Ralph Gent^ Wells (Martin L.,2 Lemuel G.^ was born at Lawrenceburg, Ind., 15 July 1879, son of Martin Lemuel, D.D., born in Jennings Co., Ind., 1835, and grandson of Lemuel G. and Margaret (Hawkins). His mother, Mattie Gent, was born in Ohio, 1835, daughter of Thomas and Martha (Wilderson).

He was educated at the public schools of Indianapolis, Ind., and in the Harvard Law School; owing to ill health he was obliged to leave the latter before graduation. He became a resident of Lexington in Oct. 1906.

Charles Tucker^ West (Ezra T.,^ Oilman^) was born at Plymouth, Vt., 2 Nov. 1844, died at Strafford, Vt., 27 July 1908, eldest son of Ezra Tucker, born at Vershire, Vt., 12 Feb. 1815. His mother was Lemira Bacon, born at Vershire, Vt., 3 Dec. 1821, daughter of Simeon.

He enlisted 11 Aug. 1862 in Company B, 4th Vt. Infantry, discharged 19 June 1865 by reason of expiration of ser\dce. He became a resident of Lexington 1 Nov. 1871. He was a fire insurance agent and undertaker. He was town treasurer part of 1879 and 1880, and 1881-86; selectman 1887-89; tax collector; and trustee of the Lexington Savings Bank. He was a Free Mason.

He married first 15 Feb. 1872 Mary Wright Russell, bom at Arlington 2 Nov. 1848, died 20 Mar. 1874, daughter of Josiah H.^ and Mary A. (Willard) ; secondly 7 May 1875 her sister, Fannie A. Russell, born 10 Nov. 1845.

born at Warwick, R. I., 18 July 1784, and grandson of Caleb and Susannah (Greene). His mother, Mary Hopkins Tibbetts, was born at East Greenwich, R. I., 29 Sept. 1805, daughter of Dr. John Waterman and Susan Green (Cooke) . He was descended from Stukeley Westcott, who came from Devon Co., England, and settled at Salem.

He prepared at Greenwich Academy, Greenwich, R. I., for Brown University and graduated 1853. For about a year he was engaged in civil engineering, surveying for steam railroads in western Pennsylvania. Then taught school for two years at Cincinnati, Ohio, before entering Harvard Divinity School, where he graduated 1859. He was settled over the Unitarian churches of Barre, 1860-65, West Dedham, 1865-67, Lexington, 1867-81, and Melrose, 1881-83. While at Melrose he also was the minister at Maiden. He was a conscientious pastor, and interested in all movements for the general welfare of the town.

He married at Cambridge, 10 June 1863, Sarah Atkins Read, born at Cambridge 24 Feb. 1838, died at Cambridge 30 June 1905, daughter of William and Sarah Goodwin (Atkins).

George Byron^ Wheaton (Albert Fitz,^ Byron !) was born at Boston 31 July 1848, eldest son of Albert Fitz, born at Pomfret, Conn., 4 Aug. 1824, and grandson of Byron and Sarah (Turtelot). Bradley Child^ Whitcher (Miranda,^ Levi,^ Sargent,^ Richard,^ Reuben,^ Nathaniel,^ Thomas^) was born at Bath, N. H., 5 Sept. 1834, died 29 May 1909, son of Miranda and Rosanna (Child). The ancestor, Thomas Witcher or Whittier, settled at Salisbury.

He came to Lexington in 1868 and bought the grocery store of L. A. Saville which he sold back to Mr. Saville six years later. In June 1877 he established the grain and feed business with which he was connected for twenty-five years. He was a charter member and trustee of the Lexington Savings Bank; its president from 1892- 1904, when he resigned to become treasurer. He was a man of sterling character, a Freemason, and selectman 1872-75, '80-83.

Thomas^ Whitcomb (Asa,* John,' Jonathan, ^ JohnO was born at Lancaster 1774, died at Lexington 3 Mar. 1829, g. s., son of Asa and Betty (Sawyer). Asa Whitcomb was a prominent citizen of Lancaster and a colonel in the Revolution. Thomas was a physician and settled at Lexington about 1804 on what is now known as Vine Brook Farm. He is said to have been a capable physician and had a good practice. He was a member of the Mass. Medical Society.

He married 7 June 1810 Mrs. Hannah (Bridge) Chandler, born 30 Apr. 1771, died 1 Feb. 1843,* daughter of John^ and Hannah (Reed) Bridge and widow of Joseph^ Chandler.

i. Elizabeth Bridge,^ b.^lS Jan. 1814; m. 25 Oct. 1849 Nathaniel Harris Gerby, d. 5 Jan. 1869, aged 53 y. 11 m., s. of Nathaniel of Salem and Nancy Robinson (Berry) ; d. 7 Mar. 1883. Mr. Gerry was a man of marked ability, a printer and newspaper correspondent. Mrs. Gerry was descended from some of the leading families of Lexington and had inherited considerable property. In her later years, apparently she was reduced to poverty and was cared for in a large measure by neighbors and friends. After her death it was found that she had left over two thousand dollars, which for lack of direct heirs, and by an act of the Legislature of 1885, was added to the Bridge Charitable Fund.

1. Daniel^ White, whose name was on the tax list of Cambridge Farms as early as 1696, married first Mary ( ) ; secondly 13 June 1727 Mrs. Hannah (Morse) Wellington, born 3 Sept. 1682, daughter of Jonathan and Abigail (Shattuck) Morse of Watertown and widow of John Wellington.

He held the office of constable 1713 and 1714, and in his will dated 1738 mentioned the last named wife, Hannah, and four sons, Joseph, John, Stephen and Samuel, and two daughters, Sybil Mansfield and Sarah Locke.

2. John'^ White (Daniel), born 16 Feb. 1699, was a corporal of the King's troops in active service in 1725, and later served in the French War, 1757-60.

He married first Hannah Wellington,! died 7 Apr. 1731, daughter of John of Weston; secondly 1 Jan. 1735 Mrs. Mary (Whitmore) WEBER,t bom at Medford 17 July 1707, died 20 Oct. 1782, daughter of John^ and Mary (Lane) Whitmore§ and widow of Jonathan Weber.

4. Ebenezer^ White (Joseph,^ DanieP), born 10 July 1746, died 3 Oct. 1777. He was a member of Capt. Parker's company 1775, and held the position of first sergeant, later lieutenant. He was also in the Continental line in the Revolutionary War.

Richard Fox^ White (Edward^ was born at Boston 1830, died at Medford 16 Nov. 1887, son of Edward and Mary Maria (Fox). He moved from Lexington to Waltham in 1876, and later to Medford.

He enlisted 14 July 1861 in Company H, 16th Mass. Infantry, transferred to Company F, 11th Mass., and discharged 7 June 1865, by reason of expiration of service.

He married 29 Jan. 1856 Sarah Louise Brooks, born at Lincoln 24 July 1833, died at Medford 16 July 1902, daughter of Increase and Hannah (Flint).

Robert Higgins^ White (John^) was born in Nova Scotia 27 July 1856, youngest son of John, born 13 July 1817, and Abigail (Higgins), born 9 Feb. 1817. He came to the United States in 1877 and settled first at Concord; moving to Lexington in 1883.

Whiting

George Oliver^ Whiting (David,^ Oliver^) was born at Wilton, N. H., 20 Mar. 1841, younger son of David, born at Wilton, N. H., 26 Aug. 1810, and grandson of Oliver and Fanny (Stiles). His mother, Emma Spaulding, was born at Wilton, N. H., 13 July 1813, daughter of Isaac and Mary (Flynn). He was descended from Rev. Samuel Whiting, from Boston, Lincolnshire, England, who settled at Saugus, which was later divided and the new part called Lynn in Mr. Whiting's honor.

He represented Wilton in the General Court of N. H. 1867-68. He became a resident of Lexington in 1874. He is past president of the Lexington Historical Society, and president of the Wilton Railroad, C. Brigham Milk Co., Elm Farm Milk Co., and the Lexington Savings Bank.

Thomas Gould^ Whiting (Frank,^ William H.^) was born at Lexington 7 Apr. 1869, son of Frank, born at Charlestown 29 Aug. 1837, died 7 Mar. 1878, and grandson of William Henry and Jane Maria (Whipple). His mother, Lucy Maria Rust Gould, was born at Boston 14 Sept. 1843, daughter of Thomas,^ Jr., and Lydia Ann Winship (Teel). He was descended from Rev. Samuel Whiting.

He married at Arlington, 29 June 1892, Edith Otis Teel, born at Arlington 23 Mar. 1864, daughter of William Frederic and Melissa Arabella (Otis), born in Canada 16 Aug. 1838, died 21 Nov. 1904.

Jason« Whitman (John,^ John," Nicholas,' Thomas," John^ was born at East Bridgewater 13 Apr. 1799, died at Portland, Me., 25 Jan. 1848, son of John and Abigail (Whitman). The ancestor, John Whitman, was an early settler of Weymouth.

He graduated from Harvard 1825, read theology, and settled in 1830 at Saco, Me. He was appointed general agent of the American Unitarian Association 1834; was settled subsequently at Portland, Me., and installed 30 July 1845 over the church at Lexington. He served on the school committee 1846-47.

enlisted in the navy and served in the blockading squadron ofiF Charleston and Wilmington, and was discharged for disability. Reenlisted ^ 18 June 1864, serving on the vessels O. H. Lee, Mahaska, Spray,

Pampero, and Unadillo which made a long cruise, ending at Hongkong 2 July 1868, when he was honorably discharged. v. Martha Fairfield, b. 13 July 1840; d. 12 Dec. 1884. She studied medicine.

Though the name of Whitmore has never been common in Lexington, yet it is found on the earhest records. It is first mentioned in connection with the boundary of the parish when it was incorporated in 1693, the Great and General Court having described the dividing line between the old town of Cambridge and the North Parish as follows, - "Beginning at the first run of water or swampy place, over which is a kind of a bridge in the way or road, on the southerly side of Francis Whitmore's house, towards the town of Cambridge." The same description was used when the precinct was erected into a town in 1713, and the above line remains still the boundary between Lexington and Arlington.

Francis Whitmore, however, did not reside in this house at the date of the incorporation of the town, as he had then been dead for several years. It is believed also that he never lived there, although he owned the house, which was probably occupied then or later by his son Samuel. He was a signer of the petition "to be set off as a distinct parish" in October 1682.

1. Francis^ Whitmore died at Cambridge 12 Oct. 1685, aged 62. He was a large landowner in that and neighboring towns. He served in the Indian War under Major Willard as the treasurer's books show.

He married first Isabel Parke, died 31 Mar. 1665, daughter of Richard; secondly Margaret Harty, died 1 Mar. 1686. Children by the first wife, all born at Cambridge: d. atMenotomy 13 Nov. 1751, aged 90, dau. of John and Mary (Scullard) Rolfe and widow of William^ Cutter of Menotomy; d. at Medford 22 Feb. 1739. He had three children.

He was a subscriber towards the meeting-house 1692, one of a committee for making taxes in 1693, assessor 1700 and 1708, and tythingman 1712; a charter member of the church in 1696, and his wife Rebecca was admitted to the church 16 Jan. 1700.

3. Thomas^ Whitmore (Francis 0 born 1673. It is not known how long he resided at Lexington. In 1696 Hugh Day of Cambridge Farms sold land there to Thomas W^hitmore of Watertown, and the purchase included a house and twenty acres. Two years after, in 1698, Thomas Whitmore of Cambridge Farms sold the same land to Josiah Whitney, and in 1707 seven acres were given him by the proprietors of Billerica, He joined the church at Killingly, Conn.,

He married Mary Waters, born 19 Oct. 1675, daughter of Samuel and Mary (Hudson) of Woburn. She was admitted to the church in Lexington 10 Apr. 1709.

4. Joseph^ Whitmore (Francis^), born 1675; married 13 Feb. 1699 Mary Kendall, daughter of Thomas; they were admitted to the church 9 May 1703, and both were dismissed to the church at Woburn 20 Feb. 1704. Administration granted to the widow Mary 6 June 1720.

ii. Daniel, b. 15 Feb., bapt. 21 Feb. 1725; m. 1746 Elizabeth Townsend. They moved to Boston, and in 1748 executed a deed of their Lexington land to Jonathan Robinson.

Charles Octavius'' Whitmore (William D.,^ John,^ Francis,* John,3 John,2 Francis^) was born at Bath, Me., 2 Nov. 1807, died at Boston 15 Nov. 1885, son of William Dickman and Rhoda (Woodward). In 1852 he purchased a summer residence at Lexington.

He married 22 Dec. 1830 Lovice Ayres, born at Provincetown 3 Aug. 1805, died at Boston 27 Sept. 1849, daughter of John and Rebecca (Lombard); secondly 30 Oct. 1851 Mrs. Mary E. (Tarbell) Blake, born at Cambridge 17 Aug. 1809, died at Boston 23 Mar. 1898, daughter of John and Amelia (Parker) Tarbell and widow of George Blake, Jr.

Arthur Cephas^ Whitney* (John S.,^ JohnO was born at Boxboro 21 Sept. 1854, son of John Sherman Hoar, born at Boxboro 19 June 1828, and grandson of John and Betsey (Barker) Hoar. His mother, Lydia Parker Whitney, was born at Lancaster 29 Dec. 1827, daughter of Simeon and Nancy (Barnard). He is a Free Mason and a trustee of the Lexington Savings Bank.

Charles Alexander^ Whittemore (Benjamin, ^ Thomas^ was born at Cambridge 24 Jan. 1864, third son of Benjamin, born 8 June 1838, and grandson of Thomas and Lovice (Corbett). His mother, Martha Ellen Dickinson, born 30 Apr. 1840, daughter of Alexander and Hope (Kemp). The ancestor, Thomas Whittemore, who came from England, settled at Charlestown.

He married at Cambridge, 11 Dec. 1888, Evelyn Cutting BuLLARD, born at Cambridge 16 Jan. 1866, daughter of John Cutting and Martha Maria (Hobbs).

He lived on the Concord road near the line of that town and was a neighbor of Thomas Nelson. He was famous as an almanac maker, publishing almanacs about 1707, was well educated for that day, and pursued also the occupation of a surveyor. Besides this he sold drugs, and hence received the name of doctor. He was assessor 1718 and constable 1720.

He married first Sarah French, born 29 Dec. 1698, died 15 Oct. 1734, daughter of William and Sarah (Danforth) of Billerica. They joined the church at Lexington 24 Apr. 1720. He married secondly Abigail ( ).

John Howard' Willard (Elisha W.,^ Henry^) was born at Chicago, 111., 2 May 1855, younger son of Elisha Wheeler, born at Washington, N. H., 22 May 1810, and grandson of Henry and Lovey (Adams). His mother,"' Mary Eleanor Estabrooks, was born 26 Sept. 1815, daughter of John and Eliza (Howard). He is descended from Major Simon Willard, who came from England and was one of the chief founders of Concord.

He married at BurUngton, 24 Mar. 1880, Ida Lillian Haven (by adoption Hutchinson), born at Burlington 25 July 1859, daughter of Timothy and Laura Ann (Tebetts). They became residents of Lexington in 1880.

Joseph Henry^ Willard was born at Chicago, 111. He married Ella Quin, born in Mississippi. Child, born at Lexington: i. Roberta," b. 17 July 1891.

His father. Rev. Henry Williams, was settled in the ministry at Guildford, Vt., and at Leverett, Mass., and at the latter place his son Avery's childhood and youth were passed. Avery Williams was graduated at Dartmouth in 1804, studied theology at Princeton, N. J., settled at Lexington, 30 Dec. 1807, over the First Church and because of ill health left Lexington in 1815, and went South.

He married at Bradford, Me., 4 Feb. 1861, Mary Eva Trefe- THAN, born at Exeter, Me., Aug. 1837, died 16 June 1901, daughter of Henry and Mary (Marsh).

He married 18 Jan. 1888 Minnie Campbell Thayer, born at Brooklyn, N. Y., 15 Dec. 1865, died at Needham 26 Nov. 1906, daughter of Samuel G.^ and Frances (Mclntyre).

Royal Barlow^ Willis (Thomas,^ Thomas,^ Thomas,* Thomas,^ Benjamin,^ John^) was born at Easton 3 Sept. 1812, died 8 Nov. 1893, eldest son of Thomas and Frances (Willis). The ancestor, John, was of Duxbury and Bridgewater.

He began his business career at Boston in 1834, was a representative from Boston in 1844 and '45, and moved to Lexington in 1846. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1848. Later he was engaged in the furniture business at Cincinnati, Ohio, but retained his family residence at Lexington.

Archibald^ Wilson (Archibald^) was born at Cardigan, P. E. I., 4 Oct. 1877, elder son of Archibald and Annie (McKenzie) . He came to Lexington about 1893.

He married Alice Maud Yeo, born at Richmond, P. E. I., 23 Apr. 1879, daughter of Frederick and Catherine (Henry). Children, all born at Lexington:

He appears to have become a resident of Cambridge Farms as early as 1693, when he was taxed for the purchase of the ministerial land. He was an assessor in 1703, and constable in 1713. He and his wife Deborah were admitted to the Lexington church 6 Feb. 1699. Hudson says that James Wilson from Lexington settled at Leicester in 1721. Washburn's History of Leicester says that James Wilson from Lexington was at Leicester in 1714, and that his wife's name was Mehitable, but it is more probable that Mehitable was the wife of his son James. No one of the name of Wilson appears on the earliest tax lists extant in 1868, viz., 1729 and 1735. He moved to Killingly, Conn., where he and his wife were admitted to the church 27 Dec. 1715; he was living there in 1726, when he conveyed land in Leicester to his son James, Jr.

He married at Woburn, 19 Jan. 1687, Deborah Pierce, born 30 Oct. 1666, daughter of Ensign John and Deborah (Converse) of Woburn, who died before 26 Apr. 1716, the date of the will of her father Ensign John Pierce, who left a legacy to the children of his daughter Deborah W^ilson, deceased.

John Mills^ Wilson (William H.,^ William^ was born at Glasgow, Scotland, 16 May 1864, son of William Henry, born at Hamilton, Scotland, 12 June 1825, and grandson of William and Marion (Summers). His mother, Ann Mills, was born at Kilmarnock, Scotland, 21 July 1826, daughter of John and Helen (Goodwin).

He was educated in the public schools of Boston, at Phillips Academy, Andover, was graduated from Harvard, A.B., 1890, and spent one year at Harvard Divinity School. He was ordained at Hudson Jan. 1891, called to Fall River in 1897 and installed over the First Church at Lexington 10 May 1905.

He married at Arlington Margaret Sarah Murphy, born 5 July 1866, daughter of William^ and Bridget (O'Donald). Children, iv. born at Newton, the others at Lexington :

Leander Joseph' Wing (Hiram,^ James^ was born at Rochester, Vt., 30 Oct. 1833, son of Hiram, born at Hardwick 22 Mar. 1800, and grandson of James and Hannah (Wetherbee) . His mother, Myra Morse, was born at Goffstown, N. H., 22 Feb. 1803, daughter of Joseph and Abigail (Parker). The ancestor, John Wing, came from Banbury, England, and was at Saugus for five years and then settled at Yarmouth.

1. Edward^ Winship, presumably from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, was born 13 Mar. 1612, died 2 Dec. 1688, g. s. at Cambridge. He sailed from Harwich, England, in the ship Defiance Aug. 1635, and settled at Cambridge.

He was made freeman in 1635, was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, 1638; a selectman of Cambridge for several years between 1637 and 1684; representative in the General

Edward Winship was a large landholder, not only at Old Cambridge, but also at the Farms, where he had land assigned to him as early as 1642. In his will, dated 1685, he mentioned sons Ephraim, Edward, Samuel and Joseph, and daughters Mary, Elizabeth and Abigail. As seen by his will his land within the present limits of Lexington extended from Lowell St. across the brook there to the hill west of Mass. Ave., upon the present line of Arlington, and including the mill site. Mount Ephraim, and a part of the Great Meadow.

He was lieutenant of the Cambridge military company, and in 1662 released from all ordinary training so long as "he hath three training soldiers in his family and himself in commission."

He married first Jane Wilkinson, died between 1648 and '51, daughter of Widow Isabella Wilkinson, from Newcastle-upon- Tyne, England, and cousin of William and Richard Cutter; secondly 165 (?) Elizabeth Parke* (died 19 Sept. 1690, aged 57, g. s. at Cambridge), presumably one of the two daughters of Richard Parke, the name of the other daughter being Isabel, the wife of Francis Whitmore, the name of Isabel suggesting a possible connection with the family of his first wife Jane, the daughter of Widow Isabella Wilkinson, who owned certain lands in common with her son-inlaw Edward Winship, with whose family she probably resided.

Pierce. Mr. Winship lived in the easterly part of the town, and the eminence near his place is still called "Mount Ephraim"; subscribed to the building of the first meeting-house in 169£; was an assessor in 1693 and '94; a member of the committee chosen to treat with the town of Cambridge in relation to the purchase of land for the ministry; and an ensign of mihtia. iv. Joanna, b. 1 Aug. 1645; d. unm. 19 Nov. 1707. She was famous in her day as a school teacher. The following lines are on her gravestone:

He owned land at Cambridge Farms, but his residence was on the Cambridge side of the line. He was selectman at Cambridge 1691- 93, '95-1701. His will, proved in 1718, and an instrument, signed by his heirs, make it evident he had seven living children at the time he died. He gave to his son Edward "the houfe he dwelleth in, and fifty fix acres of land adjoining thir unto butted and bounded as followeth . viz. beginning at a fmall birch Tree with a heap of ftones being the foutheaft corner ftanding near the Town Road leading from Old M' Mun Roes towards Menotomy . being marked with my own hands in the Prefents of Deacon Whitmore . & brother Joseph fharmon." He gave to his son Ephraim "all that ycell of land whereon he dwells and the interest I have in the houfe he now dwells in, which was formerly my brother Ephraim's, lying on the fouth weft fide of the country road."

He married 14 May 1683 Rebecca Barsham, born 12 Dec. 1657, died Aug. 1717, g. s. at Cambridge, daughter of William and Annabella ( ) of Watertown, ii. Elizabeth, b. 1 June 1686; m. 3 Apr. 1706, as his second wife, Walter* Russell. - All of the above children were baptized at the Church of Chriat at Cambridge before 1658.

vii. Jason, bapt. 29 Oct. 1699; m. Mrs. Hannah (Wteth) Prentice, d. 12 Dec. 1756, aged 63, dau. of John Wyeth and widow of Nathaniel Prentice; drowned in Menotomy Pond 26 Dec. 1762, aged 62; going from a neighbor's it was supposed that he missed his way, and "got into the pond where he was drowned." Family at Arlington. His son Jason Winship and son-in-law Jabez Wyman were killed by the British at Menotomy 19 April 1775, and Jason Winship himself was a private soldier in the French War. Hist. Arlington, p. 326.

3. Samuel^ Winship (E4wardO, born 24 Oct. 1658, died 8 June 1696. He resided in the precinct, was a subscriber to the meetinghouse 1692, and for the purchase of the Common 1711, was among those who were taxed from the beginning, selectman in 1728, '29, '30-33, and an assessor 1733.

He married 12 Apr. 1687 Mary Poulter, born at Billerica 9 Apr. 1665, died 2 Oct. 1745, g. s. at Cambridge, daughter of John^ and Rachel (Eliot); she married secondly 14 Apr. 1701 Isaac Powers of Concord.

4. Joseph^ Winship (Edward^, born at Cambridge 21 June 1661, died at Charlestown 18 Sept. 1725, g. s. at Cambridge.* He resided at Menotomy.

He married first 24 Nov. 1687 Sarah Harrington, born 10 May 1671, died 28 Nov. 1710, g. s. at Cambridge, daughter of Robert^ and Susanna (George); secondly 27 Oct. 1714 Sarah Stearns, born 23 Apr. 1671, died Sept. 1726, daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Manning).

6. Ephraim^ Winship (Edward,^ Edward^, born 4 Feb. 1687- 88, died 14 July 1757. He subscribed toward the Common 1711, was surveyor of highways and tythingman 1721, constable 1728.

He married 17 June 1708 Hannah Cutter, born 20 May 1688, died 9 Apr. 1764, daughter of WiUiam^ and Rebecca (Rolfe). She was employed by the town to keep school 21 July 1717; they were admitted to the church 12 Oct. 1718.

7. Nathaniel* Winship (Edward,^ Edward^), born 16 Feb. 1689-90, resided at Menotomy, died 1721. His widow Rebecca administered his estate 6 Mar. 1721-22.

He married 11 Feb. 1713 Rebecca Pierce of Woburn, born 16 Sept. 1692, daughter of James and Elizabeth (Parker) ; she married secondly 6 June 1728 John Manning of Cambridge, and died his widow at Cambridge 1775.*

Wright of Woburn and Lancaster. V. Abigail, bapt. 25 Mar. 1722; d. July 1722. 8. John3 Winship (Edward,2 EdwardO, died 7 Nov. 1759. He resided at Menotomy and ^as one of the first two deacons of that church, selectman and parish officer. His death and that of his wife and son Noah occurred so near together, that Rev. Samuel Cooke of Menotomy preached a sermon on that occasion. f

He married first 10 Jan. 1711-12 Jane Fessenden, born 22 Apr. 1688, died 2 May 1758, g. s., daughter of Nicholas^ and Margaret (Cheney); secondly 24 Dec. 1761 Mrs. Ltdia (Bowman-Simonds) Cutler, daughter of Francis^ and Lydia (Stone) Bowman and widow of Thomas^ Cutler; she died his widow, buried 18 Apr. 1790.

12. Jonathan^ Winship (Edward,^ Edward, ^ Edward^), born 28 May 1719, died 3 Oct. 1784. He was admitted to the church by letter from Cambridge Second Precinct Church 21 May 1754 and his wife was admitted 18 June 1758. After 1765 he moved to Brighton. Was selectman at Mason, N. H., 1772-73.t He established the Brighton Market.^

He married first 6 Oct. 1741 Isabel Cutter of Cambridge, baptized 25 Jan. 1719-20, died 9 June 1742, daughter of Gershom and Mehitable (Abbott) ; secondly 16 Mar. 1746 Elizabeth Read, born 28 Feb. 1726, died 7 Jan. 1796, daughter of Joshua and Elizabeth (Russell).

He was in the French War 1755, and his son Isaac administered upon his estate. Isaac (either this one or his son) had a seat in the Menotomy meeting-house 1781.

He resided at Lexington probably in the easterly section of the town, and worshipped a part of the time with the Menotomy congregation. He joined the Lexington church 4 Apr. 1736. He moved to New Marblehead, now Windham, Me., about 1740, to which place he was dismissed from the Lexington church 30 May 1762. This place suffered severely from the Indians from 1747 to 1763, and he was attacked and scalped by them, but not mortally wounded, on 14 May 1756.t At this date he was a widower, with a family of " six " children.

He married first 28 Aug. 1735 Mehitable Cutter, born 9 Oct. 1709, died at Windham, Me., before 14 May 1756, daughter of Gershom and Mehitable (Abbott). He married a second time and had five more children who survived him.

V. Rebecca, b. 11 June 1744;* m. 9 Nov. 1762 John Edgell of Westminster, Mass., b. at Westminster, Vt., s. of William and Elizabeth (Norman).

He was constable in 1750 and tythingman 1758. His will dated 28 Nov. 1768, and proved 7 Jan. 1769, mentioned eight children, then living, viz., Abigail, Ephraim, Hannah, Grace, Rebecca, Richard, Prudence and Nehemiah, and Nehemiah Estabrook administered the widow's estate.

He married first 22 May 1735 Hannah Loring, died 27 July 1747, daughter of Joseph^ and Lydia (Fiske) ; secondly at Billerica, 5 May 1748, Abigail Crosby of Billerica, born 5 June 1717, died 12 Jan. 1771, daughter of Lieut. 17. Thomas^ Winship (Edward,^ Edward,^ Edward,^ EdwardO» born 25 Oct. 1729, died 4 Aug, 1796. He was a member of Capt. Parker's company 19 April 1775, and was wounded in the battle of that day. He went on the expedition to New York in 1775, and to Bennington in 1777, was selectman 1779-81, and an assessor 1782-87. He had a seat in Menotomy (Arlington) meeting-house, 1781.

He married first 4 September 1753 Sarah Godding, died 24 Mar. 1754, aged 20 (Arl. rec) ; secondly 28 May. 1755 Sarah Harrington, born 17 Sept. 1735, daughter of Henry* and Sarah (Laughton).

He married 9 Feb. 1757 Hephzibah Laughton, daughter of Dea. John^ and Sarah ( ), then of Lexington, later of Harvard; she married secondly 29 Feb. 1776 Jonathan Davis, they being termed "residents."! 20. IsAAC^ WiNSHip (Isaac,* Edward,^ Edward,^ Edward^, born 7 Apr. 1749, died 29 Nov. 1834. He returned from Medford to Lexington about 1783, and was taxed here in 1785. He administered upon his father's estate, and was an assessor 1793 to 1814, inclusive.

He married 4 Mar. 1773, he as of Medford, Sarah Fessenden, born 1753, died 2 May 1834, daughter of Thomas' and Hannah (Prentice). Children :

He married at Billerica, 21 May 1776, Joanna Abbott of Billerica, born 24 July 1755, daughter of Oliver and Joanna (French), and both owned the covenant at Lexington 20 July 1777. His widow died 2 Feb. 1826 at the house of Stephen Robbins, Jr., the husband of Simon Winship's sister Abigail. t Children, both born at Lexington: t A plan of a part of Mr. Simon Winship's farm at Lexington, drawn from a scale of 10 rods to an inch, by Peter Tufts, Jr., of Charlestown, 23 Sept. 1812, shows several pieces of land, aggregating 17 acres and a fraction (17 a. 1 qr. 35 poles or rods), besides the mansion house, and a small private cemetery. This property has been for many years in the family of Stephen Robbins. The estate is bounded on the south by the "road from Charlestown to Concord through Lexington."

22. JoHN^ WiNSHiP (Samuel/ Samuel,^ Samuel,^ Edward^. born 12 May 1754, died at West Cambridge 9 Oct. 1822, g. s. at Arlington. He was a member of Capt. Parker's company in 1775, and also served in the campaigns of eight and twelve months to New York.

1. John^ Winter, tanner, a proprietor of Watertown 1636-37, died at Watertown 14 or 21 Apr. 1662, aged about 90. His will dated 4 Mar. 1661-62, proved 16 June 1662, named sons Richard and Thomas, late of London, daughter Alice Lackman of London, son John of Watertown, executor, to whom he gave his lands, etc., at Watertown.

2. John^ Winter (John^), died at Cambridge Farms 18 Dec. 1690. He probably came from Cambridge to the Farms where he had land assigned him between the eight-mile line and Concord in 1683. His will, dated 12 Dec. 1690, probated 1 May 1691, made no mention of his wife, who probably had died before him; named sons John, Thomas and Samuel, and daughters Sarah, Hannah and Mary.

3. JoHN^ Winter (John,^ John^, born 17 Sept. 1667; owned the covenant at Watertown 20 June 1690; wife Abigail ( ) was admitted to the church at Lexington 9 Apr. 1699. He may have been previously married before his marriage to his wife Abigail. He subscribed toward the meeting-house in 1692.

Charles Henry^ Wiswell (Charles^) was born at Little Falls, N. Y., 30 Aug. 1852, son of Charles and Catherine Elizabeth (Stockbiirger). The ancestor, Thomas Wiswell, came from England in 1635 and settled at Dorchester.

Henry Arthur Clay^ Woodward (Elisha G.,^ Elisha^) was bom at Somerville 19 Apr. 1852, younger son of Elisha Gilman and Melinda Helen (Smith). He became a resident of Lexington about 1886. He served as a selectman 1905-12.

Sanford Halbert^ Woodworth (Moseley^) was born at Essex, Vt., 20 Aug. 1851, son of Moseley, born at Essex, Vt., 6 Apr. 1819, and Evaline (Bishop), born at Hinesburg,Vt., 16 July 1818, daughter of Ephraim and Lucy (Hudley). He became a resident of Lexington in August 1878.

He married 2 Apr. 1884 Marion Elizabeth Simonds, born 24 Dec. 1864, daughter of George^ and Mary EUzabeth (Bannon). Children, both bom at Lexington:

Captain John^ Wooton died at Lexington 5 Apr. 1769 (buried 4 Apr. 1769, record of Rev. Samuel Cooke, West Cambridge). He was a sea captain, and made twenty-two voyages to Surinam, Dutch Guiana.

George Edwin' Worthen (True F.,^ LewisO was born at Charlestown 6 Jan. 1845, second son of True French, born at Candia, N. H., 7 Nov. 1821, and grandson of Lewis and Hannah (Buzzell). His mother, Laura Ann Worthen, was born at Charlestown 13 Feb. 1822, daughter of Louis and Achsahf (Hill).

He married at Charlestown, 28 Nov. 1870, Jeannette Robinson BuRROUGH, born at Chelsea 3 Dec. 1846, daughter of Arnold. Her mother, Eleanor Jameson Burnham, was born at Durham, Me., 10 May 1814, died 11 May 1905, daughter of Josiah and Eleanor (Jameson). They became residents of Lexington 1 Sept. 1880.

LoRA Belle Heal, b. at Lincolnville Centre, Me. 28 Feb. 1882, dau. of Amasa Stetson and Lula Isabel (Parker). He is treasurer of the Lexington Savings Bank and one of its trustees. iv. Eleanor Jameson, b. 16 July 1885.

1. Elisha Hall^ Wright (Nathan W.J Jacob,^ Jacob,^ Jacob,* John,3 John,2 JohnO was born at Walpole, N. H., 26 Nov. 1811, died 4 Aug. 1876, son of Nathan W. and Betsey (Lowell*), and grandson of Jacob and Patty (Reed). The ancestor, John Wright, was an early settler of Woburn.

He married 30 Dec. 1836 Harriet Farmer, born at Greenfield, N. H., 22 Feb. 1814, died 25 J^uly 1884, daughter of Oliver and Lucy (Moore). They became residents of Lexington in 1857.

ii, Willis Laws, b. 14 Sept. 1841; m. Apr. 1870 Abbie M. Barnes. Resided at Waltham. He enlisted 26 Sept. 1862 in Co. D, 45th Mass. Inf'y. discharged 7 July 1863 by reason of expiration of service.

iv. Harriet Adella, b. 9 June 1850; m. 15 Nov. 1875 George Henbt Howe, b. at Cambridge, s. of Noah and Deborah J. (Osgood). They reside in Texas.

John Hay^ Wright (John H.,'^ John H.O was born at Stoneham 10 Apr. 1858, son of John Hay, borti at Stoneham and grandson of John Hay. His mother, Mary Mehssa Greenwood, was born at Ipswich.

He married at Reading, 5 Apr. 1877, Alice Mary Richardson, born at Stoneham 11 Sept. 1860, daughter of Albert and Abigail Tay (Richardson). They became residents of Lexington 28 Nov. 1886.

1. James^Wyman (Benjamin,^ Benjamin,^ Francis^)* was born at Woburn 18 June 1741, died 13 Nov. 1822, son of Benjamin and Esther (Richardson).

He was in Capt. Parker's company 1775-76, and went on the expedition to White Plains in Sept. 1776. He held the office of assessor at Lexington in 1781.

He married first 14 Jan. 1766 Anna Porter of Woburn, baptized 26 Dec. 1742, daughter of William and Lydia (Batchelder) ; secondly Lydia Simonds, died 22 Feb. 1840, aged 83,* daughter of John^ and Mary (Tufts).

He married at Cambridge, 20 Jan. 1702, Elizabeth Hancock of Cambridge, born 1 May 1686, died 2 Mar. 1749, daughter of NathanieP and Mary (Prentice) Hancock, and sister of Rev. John Hancock. They owned the covenant 24 June 1705. His widow married secondly 22 Aug. 1739 Jonathan Bacon of Bedford. Children, all born at Lexington:

August^ Young (Benjamin^) was born at Breslau, Germany, 18 Dec. 1862, son of Benjamin and Louise (Sonlane). He left Germany when seventeen and came to Lexington in Nov. 1892.

Owen D.^ Young (Jacob S.,^ PeterO was born at Stark, village of Van Hornerville, N. Y., 27 Oct. 1874, younger son of Jacob Smith, born at Stark, N. Y., 10 Dec. 1831, and grandson of Peter and Magdalene (Smith). His mother, Ida Brandow, was born at Springfield, N. Y,, 10 Mar. 1839, daughter of John Worden and Catherine (Connine). Peter Young came from Germany and settled at Green Co., N. Y.

He received the degree of Ph.B. at St. Lawrence University, N. Y., and LL.B., Boston University Law School. He is a lawyer, and became a resident of Lexington 6 July 1905.

He married at Southbridge, 30 June 1898, Josephine Sheldon Edmonds, born at Southbridge 21 Apr. 1870, daughter of Charles Sidney and Altha Josephine (Hobbs). Graduated from Radcliffe, A.B., 1896.
