Deforest

Heman Packard^ Deforest* (Isaac,- Robert^) was born at (North Bridgewater) Brockton 20 Aug. 1839, only son of Isaac Packard, born at North Bridgewater 11 Aug. 1800, and grandson of Robert and Sarah (Hay ward). His mother, Jane Baker, was born at North Bridgewater 1 June 1804, daughter of Howard Packard and Jane (Gapen). The name of the first ancestor who came to this country was Samuel Packard who came from Wymondham, England (Norfolk), 1638, and settled first at Hingham, then permanently at West Parish of Bridgewater.

He graduated from Yale B.A., 1862, Yale Divinity School 1866, D.D., Olivet College, Mich., 1893. He is a minister. He resided at North Bridgewater, West Attleboro, Westboro, Taunton, New Haven, Conn., Chicago, 111., Detroit, Mich., and came to Lexington in 1906.

George Brewster^ Dennett (Richard,^ JohnO was born at Portsmouth, N. H., 25 Mar. 1834, son of Richard, born at Portsmouth 14 Aug. 1799, and grandson of John and Jane (Brewster). His mother, Nancy L. Cate, was born at Tamworth, N. H., 13 Aug. 1807, daughter of Joseph and Nancy ( ). He is descended from John Dennett who came from Sussex, England, and settled at Portsmouth, N. H.

He came to Lexington to reside in April 1852. He enlisted 18 Aug. 1861 in Co. E, 12th Mass. Inf'y, discharged 2 Feb. 1865, at expiration of service. He was taken prisoner 5 May 1864, at the Battle of the Wilderness and sent to Andersonville Prison. During Sherman's march through Georgia the weakest prisoners were transferred to Florence, S. C. He was exchanged from there, reaching Lexington 2 Jan. 1865. He has been a carpenter.

Peterboro, N. H., 29 July 1828. He was a drummer in Capt. Parker's company 19 April 1775, and served through the Revolution. He married Rebecca Simonds, born 1 Aug. 1763, died at Peterboro, N. H., 8 Apr. 1855, daughter of John* and Mary (Tufts).

His mother, Jane Johnstone, was born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland, 28 Sept. 1830, daughter of William Syble and Elizabeth (Ren wick).

Mark^ Dodd (Aleck,^ Aleck ^) was born in Co. Sligo, Ireland, 12 May 1864, tenth child of Aleck. His mother, Rebecca Foy, was born in Co. Sligo, Ireland, daughter of John and Rebecca (Tylor).

Chester Eaton^ Dodge (John A.,- Jesse^ was bom at Cambridge 11 May 1887, only son of John Albert, born at Granville, N. S., 6 Jan. 1838, and grandson of Jesse and Deborah (Bent). His mother, Fannie Gertrude Clark, was born at Lakeport, N. H., 19 May 1862, daughter of Benjamin Batcheldor and Mary Ann (Eaton).

James Stephen^ Doe (William W.,^ Stephen^) was born at Falmouth, Me., 12 Aug. 1856, youngest son of William Winslow, born at Sumner, Me., 16 Oct. ? 1816, and grandson of Stephen and ( ) (Winslow). His mother, Mary Ann Gill, was born at Watertown 1822, daughter of James E. and Eliza (Harrington). He became a resident of Lexington about 1860.

Theodore Haskell' Dorr (John,' Ebenezer*) was born at Boston 15 Aug. 1815, died 1875, 16th child of John, bom at Boston 29 Oct. 1770, and grandson of Ebenezer and Abigail (Cunningham). His mother, Esther Goldthwait, was bom at Boston 9 Oct. 1775, daughter of Benjamin and Sarah White (Dawes). The ancestor, Joseph Dorr, came from England and settled at Boston {?).

He was graduated from Harvard A. B. in 1835, and from Harvard Divinity School in 1838. He was a Unitarian minister. He lived at Boston, Winchendon, Billerica, Sherbom, and East Lexington. In most of those places if not in all he was settled as a minister. He was settled at East Lexington 2 July 1845, and came to Lexington again in May 1863, after leaving Sherbom.

1. Samuel^ Downing (Caleb^ was bom at Lynn 12 Mar. 1757, son of Caleb and Sarah (Coates) . He was descended from Malcolm Downing who came from Scotland and settled at Lynn. He probably came to Lexington about 1777. He was first taxed in 1778.

He married first Susanna Brown, born 17 June 1764, died 29 Apr. 1843, daughter of Benjamin* and Sarah (Reed); secondly Eunice Bridge, daughter of Francis^ and Eunice (Brown).

Bertha Carol Downing was born at Kennebunk, Me., 22 Mar. 1863, daughter of Justin Streeter, born at Kennebunk, Me., 12 Nov. 1834, and granddaughter of Isaac and Caroline (Kimball). Her mother, Jane Allcock Stiles, was bom at Saco, Me., 20 Oct. 1840, daughter of Edward and Julia Ann (Townsend) . The first ancestor who came to this country was Emanuel Downing from England or Wales, who settled at Salem. Isaac Downing's mother was Mary- Clark, a niece of Jonas Clarke, Jr., who went to Kennebunk, Me.; Jonas Clarke, having no children, adopted her.

She was educated in the Boston public schools; Radcliffe College; Woman's Medical College of Pa., 1896; Fellow Alumnae Association of Woman's Medical College, 1905-06, 1906-07; Honorary Fellow Clark University, Worcester, 1905-07; Ph.D., Clark, 1910, Research "Sub-Normal Children." She has been a teacher, superintendent of school department New Jersey Training School for Feeble-Minded, and is now a practicing physician. She lived in Lexington from 1902 to 1909.

1. Nathan^ Dudley* (Joseph,^ Joseph, ^ Joseph,^ Francis^) was born at Concord 17 June 1755, died 17 July 1835, g. s., son of Joseph, born 24 July 1719, and Mary (Brown). He was descended from Francis Dudley, supposed to be a relation of Gov. Thomas Dudley, who was born in England and emigrated to this country about 1663.-

1. Nathaniel^ Dunklee* married Mary French, born at Billerica 3 Apr. 1670, died 17 Sept. 1729, daughter of Lieut. William and Mary (Lathrop-Stearns). He owned lands at Cambridge Farms in 1699. He and his wife Mary were received into the church at Lexington by a letter of dismission from the Watertown church. He resided in the northern part of the town. The following are presumably the children of Nathaniel and Mary.

He married 17 Oct. 1734 Damaris Wilson of Cambridge, bom 25 Aug. 1710, daughter of Andrew and Hannah (Williams). He removed to Billerica soon after the birth of his daughter Damaris, where he resided until about 1761, when he removed to Souhegan West, now Amherst, N. H. His wife was dismissed from the Lexington church to the church at Billerica in 1743.

1. Otis'^ Earle (Nelson^) was bom at Chester, Vt., 14 July 1812, son of Nelson and Nancy (Coleman), and descended from John Earle who came from England, and was one of six Squires who were the founders of Providence, R. I.

He was educated in the district schools and at Thetford Academy, Vt. He moved to Lexington in 1896. He has been a railroad conductor, express agent and collector of taxes 1908-12. He is a Free Mason.

He married at Concord, 4 'Aug. 1877, Susie Maria Thompson, born at Linneus, Me., daughter of John and Amanda (French); secondly at Chicago, 111., 28 Mar. 1895, Rose Estelle Eaton, born at Winchester, N. H., 7 May 1869, daughter of Ames Chamberlain and Eugenia Smith (Howard).

He was educated in the public schools and Thetford Academy, Thetford, Vt. He is a Free Mason and his vocation is that of a railroad conductor. He came to Lexington in 1888.

He married at Concord, 13 June 1888, Caroline Buttrick Hall, born at Concord 7 Apr. 1867, daughter of George Fletcher and Caroline (Buttrick).

William Edgar^ Eaton (David ^) was born at Wilton, Me., 27 Aug. 1861, younger son of David, born at Wilton, Me., died at Gettysburg, Pa., 15 Aug. 1863. His mother, Elizabeth Clark, was bom in Nova Scotia, daughter of John. He became a resident of Lexington Oct. 1892.

He married first at Rockport, 17 Mar. 1880, Mary Louise Norwood, born at Rockport 1862, daughter of John B. and Martha (Andrews) ; secondly 5 Jan. 1893 Genevieve Manning, born at Charlestown 3 Feb. 1876, daughter of Stephen Bent and Nancy Elizabeth (Richards).

ii. Benjamin. From an account book containing a journal in his handwriting, it appears that he worked for Isaac Stone of Lexington from August 1755 to November 1757. He describes with minuteness his cruise to the West Indies in the privateer ' Pownall ' of Massachusetts from 8 Dec. 1757 to 24 June 1758. He was present on 10 March in a smart action with the French in which the magazine of a French vessel took fire and blew up the ship with disastrous results to its crew. From June 1758 to April 1759 he worked for Isaac Stone again. He started out in the French War and arrived 16 May 1759 at Albany, to be an assistant to Jonas Cutler, the sutler, and remained till 20 Nov. 1759. From Dec. 1759 to 20 May 1760 he was again with Stone. From June 1760 to 18 Nov. 1760 he was at Albany and vicinity. From March 1761 to March 1762 he was again with Stone, and about 1768 he settled at Woburn, where he died 19 Oct. 1819, aged 84. He served with Walker's (Wobum) company, Lexington Alarm Rolls, 19 April 1775, and in the Revolutionary War rose to the rank of captain. See State List, Vol. v., pp. 214, 215, 217.

1. George Henry^ Emery (James W.,^ Thomas^ was born at Boston 5 May 1834, son of James Woodman, born at Buxton, Me., 24 Aug. 1809, and grandson of Thomas and Mary (Woodman). His mother, Abigail Emmes Dill, was born at Boston 29 May 1809, daughter of John and Rebecca (Emmes). The name of the ancestor who first came to this country was Anthony Emery of England who settled at Newbury.

He married at Portland, Me., 4 Feb. 1860, Georgianna Walker Smith, bom at Portland, Me., 24 Jan. 1840, daughter of William and Dorcas Marston (Walker), (1802-1881).

He was educated in the common schools of Lexington, Boston University Law School, LL.B., 1905. He has been in the wholesale drug business, hotel business and is now a lawyer. He is a Mason.

He married at Waukegan, 111., 25 Oct. 1892, Franc Edith Johnson, born at Waukegan, 111., 10 Dec. 1869, daughter of Charles Lewis and Helen Adelaide (Case).

He graduated from Lexington high school in 1884, Boston University Law School, LL.B., 1893. He is a lawyer, president of the Field and Garden Club, and president of the Mount Pleasant Home for Aged Men and Women, Boston.

He married 29 May 1894 Grace Leland Harrington, born at East Rochester, N. H., 12 Oct. 1867, daughter of Larkin^ and Elizabeth Lavinia (Chesley).

1. Rev. Joseph^ Estabrook came from Enfield, Middlesex County, England, in 1660, graduated from Harvard 1664, and was settled at Concord in 1667, as colleague pastor with Rev. Edward Bulkley, where he lived until his death, 17 Sept. 1711.

He settled first at Hingham, and in 1710 he and his wife were dismissed from there to the Lexington church. He was elected deacon in 1716. He commanded a military company, filled the oflBces of town clerk, treasurer, assessor, selectman, and representative to the General Court; was often employed as a surveyor, and was engaged to teach the first man's school in town. He bought his farm of Edward Pelham, then of Rhode Island.

He married first 31 Dec. 1689-90 Millicent Woodis, or Woodhouse, died 20 Mar. 1692-93, daughter of Henry of Concord; secondly 25 Aug. 1693 Mrs. Hannah (Leavitt) Loring of Hingham, daughter of John and Sarah ( ), and widow of Joseph' Loring.

He married 29 Nov. 1693 Abigail Willard, daughter of Rev. Samuel of the Old South Church, Boston; she married secondly Rev. Samuel Treat of Eastham, and died 27 Dec. 1745, aged 82.

He settled first at Lexington; moved to Weston where he received the covenant 14 Dec. 1712, and in 1721, moved to Sudbury. In August 1722 Daniel Estabrook and Abigail, his wife, were recommended to the church at Sudbury.

He was a soldier in the French and Indian and Revolutionary wars. He left Lexington about 1777, and moved first to Lunenburg and afterward to West Cambridge, now Arlington.

He married Esther Russell, born (?) 23 Aug. 1763, died 5 July 1813, aged 49, (?) daughter of Daniel and Hannah (Robbins) of West Cambridge. He lived for a time at Danvers.

Willmm'' Estabrook, Jr. (? William,* Benjamin,^ Benjamin,* Joseph,^ Joseph,^ Joseph^) was born at Topsham, Vt. He enlisted 23 Sept. 1861 in Co. M, 1st Mass. Cavalry, transferred to Co. M, 4th Mass. Cavalry and discharged, 24 Sept. 1864 by reason of expiration of service.

Prince Estabrook, a negro, living in the family of Benjamin Estabrook, was among those who stood the fire of British troops, on Lexington Common, on 19 April 1775, at which time he was wounded. He served afterwards in almost every campaign of the war.

Willlim"^ Eustis (Benjamin,* Benjamin,^ William,^ William 0 was born at Cambridge 10 June 1753, died at Boston 6 Feb. 1825, son of Benjamin, bom 16 Apr. 1720, died 4 May 1804, and Elizabeth Hill, died 30 May 1775, aged 47, daughter of Abraham and Pmdence* (Hancock).

of the militia 19 April 1775, commissioned surgeon in Gridley's Artillery Regiment 19 April 1775 ; his name appears on the muster roll of Capt. Parker's company who were called to Cambridge 17-18 June 1775. 1 Jan. 1777 commissioned hospital surgeon and physician, occupying through the war the house of Beverly Robinson opposite West Point, He served from 1788 for six or seven years in the General Court, two terms in Congress, was Secretary of War 1809-13, minister to Holland 1814-18, in Congress 1820-23, and governor of Massachusetts 1823 to his death. "He hastened to his country's service on the eventful morning of the 19th of April 1775, And within the precincts hallowed by blood, which was shed on that day, After an honorable and useful life, he rests in peace and hope conformably to his last wish by his mother's side."

Joseph^ Evans (Joseph^) was born at Truro 22 Aug. 1848, died 2 July 1911, son of Joseph, born in Wales in 1825, and EHza Freeman, born at Brewster, daughter of Isaac and Sally (Merick). He came to Lexington in 1880.

He married at Dorchester, 9 May 1874, Caroline Hentz Clement, born at Dorchester 1854, daughter of William Bure and Maiy Matilda (Hill). Children:

Farmer

He was first taxed in 1748< He was a member of Capt. Parker's company on the morning of 19 April 1775, and was severely wounded by a bullet which struck his right arm, and so fractured the bone that he was not only disabled for a long time, but pieces of bone were extracted from it for several months afterward. The General Court of the time granted him £15, 15s. for loss of labor and the expense of surgical attendance.

He married Amity Cutler, born 19 Dec. 1707, died at Bedford 25 Dec. 1771, daughter of Thomas^ and Sarah (Stone); she married secondly 15 Jan. 1756, John Page of Bedford, who died 18 Feb. 1782.

His mother, Hannah Mann Whiting, was born at Hanover 7 July 1805, daughter of Thomas and Hannah (Mann). His immigrant ancestor was Thomas Faxon from England, who settled at Braintree.

He was graduated from Harvard, A.B. 1871, S.B. 1872, S.D. 1878. He is connected with the Agassiz Museum, Cambridge. He became a resident of Lexington, first in 1886, again in 1903.

He was graduated from Mass. Institute of Technology, 1871. He was engaged in commercial business until 1883, then in the profession of music until 1897, and now is president of mining companies. He became a summer resident in 1901 and a permanent resident in 1906.

Eben Rhoades^ Ferguson (Stephen^) was born at Charlestown 23 Feb. 1861, died 10 Nov. 1897, son of Stephen and Ellen (Sampson). He became a resident of Lexington in September 1895.

George Henry Estee' Fessenden (George F.,^ Charles P.^) was born at Charlestown 6 Mar. 1853, son of George Frederick, born at Charlestown, and grandson of Charles Pitt. His mother, Sarah Ann Estee, was born at Stow, daughter of ( ) Estee and Sarah R. (Gates). The first ancestor came from Scotland.

He married at Medford, 10 Aug. 1884, Elizabeth Allen, bom at Arlington 20 July 1861, daughter of David and Mary (Gray). They came to Lexington 19 Apr. 1894.

Fisher

Richard^ Fisher of Cambridge married 5 Dec. 1819 Elizabeth FisKE, born 15 June 1795, died in 1834, daughter of Joseph^ and Elizabeth (Stone).

1. David* Fiske,* who probably came to America in 1636, settled at WatertowTi, where, admitted freeman March 1637, he was selectman 1640, and '43. He married Sarah Smith, daughter of Edmund of Wrentham, Co. Suffolk, England,! but in his will, dated 10 Sept. 1660, and probated 22 Jan. 1662, no mention of his wife is made, and only his daughter Fitch, and son David, the latter being his " sole executer and residuary legatee." To this son were given the house, lands, cattle, and chattels of the father, and on 6 Aug. 1673, the son sold the homestead thus inherited, and two lots of land all located at Watertown to John Coolidge.

He was admitted freeman 26 May 1647, and early settled at Cambridge Farms, now Lexington. Here he headed the subscription list for building a meeting house in 1692; was the first town

clerk, and one of the selectmen. On 16 Oct. 1676 he and his wife Seaborn sold Samuel Page 149 acres in Watertown, which had been granted formerly to his father David Fiske. His will, dated 22 Jan. 1708, and proved or probated 20 Dec. 1711, mentioned his wife Seaborn, his son Nicholas Wyeth, "my daughter being dead," children David, Elizabeth, and Abigail, and his cousin Samuel Stone, the son of Dea. Samuel. His estate was inventoried at £405, 17s. 6d.

He married first Lydia Cooper, died 29 Nov. 1654, sister of Dea. John Cooper, and daughter of Dea. Gregory^ Stone's second wife; secondly 6 Sept. 1655, Seaborn Wilson, died at Woburn 12 Jan. 1721, daughter of Theophilus of Ipswich.

3. David^ Fiske (David,^ David^, born 15 Apr. 1650, died 23 Oct. 1729, g. s. He was a subscriber to the first meeting-house, 1692, and held the office of tythingman.

4. Jonathan* Fiske (David,^ David," David^), born 19 May 1679, died at Sudbury 27 Dec. 1740. He was a corporal, and an assessor, and owned the church covenant in 1704, in order that his children be baptized. He subscribed for the purchase of the Common in 1711, joined the church with his wife 24 Oct. 1708; and both were dismissed to the church at Sudbury in 1718, to which place he had moved, about 1713, and where he was made a deacon. Sutton. William had three children born at Sutton, xi. Sarah, b. 26 Sept. 1722; m. 9 Apr. 1746 Richard Heard of Sudbury, xii. Anna, b. 1724; m. 9 June 1747 Henry Smith of Sudbury. xiii. David, b. 4 Sept. 1726; m. at Sudbury, 5 Dec. 1750, Ruth Noyeb of Sudbury. Moved to Holden. They had 6ve children, xiv. Benjamin, b. 28 Mar. 1730; m. 1752 Abigail Maynard of Sudburj'.

He was a subscriber towards the purchase of the Common, 1711 ; admitted to the church, 1736, and lived on Hancock Street, in the J. F. Simonds' house. The present house, presumably the second, was erected in 1732. 6. Lieut. Ebenezer^ Fiske (David,^ David,^ David^), born 12 Sept. 1692, died 19 Dec. 1775, in his 85th year, g. s. He was a selectman for ten years between the years 1739 and 1758, and filled many other offices. He lived on the road to Concord, and at his house during the battle of April 19, 1775, the American, Hayward, of Acton aggressively met a British soldier while the latter was coming from the well, between whom shots were exchanged with fatal effect to both.

7. Dr. RoBERT5FisKE(Robert/David,3David,2DavidO,boral2 Jan. 1721-22, died between 1764 and 1767; was a physician, and in 1752 located at Woburn, where he was taxed from 1752 to 1762. He served in 1760 in the French war; and in 1764 is this entry in the town records, "Dr. Fiske and family came last from Woburn."

He married first Mrs. Abigail Grover; secondly (intention dated 27 July 1748) Betty Wilson, died 14 Dec. 1770.* Child by first wife, born at Lexington:

He was a physician, successor to his father, administered upon the latter 's estate, and lived in the same house. He was enrolled in Capt. Parker's company 1775.

In 1767 Widow Betty Fiske bought eighty acres of land at Lexington, bounded easterly on Woburn line, and westerly by land of Lemuel Simonds. Her will dated 4 Dec. 1770, and proved Sept. 1771, mentioned sons Robert, John and David, and daughters Betty and Ruth.

He was a resident in early life of the adjoining town of Woburn, where he became an inmate of Benjamin Edgell's family, arriving 11 Feb. 1771, and remaining 153 weeks, or till 20 July 1772. "Doct. Blodgett, "another Lexmgton young man, also left Edgell's house in Woburn on 20 July 1772. Benjamin Edgell in his account book stated that Doctor Blodgett had arrived as an inmate of his family at Woburn, 20 June 1769. f In Lexington he lived at the corner of Elm Avenue and Bedford Street, the place consisting of a house and an acre of land which he purchased of Mrs. Ruth Harrington in 1777.

He married Abigail Harrington, born 9 Aug. 1754, daughter of Robert" and Abigail (Mason), who died his widow at Woburn 14 Dec. 1848, aged 67.

He studied with Dr. John Warren and his son for seven years; he was surgeon in the Continental Army; present at the capture of Burgoyne and at the surrender of CornwalHs at Yorktown; one of t In Hurd, Hist, of Middlesex County, Vol. i., p. 370, is the statement that the 153 weeks may refer to Blodgett's stay, or to that of both of them, David Fiske, afterwards a doctor at Lexington, evidently standing to Blodgett in the light of a pupil and assistant. Benjamin Edgell, the recorder of these items, came to Woburn from Lexington, the place of his former residence, about 1768.

He moved to Boston in 1808 and was engaged in the pursuit of navigation till 1848. He however returned to Lexington in 1843 and bought a farm on present Lowell Street. He was a justice of the peace at Boston, an alderman there in 1843 and a representative to the General Court from 1833 to 1838.

He married Mary Gardner Kennard, born at Kittery, Mass., now Eliot, Me., 17 Oct. 1795, died 12 Jan. 1874, daughter of Timothy, a Revolutionary soldier, and Abigail (Stevens). He married 18 May 1823 Pamelia Brown, born at Lexington 29 July 1800, died 4 Aug. 1897, daughter of James Jr.^ and Pamelia (Munroe). They lived at West Cambridge, now Arhngton. He has been a farmer and house painter. In 1855 he worked at the navy yard on the steam frigate Merrimac, which was built that year. He has been elected to the Mass. Society of the Cincinnati as a successor of his father, and of his grandfather who was an original member.

23. Charles^ Fiske (Charles,^ Benjamin,^ Benjamin,^ Ebenezer," David,^ David,^ David^), born at Bangor, Me., 27 May 1834, died at Jamaica Plain 7 Oct. 1910. He served in the navy in the Civil War on the U.S. ship San Jacinto. Resided at Chicago, 111., New York City and Boston.

Samuel^ Fiske was bom at Salem 30 Sept. 1789. He came to Lexington when a child and lived there with John Chandler, who presented him for baptism 29 May 1803. He represented Lexington in the General Court in 1828, '29 and '30; remained at Lexington until about 1835 when he moved to Shirley, thence to Worcester.

Fitch

built the homestead on Adams St. in 1866, and resided there until his death. He enlisted 26 Sept. 1862 in Co. D, 45th Mass. Infantry, discharged 7 July 1863 at expiration of sen' ice.

Irving Pierson^ Fox (Henry J.,^ Thomas^ was born at Ashland, N. Y., 25 Aug. 1860, fifth son of Henry John, born at Hull, England, 13 May 1821, and grandson of Thomas and Sarah (Clark). His mother, Clarinda Strong White, was born at Ashland, N. Y., 15 Oct. 1827, daughter of Buel and Lydia (Woodbury).

He was educated in the preparatory department of the University of South Carolina, Hyde Park High School, Boston University, A.B. 1883. He is an editor and publisher, and has been engaged in newspaper work. He became a resident of Lexington 11 Sept. 1890.

He enlisted in the expedition against Canada in 1760 and suffered hardships for which his father presented a petition to the General Court for pecuniary recompense. He was in the fifth campaign to Ticonderoga in 1775, and the 15th at Providence, R. I., June 1778. He early became a resident of Lexington.

His mother, Alice Saunders, was born at Penobscot, Me., 22 Aug. 1822, daughter of Henry and Susan (Leach). Levi Franks came from France and settled at Gray, Me.

He received a common school education, went to sea at the age of sixteen, at twenty learned the carpenter's trade at Boston. On 1 May 1876 he was appointed a police officer on the Boston force; in July 1888 came to Lexington as a police officer and at present (1912) is serving as Chief of Police. He is a Mason.

Henry Weare^ French (Isaac S.,^ Joel^) was bom at Charlestown 21 Dec. 1843, only son of Isaac Somersby Parsons, born at Boscawen, N. H., 27 Sept. 1811, and grandson of Joel and Susannah (Gerrish). His mother, Lucinda Brazer, was born at Camden, Me., in 1810. The first ancestor in this country came from England and probably settled at Tewksbury, and was also one of the first settlers of Contoocook, N. H.

He received a common -school education, and three months' course under Prof. Richards in mineralogy at Technology. He was a clerk for two years in the U.S. Sub-Treasury during the Civil War, and a shoe manufacturer at Lynn. He was a member of the Lynn Common Council 1875-76. He is a Mason. He came to Lexington 29 Sept. 1889.

vi. Jonas, b. 10 Oct. 1820; d. iinm. 7 Apr. 1873. He served on the board of overseers of the poor, and on the school committee 1857, '59-71. He left $500 to the town of Lexington - the income to be expended "in purchasing such luxuries and delicacies for the inmates of the town almshouse as are not usually furnished them."

His mother, Jane Pearson, was born at Haverhill 10 Dec. 1811. The ancestor, William Goodwin, came from England in 1632, probably from Braintree in Essex, and settled at Newtown for three years. In 1635 he moved to Hartford, Conn., where he became one of its largest land-holders and "most sagacious of its early inhabitants."

He obtained his education in the public schools of Charlestown and Lexington, graduating with the first class of the High School. He was a wholesale druggist, an officer in various druggists' associations, a Knight Templar, a member of a church choir for 47 years, and a member of the Arion Male Quartette. He moved from Charlestown to Lexington in 1848; from 1858 to 1863 resided at Charlestown, returning to Lexington in 1863 for a permanent home. He was a member of the first board of trustees of the Lexington Savings Bank.

Samuel Henry' Gookin* (Samuel,^ John C.^) was born at Portsmouth, N. H., 21 May 1820, third son of Col. Samuel, born at Portland, Me., Dec. 1791, and grandson of John Cotton and Mary (Webber). His mother, Mary Patterson, was born at Beverly 1791, daughter of Capt. Thomas and Margaret (James). The ancestor, Daniel Gookin, came from England to Virginia in the ship Flying Harte, an original patentee of Virginia. His son Daniel came to Cambridge in 1644.

He received his education in private and public schools of Portsmouth, N. H., graduating from Mr. Harris's Academy. He was a dry goods' commission merchant. He was one of the founders of the Temple Club, Mercantile Library Association, Boston Board of Trade, Hist. Gen. Soc, Mass. Inst. Technology, Academy of Natural History, Boston Theatre, Y. M. C. U., and one of the committee to receive the Prince of Wales upon his visit to Boston, 1860.

He was a member of Capt. Parker's company and was present with it on the Common 19 April 1775; was also with the detachment of the company called to Cambridge 10 May and 17 June 1775. He lived in the north part of the town, on Grove St. His will*, dated 17 Apr. 1805, was probated 5 Sept. 1815.

He married 21 Jan. 1766 Abigail Reed, born 22 Sept, 1744, daughter of William" and Abigail (Stone) . They were admitted to the church together 8 Nov. 1767, and dismissed to the Littleton church 20 Jan. 1793.

He resided at Woburn at the time of his marriage, 1782; was listed as a member of Walker's (Woburn Precinct - Burlington) militia company, 1782, and was taxed, under the name of Headley in Woburn 2d Parish List, 1782. He was in Woburn at Samuel Dean's house with wife Lucy, being then from Lexington, 21 Oct. 1782, and again at same house, and from same town, with wife and two children, Benjamin and Samuel, on 3 Jan. 1786. - Woburn Town Rec. x. 221,448. Several papers regarding his military service are preserved in the Woburn Public Library. He served under Capt. William Green for three months, at Rhode Island, in 1780. His mother, Susan Faulkner, was born at Acton 21 Feb. 1772, daughter of Col. Francis. It is believed the first Hamlin, who came from England, settled at Harvard.

He was educated at Bridgton Academy, Me. ; Bowdoin College, A.B., 1834; Bangor Theological Seminary, 1837; received the degree of D.D. from Bowdoin, 1854; S.T.D. from Harvard, 1861; and LL.D. from New York University, 1870. He was a missionary and educator; and, all included in his great work as a pioneer missionary, he engaged in the profession of architect; physician; inventor; baker and contractor; maker of stoves, rat traps, and washing machines; assistant electrician; general skilled mechanic; author; and maker of first steam-engine constructed in Maine. He belonged to the Congregational church, and was a member of the American Antiquarian Society and Lexington Historical Society. He was the head of Bebek Theological Seminary, Constantinople, Turkey, 1839-1860; founder and builder of Robert College, Constantinople, and president from 1860 to 1876. He was professor in Bangor Theological Seminary from 1877 to 1880, and president of Middlebury College from 1880 to 1886. As a writer he was the author of Among the Turks, and My Life and Times; he was also a contributor to

The North American Review, The Congregationalist, Our Day, The Outlook, The Youth's Companion, The Missionary Review, and many other papers and magazines.

1. Nathaniel^ Hancock (Nathaniel^) was born at Cambridge 18 Dec. 1639, died 2 Apr. 1719, son of Nathaniel, who came to Cambridge in 1635, and Jane or Joane ( ). He was elected deacon of the church 7 June 1705.

He married first 8 Mar. 1663 Mary Prentice, born 25 Nov. 1644, died 20 Sept. 1699, daughter of Henry and Joanna ( ) of Cambridge; secondly 26 Dec. 1699 Sarah Green, who married secondly 21 June 1720 John^ Cooper of Cambridge and was living in 1736.

He graduated from Harvard, 1689, and on 7 Nov. 1697 he was chosen to preach until May as a candidate. He was ordained at Lexington 2 Nov. 1698. He probably resided in that part of Cambridge which is now Newton, as in the Lexington church record which he kept is this entry: - "16 Octob"": 1690: I was Receaved Into the full Communion with the church of chrift In this place by Virtue of a Letter of Difmisfion from the Church of chrift In Newtowne."

ii. Thomas, b. 13 July 1703; m. 5 Nov. 1730 Lydia Henchman; d. 1 Aug. 1763, without issue. He was a successful merchant of Boston and accumulated a large fortune. In 1735 he enlarged his father's house by building on the two-storied part; this afterwards became the property and residence of Rev. Jonas Clarke, his father's successor.

1. Robert^ Harrington, an Englishman, the ancestor of the Harrington family of Lexington, came to Watertown in 1642, took the oath of fidelity, 1652, was selectman of Watertown, 1679, 1681- 83, 1691-1700, died there 17 May 1707, aged 91.

He married 17 Nov. 1681 Hannah Winter, died 17 July 1741, daughter of John^ and Hannah (Cutler) of Watertown but afterwards of Cambridge Farms.

He married first 18 Oct. 1681 Sarah Whitney, born 17 Mar. 1653-54, died 8 June 1720, daughter of John and Ruth (Reynolds) of Watertown; secondly 25 Oct. 1720 Elizabeth (Bridge) Garfield, born 17 Aug. 1659, daughter of Matthew^ and Anne (Danforth) Bridge of Cambridge, and widow of Capt. Benjamin Garfield of Weston.

His name appears on our records for the first time in 1713 when he went before the selectmen and offered, on certain conditions, to give a right of way for a road across his land. His residence must have been easterly of Hancock Hill. Some articles in the inventory of his estate show the fashion of the day - "To one new Blew

He was a blacksmith and settled at Lexington; his name first appears upon our church records in 1712, when he owned the covenant and his son Samuel was baptized. He was chosen a fence viewer in 1713, so he must have been a permanent resident at that time. He was a cousin of John who came from Watertown about the same time, these two being the ancestors of the large family of Harringtons.

He married first Sarah Laughton, died 19 May 1760, daughter of Dea. Johni and Sarah (Swayn); secondly Abigail (Marble) Blodgett, died 23 Jan. 1820, aged 94, widow of Ebenezer^ Blodgett, by whom he had no issue.

He filled many town offices and bore the title of ensign; he was one of the selectmen in 1752, and reelected to that office some twelve or fourteen years, and chairman of the board during the Revolution. He was also a magistrate for many years and for four years represented the town in the General Court.

He married first Abigail Mason, born 23 Nov. 1721, died 15 Aug. 1778, daughter of DanieP and Experience (Newcomb) of Newton. They were admitted to the church at Lexington 11 Aug. 1745. 10. Jonathan^ Harrington (Robert,' Daniel, ^ Robert^), born 21 Mar. 1722-23, died 14 Sept. 1809. He was for several years a selectman, and one of the committee of correspondence, 1778.

He married first Mrs. Abigail (Moore) Dunster, died 20 June 1776, widow of Henry Dunster of Cambridge; secondly 18 Nov. 1777 Lydia (Stone) Mulliken, born 20 Sept. 1729, died 13 Nov. 1785, daughter of John^ and Mary (Reed) Stone, and widow of NathanieP Mulliken.

He married Mary Reed, born 17 July 1751, died 23 Oct. 1822, daughter of William^ and Abigail (Stone). They were admitted to the church 15 June 1776.

He married Ruth Blodgett, born 29 Aug. 1735, daughter of Samuel.^ They were admitted to the church 2 June 1763. Children, all born at Lexington: i. Henry,8 b. 25 May 1760; m. 13 Mar. 1783 Amitt Peirce, b. 26 Aug. 1765, dau. of Solomon* and Amity (Fessenden). They lived at Boston and New Orleans, La., and had several children.

iii. Samuel, b. 3 Oct. 1764; m. 29 Aug. 1788 Mart Stimpson; d. at Westminster 4 May 1824. His name is on the tax list of 1788 but disappeared the following year.

He married Sarah Locke, born 23 Aug. 1746, died 12 Jan. 1813, daughter of Joseph^ and Sarah ( ). Children, iii. not on Lexington records: ses. i. JosEPH.6 b. 16 Feb. 1770.

Tradition says he had three daughters, but there is no record of their birth, Sally above being the only one of whom we have any information.

15. Jonathan^ Harrington (Henry, ^ John,' John,^ Robert^, born 6 Mar. 1744-45. He was killed on the Common by the British on the morning of 19 April 1775.

He married 13 Feb. 1766 Ruth Fiske, born 10 Apr. 1746, daughter of Dr. Robert^ and Mrs. Abigail (Grover) ; she married secondly 8 Feb. 1777 John Smith of Boston.

No record of his family except the birth of one child. Perhaps he moved "into the country." His name is upon the tax list in 1776 but was omitted in 1778.

He married Mrs. Sarah Johnson (? born 27 Feb. 1755, dstughter of Joseph^ and Kezia (Gove) Loring of Lexington, and widow of Obadiah^ Johnson), died 29 Nov. 1819, aged 65.

18. Thaddeus^ Harrington (Robert,* Daniel, ^ Robert,^ Robert^), no record of birth qr death. He was in the Battle of Lexington. (?) "Mr. Thaddeus Harrington 6 Feb, 1797."*

He married Lydia Porter of Woburn, baptized at Beverly 26 Dec. 1742, died Jan. 1821, daughter of William and Lydia (Batchelder). They were admitted to the church 22 Apr. 1771.

He was clerk of Capt. Parker's company and participated in the Battle of Lexington; he was a prominent man and filled various posts of honor and trust; he was selectman, 1779, '85, '86. Called "Capt." in Jonathan Harrington's list.

He was the fifer of Capt. Parker's company, and one of the youngest defenders of his country, also the last survivor of the Battle of Lexington. His death produced a marked sensation in the commimity, and his funeral was attended by the governor, lieutenantgovernor, the members of the council, the senate and house of representatives, by officers of the militia, and prominent citizens generally. Two companies of militia, ordered out by the governor, did escort duty at his interment and fired a volley over his grave.

He was captain of the Lexington Artillery, and was promoted to the lieutenant-colonelcy. He lived at Lexington until about 1811 when he moved to Salem.

Henry^ Harris (Abner,' Abner,'^ Jonathan^ was born at Providence, R. I., 11 Oct. 1809, died 17 Oct. 1868, son of Abner, bora 1779, and grandson of Abner. His mother was Martha Farmer. He was descended from Thomas Harris, who came from Shrewsbury, England, to Mass, in 1631, went with Roger Williams to Rhode Island in 1636 and settled at Providence.

He married at Boston, 6 Feb. 1832, Emeline Bryant, born at South Reading 3 Aug. 1814, died 13 Sept. 1890. They resided at Boston for many years and became residents of Lexington in 1853.

William' Hartwell (William^) was born at Bedford 12 Jan. 1797, died 14 Jan. 1888, eldest child of William, born 25 June 1770, died 8 May 1819. His mother was Joanna Davis born at Bedford 19 Aug. 1769, died 30 Oct. 1808, daughter of Eleazer and Rebekah (Putnam).

He married 30 Nov. 1826 Ruhamah Webber, born at Bedford 14 Apr. 1802, died 31 Aug. 1879, daughter of Asa and Eliot (Lane). They resided at Concord and came to Lexington about 1839. Children :

He embarked for this country in the Elizabeth 10 Apr. 1634, from Ipswich, England, and settled at Watertown, where he was admitted freeman 6 May 1635. He was selectman from 1638 to 1643, and again from 1650 to 1671 ; clerk three years and representative in 1671. He also held the office of deacon. His will was dated 12 Mar. 1685, proved 7 Sept. 1685.

V. William, bapt. 13 July 1690; d. 20 Oct. 1723, m his 35th y., g. s. at Waltham; m. Abigail' Simonds of Lexington, who m. (2) John Knight of Wobum. Had sons William Hastings and Edmund Hastings, who are named in the will of their grandfather Joseph Simonds of Lexington, in 1733.

3. Samuel' Hastings (John,^ Thomas^), baptized 10 July 1698, died 3 Mar. 1758. He was a tailor and resided in that part of Watertown now Waltham. He was selectman several years.

He was one of the minute-men on the Common, 19 April 1775, and was also with the army at Cambridge when Gen. Washington took command. He settled in the southwest part of Lexington and was often elected to places of honor and trust in the town.

He was on the Common with Capt. Parker's company on the morning of 19 April 1775, at the capture of Burgoyne, and also detailed to guard the prisoners at Prospect Hill, Charlestown, now Somerville. In 1808 he was chosen deacon of the church and became a leading member.

He married Sarah Stearns, born 29 Dec. 1761, died 14 Mar. 1833, aged 74, g. s., daughter of Phinehas^ and Mary (Wellington). They were admitted to the church 10 Feb. 1782.

He was on the Common with Capt. Parker, 19 April 1775, volunteered soon after and was detailed as one of Gen. Lee's life-guard and taken prisoner with him at Long Island. He was major of the Lexington Artillery. His grand-daughter writes: "My father's brothers and sisters were all born in the same house, the old Nelson- Hastings house which stood on the road to Concord, a hack road running from the point where the old Viles tavern used to stand, and parallel to the 'main-travelled road.' The house where my father's family were born is where my seven brothers and sisters were born. The confusion between Lincoln and Lexington comes from the fact of my grandfather's farm lying in both towns, and the dividing line placed the house within the Lincoln boundary, but all the relations were all with Lexington."

He married at Lincoln, 21 Apr. 1808, Nancy Adams of Lincoln, born 13 June 1788, died at Brighton 31 Dec. 1851, daughter of Capt. Bulkley and Persis (Stone).

He served in the War of 1812 as a private in Capt. Samuel Townshend's company of Light Infantry from Waltham in Valentine's 1st Regiment Mass. Militia.

iv. Maria Chandler, b. 16 Apr. 1828; m. Lucius Gale Pratt of Brattleboro, Vt.; d. at West Newton 3 Sept. 1858. They had three children born at Brattleboro, Vt.

vi. Oliver, b. 8 Aug. 1831; m. 1866 Mrs. Sarah Amsden of Lawrence, Kansas; d. at Webb City, Mo., 15 Sept. 1891. He went to Kansas in 1856 with a company of young men from Galesburg, 111., to fight if necessary for its Free-Statehood. They were disarmed by U.S. troops as soon as they crossed the border, but remained to become loyal citizens of the new state. He enlisted in 1861 in the 2d Kansas Regt. Child: Oliver Amsden,^ b. 1867.

viii. Adelaide, b. 15 Oct. 1836; m. at Brattleboro, Vt., George Washington Wood of Galesburg, III., b. at Westford, Vt., 29 Apr. 1832. They had three children* b. at Galesburg, 111., one at Chicago, 111., and one at Quincy, 111.
