 5 of whom died young. He enlisted in the 13th regiment OVI. He was a prisoner of war for some time, being confined in Libbey prison. After his exchange he served until discharge Nov. 1, 1864. Funeral at ME church, New Dover. Rev. Clayton Smucker officiating. Interment at Mt. Hermon.

p4c4 Mrs. William Howard of Irwin died Sunday. She was a sister of Mrs. James Fullington and C. A. McMullen of Woodstock. She leaves beside the husband, three sons and one daughter. Funeral at the Howard home, burial at Milford Center.

p5cé6 William Edgar, youngest child and only son of Mrs. and Mrs. Arthur E. Winget died of cholera infantum, aged 1 year 6 months and 28 days October 6, 1896, the home of these bereaved parents was again visited by the death angel and Ethel, a sweet little girl of four summers was taken from them.

p4c4 Mrs. Kate Scheiderer Burns, wife of George Burns died of tumor of the stomach. She would have been 44 in November. She was a daughter of George Scheiderer, deceased. Her children consist of five boys and one daughter. Funeral was at the settlement church.

p2c3 Mrs. Millie C. Kennedy, wife of Joseph M. Kennedy died Wednesday. She was in her 66th years. Dropsy. Mr. and Mrs. Kennedy were married, each for the second time twelve years ago. From her first union there is one son Adolphus Ruggles who is an actor and his exact whereabouts are unknown. He is her only child. Funeral services in charge of Mrs. M. E. Clemens of Columbus, a noted spiritualist medium. Oakdale Cem. Mrs. Kennedy, like her husband, was a hearty follower of the spiritualist belief and entertained many of the prominent mediums of that faith at her home where seances were regularly held.

p2c4 Miss Alma McCampbell died. She was 42 years, 10 months and 16 days She was born in Jerome Township, being the eldest daughter of Alfred McCampbell deceased. Buried New California.

p5c3 Mrs. Margaret Cody, Dover Tp died Saturday at the home of her son Michael Cody, aged 87 years, 7 months and 4 days. She was born in Tipperary County and came to Marysville in 1852. Her husband, John Cody, died in 1890. Six sons and two daughters survive her. The funeral services were held in the Catholic church and burial in St. John's Cem.

p1c2 Broadway. Warren Lathrop who lived in Marysville over sixty years ago, and has lived in Mohaska county, lowa, for some fifty years, passed away September 20. He was almost 84.

Watkins p1c5 The rededication of the M. E. church took place here Sunday. Remodeling of the church cost about one thousand dollars. The sermon in the morning was preached by D. H. D. Cherrington. An Epworth League rally occupied the afternoon and in the evening a large congregation was addressed by Rev. Stewart of Hillards.

p4c1 Thomas W. Croy died October 1, 1897 at New Dover, aged 61 years 11 months and 16 daus. He married Miss Elsie Columber by whom there were seven children, six of whom are living. One child died between two and three years of age. Mrs. Croy died son ten years ago. Funeral services at New Dover, conducted by Rev. E. E. McCammon.

p8c2 Mrs. John Newlove received word yesterday of the death of her uncle, George McElfresh at the home of his daughter at Muskegan, Michigan, October 31 at the age of 72 years. The deceased was born in Pickaway county and moved to Union county at the age of-- years. He lived here until the civil war broke out. Since the war he has resided in Indiana and Michigan.

The death of James Carter, Peoria, occurred Saturday. Typhoid fever. He leaves a widow and two sons, Claude and George, the former a graduate of Marysville Schools and at present a student at Ohio Wesleyan University. He was a prominent factor in the Populist party, He was a step-son of Rev. Pilcher who died here some years ago. Funeral by Rev. E. E. McCammon. Interment Oakdale Cem.

p9c2 William McCarthy, one of the aged residents of this city died Tuesday at the home of his son-inlaw L. G. English. He was 78. Walter W. Carr of Glen Mary, Tenn. was here last week accompanied by his charming wife. Mr. Carr is a native of this community and is employed as agent and operator on one of the leading railroads of T. N. at a salary of $1259.

S. S. Dykes, railroad agent has since Nov. 1, 1896 to Nov. 1, 1897 forwarded from the station 138 cars of stock, 126 cars of hay, 66 cars of grain.

He was born in Peachum, Caledonia county, NY p5c4 Martin Burris who left this place five years ago and was admitted to the Sandusky Sailors Home died there Wednesday in the 63rd year. He was buried in the home burial grounds.

Hon, James C. Howe of Kenton died at his home Monday, aged 43 from typhoid fever. He served as adjutant general of Ohio under Governor McKinley. Afterwards he assumed the editorship of the Kenton Republican. After the election of McKinley he received a government appointment in the Department of Justice, which position he held until his death.

p5c4 James Woodburn died Tuesday aged 73 years 8 months and 20 days. James Woodburn was one of the oldest citizens of Union county, coming from Greene county when only 20 years of age. Arnold was born in Jerome township August 19, 1864 being the fourth of a family of five, three boys and two girls, children of G. W. and S. C. Arnold. When quite small he moved with his parents to Taylor township where he lived until death, October 24, 1897, being 33 years 2 months and 5 days old. Pharisburg. Arad Franklin, Leesburg township died Friday, aged almost 95 years. Funeral services at the Hopewell church conducted by Rev. Hagans and under the auspices of Richwood lodge F.A.M. pic6 Obit. James W. Woodburn was born in Green county, Ohio February 12, 1824 and died November 2, 1897, aged 73 years 8 months and 20 days. He moved with his parents to New California in 1841. July 15, 1847, he married Sarah Jane Robinson. Mrs.Woodburn died last July 20. In 1866 Mr. Woodburn joined the United Presbyterian church in New California, transferring his membership to Presbyterian church when he moved here. One son is living in Texas, another in South Dakota, one daughter, Mrs. Carrie Fleck. living at Arnold and Mrs. Jane E. Crottinger. Another daughter, Mrs. Sarah E. Farnum preceded her parents to the grave about three years ago. Mrs. Catherine Stoll, Allen Township died Wednesday. She was 63 years 8 months 27 days of age. Mrs. Stoll was born in the grand dukedom of Baden, Germany and came to the United Stated in 1850, locating in Franklin County. In 1853 she was married to George Stoll and two years later they removed to Union county. All of their eight children survive the mother. The deceased's mother, Catherine Lusch also survives her. September 26, 1895 and moved with the family to Broadway in the fall of 1897 where he died October 25, 1897, being 2 years and 29 days old, leaving father, mother, sisters. p4 Captain A. H. Goodwin, County recorder died Saturday. Captain A. H. Goodwin was born in Little York, Jefferson county Feb. 28, 1844 and died Nov. 18, 1897, aged 53 years 8 months and 18 days. His father and mother were George and Elizabeth Goodwin, the father and three brothers and six sisters are still living. At the age of 17, with his father and three brothers he enlisted in the 30th

Onio regiment Co B. in April 1861. He served his time and reenlisted in the same regiment April 1864. On the 29th of the following June, at the battle of Kenesaw Mountain, he was severely wounded on June 29 by a shell exploding, taking off the left foot, and a large piece of the shell embeding itself in the thigh. Later he was appointed as guard at the Ohio state penitentiary and later was made superintendent of the State department in the same institution. He remained here under different administrations fourteen years. He was married November 6, 1875 to Mrs. Elizabeth P. Gregg who with two sons, Walter and Raymond today mourn the loss. In 1884, Mr. Goodwin moved to Milford Center where he engaged in the real estate business, also serving as justice of the peace and township clerk, and was thrice elected mayor of Milford Center. He was elected recorder of Union County November 1893 and again re-elected in November of 1896.

p5c3 Rolla G. Perry, prosecuting attorney of Marion county and an enthusiastic guardsman died Sunday. He was only 25 years old but was generally known throughout central Ohio. His appointment as Sergeant Major of the Third Battallion, 14th Regiment was made by Major Sellers of this city.

p5c3 Mrs. Flora Davis, daughter of Orsamus Poling died Friday at the home of her father, aged 22 years 1 month and 17 days. Funeral services at Allen Center Baptist church, conducted by Rev. J. W. Hemley, the Universalist pastor of Fountain Park. The deceased leaves a son. Oakdale Cem. p5c6 Michael O'Brien, a veteran of the Civil war died Saturday. Mr. O'Brien was a native of Dublin, lreland, born Christmas 1831. For 43 years he had been a resident of the United States. He enlisted September 1864 in Company | o f the 19th Ohio Infantry and was wounded at Resaca,Georgia. He leaves a wife and six children. Funeral services by Rev. Father Veneman of the Catholic church. Interment at Milford Center.

p4 Christopher N. Denman died at his home on E. Sixth Monday at the age of 74 years 1 month and 2 days. Mr. Denman was born in Hanover, Licking county, October 20, 1823. On October 23, 1844, he was united in marriage to Miss Mary A. Southard., who, with five sons and two daughters survive him. He was later in life elected marshal of Hanover and afterward honored with the office of Justice of the Peace. He enlisted in Co D. 76th OVI. He took part in battle of Fort Donellson but not having recovered from a previous illness, he was given an honorable discharge. Mr. Denman moved his family to Union county in 1869. Funeral services at the home by Rev. E. E. McCammon assisted by the GAR.

p5c4 William N. Ayers "Dick" died Sabbath. W. N. Ayers was born in Marysville, May 16, 1872. he graduated from high school in 1892. He spent his live here with the exception of a short time in Chicago and later his term in the Cincinnati Law school. Since being admitted to the bar, he had been associated with his father, Hon. D. W. Ayers and took part in many of the importatn cases in which the latter was employed. He was appointed a special bailiff of the common pleas court and custodian of the law library. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church. Funeral at the Presbyterian Church in charge of Rev. W. S. Bugbey, assisted by Rev. E. E. McCammon.

p4c4 Nancy J. Smith, widow of the late William Smith died suddenly Thanksgiving day at the home of her daughter Mrs. Thomas Martin. Nancy J. Allen was born near South Charleston May 23, 1823 making her age 74 years 6 months and 2 days. Her father was a soldier of the War of 1812. Sewas married to William Smith in 1840, he died May 11, 1895. They moved to Union county in 1851, settling near Peoria and in 1870 came to Marysville. To them were born 8 children, two of whom, a son and a daughter had been summoned before them. In 1862 Mrs. Smith joined the Union Christian church. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. S. Bugbey. She was one of five children of Benjamine and Jane Tinkham, only one of whom survives her. She was married January 22, 1862 to James C. McCloud who is left to mourn his loss...Mrs. McCloud was for many years an active member of the M.E. church. Funeral services in the M.E. church at Unionville Center conducted by the pastor Rev. Laughlin.

p6c4 Obadiah Nichols was born near Orange New Jersey September 16, 1817 and died at his home in Marysville November 4, 1897 aged 87 years 1 month and 19 days. He was the eldest son of a family of eight children born to Isaiah and Sarah Nichols. About 1820, the family removed to Licking county and located about three miles northeast of Pataskala. November 15, 1832, Obadiah Nichols was married to Lovicy Thomas, daughter of David Thomas, one of the first settlers of Granville township. They built their home in the forest about a mile north of his father's place.. Here they lived forty years and here were born to them three sons and four daughters: Charles, David, Alfred, Mary (Mrs. W. T. Williams), Martha (Mrs. I. W. Price); Anna (Mrs. Dr. David Williams) and Sarah E., of whom David, Alfred and Anna have passed before him. In 1872, they moved to Marysville. After a brief stay, they returned to Licking ocunty and settled in Pataskala where on September 24, 1884, Mrs. Nichols was called to her reward. September 6, 1876, Mr. Nichols was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Crooks. widow of Rev. Adam Crooks of Syracuse, New York who survives him. There remain of his immediate family his wife, a sister, Mrs. Herrick, a brother George W. Nichols,Esq. who resides near Pataskala; one son and three daughters, eleven grandchildren and four great grandchilern.

She was born and raised in Union county where she was married some 50 years ago to Thompson Baldwin and moved with him to Mahaska county, lowa where Thompson died January 15, 1880 and Mrs. Thompson(Baldwin?) then married Mr. Bare, formerly, we think, of Marysville.

p1c4 Rebecca Ann Evans, wife of Jacob Evans died Wednesday of Brights disease. The funeral was in charge of Rev. C. J. Hagans with interment at Amrine. The deceased was born May 27, 1829 near Middleburg. She was one of seven children, only one of whom survives her. She married Mr. Evans January 24, 1850. To them were born six children and seventeen grand children.

p5c4 The death of William Orahood, son of Mrs. Scioto Marriott occurred Monday in a railroad accident at Holly Springs, Mississippi. The deceased was recognized as one of the best printers that ever left his city, but he could never overcome a disposition to roam about the country. He was buried at Holly Springs, his brother of St. Louis being in attendance.

years 7 months and 20 days old. Mr. Peacock was born October 19, 1820 at Bainbridge, Ross county, Ohio and came to this city 57 years ago. For years he labored as a blacksmith and held the office of marshal. His first marriage was to Mary Westlake by whom he had seven children of which number the following survive: Lewis and Wharton, both printers and employed respectively by the United Brethren Publishing Co. of Dayton and the Star Publishing Co. of Marion. William who lives on a farm near Marysville; Mrs. Samuel Ainsworth and Mrs. D. H. Fry both of this city. The mother died in 1871. Mr. Peacock married a second time, but a separation took place several years ago. The Masonic fraternity took charge of the funeral in conjunction with Rev. E. E. McCammon of the M. E. Church. Services and interment at Amrine.

MORSE, pici Magnetic Springs. An effort is being made to appoint a guardian for Morgan Savage. Mr. Savage was one of the wealthiest farmers in Union County but has given much of his property to the Baptist church.

p5c4 The remains of Mrs. John McManus of Harrison county, who died Wednesday at the home of James Peever, Lewisburg road were taken to Harrisonville for interment. She was 62 years of age. Rev. E. E. McCammon conducted a short service at the Peever home before departure.

p5c5 Mrs. Lincoln Laird was called Monday to Delphi, Indiana by the very sudden death of her father William Popejoy. Mr. and Mrs. Laird are preparing to move to Delphi during the month of January. p5c4 Obit. Sophia Buckley was born in Failsworth Lancashire, England July 18, 1851 and died December 4, 1897 at Raymond...her father was a local preacher of the M. E. church. October 26, 1876, she was married to Joseph Collinson and to them were born seven children, only two of whom with the father survive her The family came to America in 1882 and settled first at Lowell, Mass. coming to Union county in 1885.

The deceased was 22 years of age and leaves a husband and infant, a father and mother, three sisters and one brother. She was the daughter of M. Braithwaite. Mrs. Reed was born May 31, 1820. She was one of a family of seven children, only one of whom, Captain Philo Burnham survives. The deceased was married January 22, 1837 to Robert D. Reed who died om 1866. To them were born seven children, one of whom died in infancy and another, the namesake of this father died at Atlanta Georgia in 1864. Of their offspring there are living five daughters,twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Funeral was conducted by Rev.C. J. Hagans. Milford Center Cem.

Hamilton died New Year's Day. He was a brother of Ex-senator George Hamilton and Captain H. C. Hamilton of Richwood and Dr. |. N. Hamilton and Cornelius Hamilton. Dr. Hamilton was 74 years old.

She was 72 and widow of the late Charles Thomson Hull who was a departemnt clerk at Washington. She was a daughter of Rev. James Hervey, a pioneer of Presbyterianism.

p5c5 Mrs. Dezire C. E. Courter, wife of H. M. Courter died the 28th at the home of her daughter Mrs. L. W. Miller of Liberty township. Deceased was 82 years 7 months and 24 days of age. Of her 10 children, 6 are living, 4 of whom served as soldiers in the late war. Besides the husband, now in his 84th year there are 35 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren who survive her.

Mrs. Courter was born in Essex County, New Jersey. After her marriage they moved to Ohio, locating at Berkshire, Delaware county. Since then, they have lived in Illinois and Michigan. Funeral service at the home by Rev. Hill of West Mansfield, pastor of the Baptist church. Burial at Bond cemetery, near Raymond.

Rev. John Robinson was born in 1575 in Nottinghamshire, England. He entered Cambridge College, England in 1592 and was elected fellow in 1597 and completed his studies in preparation of the ministry in the college. He was a man of great learning and was a distinguished controversalist. He entered upon his duties as a minister, but was suspended by his bishop on account of the Puritanic qualities of his teaching. he then joined the Independents or Dissenters from the Church of England and became the pastor of a church at Scrooley, Eng. This congregation was greatly persecuted by the priests and bishops of the Established church- was put under arrest for a month for having attempted to leave the country for the sake of religious liberty. In 1609, however, this congregation settled in Holland at Leyden. Many English Dissenters followed and soon this people became a great congregation. This movement of these Puritans from England to Holland was their first pilgrimage, and was the origin of the name Puritan. After a residence at Leyden for about ten years, Rev. John Robinson planned for his people a settlement in America, and in1620 the Mayflower landed a colony of 101 persons at Plyouth,Massachusetts, that had embarked under the direction of this leader. He intended to follow with the remainder of his congregation in a short time, but in 1625 he sickened and died. The pilgrims at Leyden pledged their beloved pastor that they would transport his family to the American colony. This promise they faithfully performed, and about 1629 or '30 the Robinson family was settled in the New World.

The descent from Rev. John Robinson (1) is traced as follows; One son Isaac (2) settled at Scituate near Plymouth where he was in active relations with the colony in 1633. In 1639 he removed to Barnstable a part of the peninsula south of Cape Cod Bay. From 1641 to 1655 he was assistant to the governor. He died in Barnstable in 1700 the age of 90. Peter Robinson,(3) a son of Isaac, was one of the original members of the Scotland Parish in the town of Wyndham Connecticut in 1735. His son Peter (4) was one of nine children and lived in Ryndham. Experience Robinson (5), son of last named Peter, was one of twelve children. Andrew Robinson (6) son of Experience, was one of six children. He lived at Tyndham and died there in 1849 at the age of 86. Lucy Robinson (7)and Dorcas Robinson (7) were daughters of Andrew. Lucy married Aaron Hill and was the mother of Waterman Hill (8) of Union County Ohio. of George Hill (8) of Colorado and of Augustus Hill (8) of Union County. Dorcas married Archibald Bates and was the mother of Andrew Robinson Bates (8), of Amelia Bates (8) and of Asa Bates all of Madison County, O. Mrs. Olive Spain (8), Miss Olive Newcomb of Union County O. was the daughter of the sister of Lucy and Dorcas.

p8c4 Michael Yealey died Wednesday. His son J. A. is principal of the public schools. He took his team and went into the woods for wood. On the return trip he walked along the road, driving the team and picking up an occasional ear of corn which had been dropped before him He died of apoplexy. He had been a resident of Union county since 1854. In that year he married Miss Katherine Struble of Williams County, who like himself had come from Germany but a year before. To this union were born eight children of whom four sons and three daughters are still living, together with the mother. Funeral at M. E. church at Milford.

pic4 Can Trace His Ancestry to Union County. Monroe Davenport, the great cartoonist of tne New York Journal is not exactly a product of Union county soil, but a nearby relative. He is a grandson of Benjamin Davenport, a famous physisian still held in memory by the older residents of Union and Champaign counties. Dr. Davenport lived in the now defunct town of Homer, in Union township and later at Woodstock. He was a brother-in-law of William DeForest Smith a pioneer of Darby township who was the father of the late Wm. Henry Smith, for a long time manager of the Associated Press.

One of DeForest Smith's daughters, Mary Adelaide was married to L. M. Fairbanks who has for his life companion the daughter of another prominent former citizen the late Judge Philander B. Cone. Another of DeForest Smith's sons, C. W. Smith has become one of the greatest railroad magnates of the century. In his youth while still on a farm in Darby Township he became acqauainted with Dr. Davenport's son Timothy, who became the father of the great cartoonist. 1 column

6c3 Mrs. Elizabeth W. Nichols was born in Tuscarawas county New York March 26, 1832 and died at the residence of Mrs. |. W. Price near Kirkersville Station. Febraury 29, 1898 agd 65 years 10 months 24 days. She was the eldest daughter of Walter and Charlotte Willis. They removed their family to Michigan, near Ann Arbor when Elizabeth was nine y ears old. Her educational training was received in the public schools and at Leoni Seminary in which institution she afterward held the position of teacher for several years until 1862 when she was married to Rev. Adam Crooks. She entered upon the ardous duties of a pastor's wife. Their last service together was in Syracuse, New York when Mr. Crooks was editor of the "American Wesleyan". In 1874 she was made a widow by the death of Mr. Crooks but retained connection with the Wesleyan until 1876 when she was married to Obadiah Nichols and moved to Pataskala, O About 1883 they took up residence in Marysville until the death of Mr. Nichols November 4, 1897. In Marysville she was identified especially with the WCTU.

c5 Lester J. Webster was born September 13, 1847 Delaware County and died at his home near Pharisburg March 1,1898, aged 80 years 5 months 18 days. He moved to Union county, near Irwin in 1824 where he learned the carpenter trade with Gen. William B. Irwin. He moved to Leesburg Township about 25 years ago. He was married to Miss Mercy Dee October 8, 1844. They celebrated their golden wedding in 1891. To them were born eight children- three sons and five daughters. one son, the eldest born, gave his young live a sacrifice to liberty and right. The remaining children are all living and were present at their father's funeral except one daughter who lived in Kansas. On 12th of April 1892, the wife and mother passed to the higher life. He enlisted in Co. B 32d OVI serving nearly two years and being discharged at the end of that time for disability. He was a member of the Universalist church. p8c2 W. A. Cavis was born August 14, 1823 at Carlisle, Cumberland county, Pennsylvania. He came to Marysville in 1844 and the next year he was united in marriage with Eliza Mather who survives him. To them were born nine children all of whom are living and were present at the funeral. He died Friday March 4, 1898 age 74 years 6 months 18 days. He served as orderly and the ranking lieutenant of company F. 66th OVI p1c3 Ryan Chapel Aunt Jane Thomas died Tuesday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Adam Richey. Funeral services at the home, interment at Mt. Hermon.

pic4 Henry A. Walke was born near Milford Center Dec. 15, 1833 and died Mar. 3, 1898 at the residence of his son in Hamilton, Ohio. His parents were William and Virginia Walke who came from Norfolk, Virginia and settled at Chillicothe afterward, buying a large tract of land between Woodstock and Milford Center. He was a nephew of the late Commodore Walke of the U. S. Navy and comes from a historic family, the first of whom was sent by King George to the Barbados Islands, thence to a position in Virginia and was appointed commander-in-chief of the Colonial army between 1694 and 1700. He received an excellent education and when quite young was interested in penmanship and devoted much time to its perfection and to the teaching of writing and drawing. He then took a position with the Johnson Book Co. of New York traveling as general manager in the United States and Canada. In 1876 he invented the first fountain pen since which the greater part of his time has been spent in the invention and manufacture of seven different kinds of fountain pens in Canada, Providence, R.I. Hamilton and Columbus, O. He has made his home with his daughter Mrs. Clint D. Malin North Lewisburhg for the last ten years Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Dr. Rexford, Columbus. Vault, Milford Center.

pic5 Mrs. Sarah E. Amrine wife of Samuel Amrine died yesterday. Consumption. Her age was 45 years 11 months and 23 days. She was born in Wood County and in 1873 was united in marriage to Mr. Amrine. Two grown sons and a daughter 12 years of age survive her. Funeral services by Rev. E. E. McCammon of the M. E. church.

p5c5 Millcreek Township sustained a great loss in the death of Mrs. Zeb Tossey. She was 42. Funeral at M. E. church conducted by Rev. Caris of the Christian church. also p8c2 p7 Lottie Ellen, daughter of John A. and Ella Connelly was born May 26, 1879, married to Hubert Poling April 21, 1897 and died February 21, 1898 aged 18 years 2 months 24 days. Funeral was held at Zion church conducted by Rev. Laughlin. She was a member of Mt. Zion church. She leaves a mother, two sisters, a husband and a darling baby boy aged 17 days.

p7c2 Mrs. Jane Gates Thomas was born March 2, 1819 in Granville O. She was the daughter of Eliza Gates and was one of three children, only one of whom is still living. In 1843 she was united in marriage to Timothy Thomas of which union eight children were born, seven of whom are still living. (n 1862, the family came to Union county). She died March 8, 1898. Mount Hermon cemetery. Burgis B. Worthington, the infant and second son of Richard L. and Dora Worthington was born December 7, 1897 and died March 6, 1898, 2 months and 27 days. York Cemetery. p5 Miss Alice Hodgdins residing south of Jerome, was instantly killed by lightning last Tuesday, while feeding stock in the barnyard at her home.

p8c2 Mrs. Margaret McAdow Davis wife of Finley Davis, York Township died Friday aged 67 years 6 months and 21 days. She leaves besides her husband, a family of two sons and two daughters. She was an active worker in the M. E. Church. Funeral services were held at McKendree church in charge of Rev. Keister.

c3 Mrs. Pearl Howard of Woodstock died Saturday. She was 69 years of age and the mother of four living children among them the well-known Anson Howard of Milford Center. Funeral at Woodstock in charge of Rev. J. W. Henley of the Universalist church.

p5c3 A cable gram has been received announcing the death at Tunchow, China of Mrs. C. W. Mateer. She is a relative of Mrs. Mary E. Southard. She had spent 3 years as a missionary in china and with her husband founded the first Christian college in that land. Mrs. Mateer graduated from Delaware college. The highest honors ever paid a foreign missionary by the Chinese government were conferred upon Mrs. Mateer in recognition of her services in famine relief some years ago. p5c5 Mrs. Nancy Graham of Dover Township, mother of Stephen Graham, was today declared insane by Judge McCampbell. It was feared by her relatives that she would take her life and it was thought best to have her committed to the State hospital for treatment. Sheriff Robinson conducted her to Columbus this morning.

McCammon. p4c2 Margaret Ciger Trout was born in Fairfield county O. in the year 1813 and died April 16, 1898 at he home north of Dover age 85 years 6 months and 4 days. She was united in marriage to Noah Trout March 15, 1835 and united with the Methodist church in 1840. She leaves a husband one son, five grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren and 21 great, great grandchildren. p5c3 The death of Mrs. Anna Margaret Koerner, relict of J. M. Koerner, who was a resident of Paris Township occurred Thursday at her home in Columbus. The funeral was held Sunday and was attended by the following relatives from here: Justus Scheiderer and wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Koerner, John Assman and wife, Mrs. John P. Rausch, Conrad Wolff and wife and Chris Koerner. p6c4 Reuben P. Frazell was born in Johnstown, Licking county, Ohio December 20, 1818 and died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Nelson Tway at Kileville, O. April 12, 1898 aged 79 years 3 months and 22 days He joined the Methodist church at the age of 16 years. He was married to Mary W. Odell in 1838. Five children were the fruit of this marriage, four daughters and one son; two daughters, still living. They moved to Marysvillein1853. Four years ago he moved to Dayton with his daughter, Mrs. Ainsworth.

P5C3 Charles Arthur, the venerable father of Attorney F. T. Arthur of this city died Tuesday in Scioto township, Delaware County. His age was 85 years and 2 months. Funeral services at the home. Rev. Thomas Graham of Richwood officiating.

him 72 years 5 months and 23 days of age. His parents came to Union county in 1837 and settled on the farm which was occupied by the deceased prior to his death. William was the youngest of twelve children, three of whom are living, viz; Jane M. Liggett, Denver, Colorado, Mary E. McCampbell of Middleton, Ind. and Dr. D. W. Henderson of Marysville. In 1850 he bought 34 acres of the old homestead and several years later bought out all the heirs and owned the whole farm of 140 acres. To this he kept adding until he possessed 600 acres. December 1870 Mr. Henderson was married to Elizabeth Sewell, who with their son Frank, a student at Ohio Wesleyan University, survive him. Funeral services were held at the home. Dr. Cherrington, of Delaware, Rev. Dobyns of New California and Rev. Rogers of Jerome officiated. Oakdale Cem, p2c2 Martin Scheiderer died Saturday at the home of his son Fredrick Scheiderer who lives on the old home farm where the father had resided since coming to Union County in 1839. He was 83 years and 4 months of age. He was born in Province Balern, Germany in 1815 and came to Columbus, Ohio in 1836. There he was united in marriage to Eva Dorothy Schroll and they removed to Union county three years later. Mrs. Scheiderer died seven years before her husband. Of their nine children, seven are living. He was a leading member of St. John's Lutheran church.
