Francis Brown^ Hayes (William A.,^ David^ was born at South Berwick, Me., 12 Oct. 1819, died 20 Sept. 1884, son of William Allen, born at North Yarmouth, Me., 20 Oct. 1783 and grandson of David and Dorcas (Allen). His mother, Susannah Lord, was born at South Berwick, Me., 19 May 1790, daughter of Gen. John and Mehetable (Perkins). The ancestor, John Hayes, said to have come from Scotland, 1680, settled at Dover, N. H.

Mr. Hayes purchased the property, now numbered 45 Hancock St., of Mr. Blake 29 Nov. 1861, and made Lexington his summer home thereafter. Later he acquired various lots of land on Granny Hill until he owned nearly four hundred acres. On this great estate, beautifully diversified, including the highest point of land in town, with a small natural pond near the top of Granny Hill, he cultivated a great variety of rare flowers, shrubs and trees, many of which were imported from foreign lands, and among them orchids, camellias and rhododendrons were conspicuous.

Mr. Hayes's family on Christmas Day 1884. Mr. Hayes was elected State Senator in the fall of 1873 and was candidate for Congressman in 1880.

Hayes, .Jr., bequeathed $10,000 to the town of Lexington for the construction of a memorial fountain on Lexington Green. On account of the inadequate supply of town water at that time the plan of the present drinking fountain surmounted by the statue of a minuteman was adopted and unveiled 19 Apr. 1900, Henry H. Kitson, sculptor.

Samuel Wallace' Hendley (Samuel,^ Charles^) was born at Carlisle 22 Dec, 1823, died 7 Apr. 1898, second son of Samuel, born 3 July 1792, and grandson of Charles. His mother, Almira Brown, was born 23 Nov. 1801, daughter of Samuel and Betsey (Tuttle). The ancestor, Charles Hendley, was a deserter from the British army in the Revolutionary War who enlisted in the American service. The Hendleys were of Scotch descent.

1. JoHN^ Hewes, died 15 Dec. 1721, aged 68, g. s. He was at Cambridge Farms when the precinct was organized in 1693 and was taxed later as a resident. He was assessor in 1705.

Willard Converse' Hill (William P.,^ Converse^) was born at Melrose 7 June 1868, elder son of William Pompey, born at Boston 5 Feb. 1845, and grandson of Converse and Dorothea Washington (Garners). His mother, Sarah Abigail Preble, was born at Boston 12 Jan. 1848, daughter of Nathaniel Coit Allen and Sarah Bartlett (Eveleth). His ancestor, John Hill, came from England and settled at Dorchester.

JoHN^ Hoar (Lieut. Daniel/ Daniel,^ John,^ Charles^) was born at Concord 6 Jan. 1707, died at Lincoln 16 May 1786, son of Lieut. Daniel, born 1680, died at Concord 8 Feb. 1773, and grandson of Lieut. Daniel and Mary (Stratton). His mother was Sarah Jones, born 4 June 1686, daughter of John and Sarah (Farwell). He was descended from Charles Hoar, a sheriff of Gloucester, England, and Joanna (Hinkman). Mrs. Hoar came to this country with five of her children in 1642.

He lived successively in Lexington, Watertown, Lexington and Lincoln; this was partly on account of his changing his reisdence, and partly from alterations of town lines, which annexed a part of Lexington to Lincoln. When he became an inhabitant of Lexington is not knoAvn, but he was taxed in 1729 and had a seat assigned him in the meeting-house in 1731. He was chosen one of the committee to provide for schools in 1743, and also filled the office of constable, assessor and selectman.

1. JosiAH^ HoBBS, who came to this country in 1671 in the ship Arabella, and to Lexington after 1690, died 30 May 1741, aged 92. He was one of those who subscribed for the building of the meetinghouse in 1692, was taxed for the support of the minister 1693, and in August 1699 both he and his wife were admitted to the church.

2. JosiAH^ HoBBS§ (JosiahO (?) born at Boston, 1684; died at Weston 27 Feb. 1779, aged 95; lived at Lexington until about 1714, and then returned to Boston, and lived there many years, and later moved with his family to the town of Weston. In 1713 he was chosen in Lexington to "take care of ye swine." Children, both baptized at Lexington :

Hogan

Jeremiah Jerome^ Hogan (Jeremiah, ^ John^) was born in Kerry- Co., Ireland, 18 Apr. 1882, son of Jeremiah Francis, born in Kerry- Co., Ireland, 20 Aug. 1835, and grandson of John and Nellie (Teahen). His mother, Nora Moyarty, was born in Kerry Co., 17 July 1844, daughter of Dennis and Anny (Casey). He moved to Lexington in 1904.

1. Aaron^ Holbrook (Moses 0 was born at Templeton 18 Dec. 1788, died 1841, son of Moses and Rachel (Death). He died on his way home from the South, and was buried at sea about a quarter of a mile east of Key West lighthouse.

He married first Susan Miles; secondly Mary Wellington, born at Waltham 11 Feb. 1799, died 15 May 1860, daughter of William^ and Avis (Fiske).

He married first Anna Finch, born in Canada; secondly at Dorchester Julia Rebecca Wellington, born at Dorchester, died at Winchester 9 Mar. 1905, aged 68, daughter of William^ and Rebecca (Ames). He came to Lexington in 1840, was engaged in the milk and grocery business, and is a member of the N. E. Associated California Pioneers of 1849. He was selectman 1889-93.

He married at Saugus, 30 Apr. 1857, Sarah Ellen Stocker, born at Saugus 24 Jan. 1835, died 29 Aug. 1898, daughter of William and Polly (Raddin).

Holland

Dr. Howland'* Holmes* (Howland,^ Ellis,^ Elisha^) was born at Halifax 16 Jan. 1815, died at Arlington 16 Nov. 1893, eldest son of Howland, born at Plymouth 7 Dec. 1780, and grandson of Ellis and Content (Howland). His mother was Huldah Copeland, born at Bridgewater 19 May 1777, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca (Hooper), a descendant of John Alden. The ancestor, John Holmes, settled at Plymouth in 1632.

He attended the district schools of Bridgewater, Bridgewater Academy, Phillips Academy, Exeter, N. H., graduated from Harvard, A.B. 1843, A.M. 1846. He spent a year in Europe, attending a course of lectures at L'Ecole de Medecine at Paris, and 'also in study in the hospitals of Paris and London. He received his M.D. from Harvard, 1848, began practice at West Cambridge, 1849, moved to Lexington in 1851 and continued in practice until his death. He published several professional works of a purely technical character. He was a member of the Mass. Medical Society and the N. E. Hist. Gen. Soc. He was instrumental in founding a public library at Halifax which bears his name. He was justice of the peace for twenty-five years; town physician at West Cambridge and . Arlington for several years, apd member of the school committee both at Arlington and Lexington. He was an enthusiastic horticulturist.

He married at Albany, N. Y., 28 Aug. 1849, Sarah Maria Wellington CoTTiNG, born at Arlington 3 Mar. 1818, died 14 Nov. 1901, daughter of William and Sarah (Eddy). She was a student at the Ursuline Convent at Charlestown.

Samuel Edward William^ Holoway (Samuel,'^ Samuel^) was born at Bath, England, 5 Oct. 1850, eldest son of Samuel, born at Bath, England, 1 Sept. 1828, and grandson of Samuel and Jane (Williams). His mother, Fannie Matilda Fry, was born at Chippenham, England, 26 June 1830, daughter of Edward and Theresa (Whittaker). He is a gilder and became a resident of Lexington 5 Mar. 1872. Edmund Kingsland^ Houghton (Henry A.,^ Paul^ was born at Keeserville, N. Y., 24 May 1858, youngest son of Henry Arvin, born at Lyndonville, Vt., 25 Dec. 1827, and grandson of Paul and Eunice ( ). His mother, Sarah Dana Page, was born at St. Johnsbury, Vt., 6 Apr. 1836, daughter of William.

He married at St. Johnsbury, Vt., 24 June 1884, Flora Alice Brown, born at St. Johnsbury, Vt., 24 Apr. 1858, daughter of Oliver Taylor and Melinda (Bean). They became residents of Lexington in 1888.

Herbert Lincoln- Houghton (Marcellus^ was born at Bolton 7 Nov. 1861, son of Marcellus, born at Thomaston, Me., and Catherine C. (Fogg), born at Hallowell, Me.

He married at Beaver Lake, N. Y., 30 Aug. 1902, Agnes Sheppard Cowperthwaite, born at Great Barrington 7 Aug. 1875, daughter of Frank Herbert and Mary Eliza (Hogg). She received the degree of B.L. at Smith, 1898.

Samuel A.* Houghton (Levi,^ Levi,^ James^) was born at Lunenburg 4 Jan. 1807, died 19 Oct. 1882, son of Levi, born at Worcester 8 Mar. 1774, died 27 Jan. 1865, and grandson of Levi and Amy (Richardson). His mother was Elizabeth Stearns, of Lunenburg, died in 1828, aged 47.

He married 3 Sept. 1834 Martha Warren Haywood, of Townsend, died at Arlington 22 Dec. 1901, aged 91 y. 7 m. They moved to Lexington from Boston in 1839.

Thomas G.' Hovey (Ebenezer,^ Thomas,^ Ebenezer/ John,' Joseph,^ DanieP) was born at Brighton 23 Jan. 1816, died 20 Mar. 1880, son of Ebenezer, born 8 June 1769, died 5 May 1831, and grandson of Thomas and Elizabeth (Brown). His mother was Sally Greenwood, died 27 June 1863, daughter of Nathaniel of Brighton. He was descended from Daniel Hovey, who came to this country in 1637 and settled at Ipswich.

Howard

Horace Myrick^ Howard (Stephen, ^ Amasa^) was born at Shirley 19 Aug. 1860, only son of Stephen, born at Woodstock, Conn., 2 Sept. 1821, and grandson of Amasa and Lucy (Wheat). His mother was Mary Adeline Wright, born at Townsend, 27 Mar. 1839, daughter of Joseph Varnum and Lucy Leonora (Blood). He is a Free Mason and became a resident of Lexington 29 Aug. 1887.

Howe

Arthur Bryant^ Howe (George^) was born at Waltham 16 Dec. 1875, eldest son of George, born at Fairfield, Me., and grandson of William and Catherine (Willard). His mother, Harriet Elizabeth Tozier, was born at Waterville, Me., 30 June 1841, daughter of Bryant and Winnie Anne (Pushor).

He married at Somerville, 17 Oct. 1900, Marion Louise Gooding, born at Somerville 21 Jan. 1877, daughter of Henry Lansing and Mary Isabel^ (Wellington).

2. Nathaniel^ Hudson (Daniel 0> lived at one time at Lancaster and later at Billerica. He married Rebecca Rugg ; we find no record of his children except that three of them were baptized at Lexington; he is also believed to be the father of John.

Hon. Charles Hudson

He studied theology and was settled at Westminster, where he resided twenty -five years. He represented that town for four years in the House of Representatives, Worcester Co. for six years in the State Senate, served three years on the Executive Council, and represented the Worcester North District eight years in Congress. He was naval officer in the Boston Custom House, four years a member of the State Board of Education, and for four years an assessor of Internal Revenue for the Sixth Collection District of Massachusetts. He published several books, and among them, the History of Marlboro and in 1868 the History of Lexington. In 1849 he moved from Westminster to Lexington. He was selectman from 1868 to 1875.

He married first 21 July 1825 Ann Rider, born 4 July 1806, died 19 Sept. 1829, daughter of John and Mercy (Brigham) of Shrewsbury; secondly 14 May 1830 Martha Brigham Rider, born 15 June 1808, died 11 Jan. 1888, sister of his first wife.

He graduated from the Lawrence Scientific School, Harvard University, 1854. He went West to practice his profession. Subsequently became assistant superintendent Chicago, Burlington & Quincy R. R.; general superintendent Baltimore & Ohio; general manager Minneapolis & St. Louis R. R.; general manager East Tennessee, Virginia & Georgia R. R.; and chief engineer Southern R. R., retiring from active railway service in 1899. He resides at Knoxville, Tenn.

He was graduated from Harvard, 1856, taught the high school of Wayland two years, read law, was admitted to the Suffolk Bar and practiced until his death. He enlisted in 1862, 35th Regiment Mass. Volunteer Infantry, receiving his commission as 2d lieutenant 2 Aug. 1862, was promoted to 1st lieutenant, captain, major, and lieutenant-colonel, 14 Nov. 1864, his term of service expiring 9 Jime 1865. He was in the battles of Antietam, Fredericksburg, Knoxville, North Anna River, Cold Harbor and the various battles about Petersburg. He served on the staffs of Generals Ferrero, Ledlie and White. He was selectman 1866-68.

He married first Mar. 1808 Lucy Crocker, died Aug. 1837; secondly 19 Apr. 1838 Alice Frost, died 7 Nov. 1867, aged 67, daughter of Le\'i and Alice ( ) ; thirdly 19 May 1868 Mrs. Caroline (Frost) McIntyre, born at Billerica, daughter of Levi and Alice ( ) Frost.

John Richard^ Hughes (Richard,^ Richard^) was bom at Sudbury 3 Feb, 1884, son of Richard, born at Bellintampla, King's Co., Ireland, 27 Mar. 1859, died 27 Mar. 1885, and grandson of Richard and Bridget (Mulligan). His mother, Dora White, was born at Bellintampla, Ireland, 11 Aug. 1860, daughter of John and Mary (Lawlor). She married secondly at Concord, 21 Apr. 1897, John James^ Roach.

Hull

Edward^ Hunnewell was born at Bedford, and now lives there. He married Malvina Lawrence, born at Augusta, Me. Children, first two born at Charlestown, the others at Lexington: i. Hunt

Isaac Hunt,^* an assessor 1711, and a subscriber for the purchase of the Common; had presumably the following children: Children, all baptized at Lexington :

Lewis' Hunt (William,^ William^) was born at Salem Dec. 1843, died 29 Nov. 1893, younger son of William, born at Salem 1804, and grandson of William and Mary (Dean). His mother was Anstiss Slocum, born at Salem 1805, daughter of Ebenezer and Sarah (Becket). His ancestor, Lewis Hunt, settled at Salem.

He was a hardware merchant; a Free Mason; became a resident of Lexington in 1884. He owned much real estate in Lexington and built Hunt's Block.

Hurley

1. Daniel Fuller^ Hutchinson (Daniel F.,^ Osgood,^ Thomas,^ Jonathan,* Benjamin,^ Joseph,^ Richard^ was born at Greenfield, N. H., 14 Oct. 1845, younger son of Daniel Fuller, born at Francistown, N. H., 16 Nov. 1809, and Mary (Smith), born at Saugus 31 Jan. 1811, daughter of Francis and Lois (Newhall). The ancestor, Richard Hutchinson, came to America in 1634 and settled at Salem.

1. John Frederick^ Hutchinson (John Q. A.,^ JohnO was born at Brookline, N. H., 6 Jan. 1856, died at Thomasville, Ga., 25 Jan. 1904, only son of John Quincy Adams, born at Milford, N. H., 5 Feb. 1826, and grandson of John and Polly (Burnham). His mother was Amanda R. Wadsworth, born at Milford, N. H., 11 July 1830, daughter of Samuel and Rhoda (Felch) .

He was in the produce business and later a real estate dealer; a Knight Templar; state representative in 1889; selectman 1896-98, 1901-04. He became a resident of Lexington in 1867.

1. JoHN^ Johnson (Capt. Edward^ of Woburn was bom at Canterbury, England, died at Canterbury, Conn., about 1717, where he and his wife had gone in 1712 to live with their son Obadiah.

He was one of the parish assessors in 1712, and in 1715 he was paid for land taken for a road. He was a subscriber for the building of the meeting-house 1692, was taxed 1693, and his name was continued on the tax list in 1695 and 1696.

E, 158th Regiment N. Y. Infantry; was wounded at Fort Harrison, Va., through the bursting of a shell and again wounded during the charge on Fort Gregg, Va. He was promoted 3d sergeant, 2d sergeant, 1st sergeant, and in Mar. 1865 was commissioned by Governor Fenton of New York as 2d lieutenant. He was mustered out of service 30 June 1865 at Richmond, Va. Thomas^ Kendall (Thomas,^ Francis^ was born at Wobum 19 May 1677, son of Thomas and Ruth (Blodgett), and grandson of Francis and Mary (Tidd).

He came from Woburn and was the first of the name at Lexington. In 1713, "discourse being on foot concerning highways, Capt. William Reed offered to give for the peace and quiet of the town " a highway for Thomas Kendall and the neighborhood westerly of him, through his land to the town road. A long, bitter controversy about this road was settled by Kendall's giving a bond to the town in 1730, binding himself and heirs to save the town harmless from all expense in maintaining the road. The locality of his residence was presumably south and west of the Great Meadow, and near the brook running into the same, and near what is now known as the "Katahdin Spring" place. He was constable in 1718, and filled several other subordinate town offices.

He married 7 Nov. 1701 Sarah Cheever, died at Framingham 2 May 1761, aged 75, daughter of Rev. Thomas and Sarah (Bill) of Chelsea. They probably came to Lexington about 1710. They were admitted to the church 1728, dismissed to that at Framingham 1745 to which place they had removed.

1. Ralph Irving^ Lane (Gustavus A.^) was born at Annisquam 4 Oct. 1839, died at Port-au-Prince, Hayti, 12 Nov. 1869, son of Gustavus Adolphus and Clarissa Minot (Peabody).

He married 1 June 1865 Ellen Bayley Saville, born at Gloucester 18 Nov. 1843, daughter of Ira, born at Gloucester 30 Aug. 1797, died 21 Dec. 1865, son of Thomas and Betsey (Haraden). Her mother was Mary Bates, born 5 May 1802, died 15 Dec. 1888, daughter of Obadiah and Hannah (Beal). She became a resident of Lexington 16 Mar. 1865. She taught school at Lexington twentythree years. She is now custodian of the Clark House.

He married Clara Ann Coburn, born at Antrim, N. H., 5 Jan. 1845, daughter of William Wise Currier and Abby Morris Whiting (Fairbanks). She married secondly 20 May 1889, as his second wife, Cyrus Martin.

Larry

JoHN^ Laughton was born 2 Jan. 1682, died 5 Mar. 1768, g. s. at Harvard. He and his wife came to Lexington from Reading about 1720, and were admitted to the church by letter from the Reading church 24 Jan. 1824. He was chosen deacon, and filled the office of assessor in 1722, '23, '24, '28, '29, '34, '35, '38, and '41 ; he was also selectman in 1738. He resided on Mass. Ave., at or near the place now owned by Herbert Wellington. On 1 July 1744 he, his wife and son "Jeremy" were dismissed to the church at Harvard, to which place they had moved a short time before.

Lawrence

The Lawrences were for a considerable period among the prominent citizens at Lexington, the name appearing on the records as early as 1693. They were descendants of John* Lawrence of Wissct, England, who was an early settler at Watertown. The family dates back to 1190, beginning with Sir Robert Lawrence, whose immediate descendants married into the family of Washington, his grandson marrying Matilda, daughter of John de Washington.

John* Lawrence was probably at Watertown as early as 1635 as his eldest child was born there 14 Mar. 1636. By his first wife Elizabeth ( ) he had thirteen children; and by his second, Susanna Batchelder, two.

His son Nathaniel,^ of Groton, born 15 Oct. 1639, died at Lexington 14 Apr. 1724. He married first at Sudbury, 13 Mar. 1661, Sarah Morse, died at Charlestown 25 Nov. 1717, daughter of John and Hannah ( ) of Dedham; secondly Hannah ( ). Wyman says he was admitted freeman in 1672, was early chosen deacon, a representative and much employed in public business. His will mentions sons Nathaniel, John, and Samuel Page, daughters Hannah Houlden, Mary Wheeler, Elizabeth Harris and Deborah, and grandson Lawrence. He did not come to Lexington till after 1701.

He came to Cambridge Fa>rms in 1693, and resided on the Bedford road, at or near the present residence of Patrick Ryan. The locality was at that time called "y® world's end." He was one of the parish assessors in 1702, constable in 1705, selectman in 1716, '17, '22, '25, '26 and '31, and tythingman in 1719.

He married at Groton, 9 Nov. 1687, Anna Tarbell, born 10 June 1670, died 19 Dec. 1732, daughter of Thomas, Jr., and Hannah (Longley). They were admitted to the church 9 Feb. 1699.

He was admitted to the church at Lexington 22 Jan. 1727, dismissed to that of East Sudbury 13 Apr. 1729, lived afterwards at Framingham, and returned to Lexington previous to 1 Apr. 1739, as his son Micah was baptized then. In 1740-41 he was elected to town office, was selectman in 1752, assessor in 1758, '62, '63, and filled the oflfice of highway-surveyer, tythingman, constable, etc. On 9 Jan. 1743 -he and his vnie were admitted to the church by letter of dismission from the church at East Sudbury.

He married 26 Feb. 1726-27 Elizabeth Swain of Reading, born 1707, died 4 July 1790, g. s., daughter of Dr. Benjamin and Margaret ( ) of Reading.

- Besaleel Lawrence, possibly Beialeel' above, served in the Revolution as follows: in the First Campaign of eight months, 1775; in the Fourth Campaign, July 1775, five months to Ticoaderoga; as tax collector in 1777; on the Committee of Correspondence, 1780.

Lyman^ Lawrence (Josiah O./ Thaddeus,* Timothy,^ Jonathan,'* Eleazer,^ Peleg,'^ John^) was born at Cohasset 16 June 1839, son of Josiah Oakes, born at Cobasset 1 May 1797, and grandson of Thaddeus and Joy (Oakes). His mother was Hannah Kent Tower, born at Cohasset.

Robert Means^ Lawrence (William R.,^ Amos,^ Samuel,^ Amos,^ John,^ Nathaniel,^ John"^) was born at Boston 14 May 1847, son of William Richards, born at Boston 3 May 1812, and grandson of Amos and Sarah (Richards). His mother, Susan Coombs Dana, was born at Marblehead 16 July 1817, daughter of Rev. Samuel and Henrietta (Bridge).

He studied languages at Melun, Seine-et-Marne, France; graduated from Harvard, A.B., 1869; Harvard Medical School, M.D., 1873 ^ spent two years in further medical studies at Vienna, Austria, and Paris, France; is now engaged in literary work (genealogy, medical folk-lore and psychotherapy). He was assistant surgeon and surgeon 1st Regiment M. V. M., 1887-92; selectman at Lexington 1884-86 and member of the school committee 1888-90. He came to Lexington in 1882.

He married at Brookline, 30 June 1870, Katherine Lawrence Cleaveland, born at Brooklyn, N. Y., 6 Mar. 1845, died at Boston 25 Oct. 1907, daughter of Nehemiah and Catherine Atherton (Means).

Louis Henry^ Lawrence (Benjamin F.^) was born at Cambridge 1 Mar. 1874, son of Benjamin Franklin, born at Jamaica Plain. His mother, Ella Louise Ryan, was born at Cambridge 4 July 1830, daughter of Charles Henry and Mary Ellen (Ward). He is a Free Mason. He became a resident of Lexington in 1903.

Alonzo^ Leavitt (Jeremiah T., 2 Thomas ^ was born at Parsonsfield, Me., 7 July 1830, died 20 Dec. 1897, youngest child of Jeremiah Tuck, born at Hampton, N. H., Sept. 1780, and grandson of Thomas and Abigail (Tuck). His mother was Margaret Libby, born at Conway, N. H., 1790, daughter of Joseph and Mary (Cole).

He was a manufacturer of piano and organ keys, and a member of the Handel and Haydn Society. He enlisted 15 Oct. 1862 in Co. B, 1st Battalion Heavy Artillery, discharged 29 June 1865, by reason of expiration of service. He became a resident of Lexington in 1873.

Leonard Lewis

Dio"^ Lewis (John,* Joshua,' Joshua,^ Joshua*) was born at Auburn, N. y., 3 Mar. 1823, died at Yonkers, N. Y., 21 May 1886, son of John and Delecta (Barbour) and grandson of Joshua and ( ) (Grinnell) . He was descended from Joshua Lewis, a Baptist clergyman from Wales, who settled in Connecticut in 1780.

He studied medicine at Auburn, N. Y., attended a course of lectures in the medical department of Harvard, and afterwards took his diploma from the Medical College at Cleveland, Ohio. He first settled at Buffalo, N. Y., where he followed his profession for several years, and there edited a medical magazine. After traveling a few years at home and abroad he gave himself to the development of a new system of physical culture. For this purpose he came to Boston in the year 1860, and established a Normal Institute for physical education. To his labors as president of that institution he added the establishment and conduct of a Young Ladies' Seminary ,which he opened at Lexington in 1864. He was the author of a number of books on the subject of gymnastics and hygiene, the titles of thirteen being given in Allibone's Dictionary.

Henry Wood' Lewis (Calvin,^ Calvin^) was born at East Boston 13 Aug. 1862, youngest son of Calvin, born at Marshfield 12 Mar. 1819, and grandson of Calvin and Abigail (Barstow). His mother was Sarah Melinda Wood, born at Norton 30 Apr. 1830, daughter of Eli and Fanny (White), a descendant of Peregrine White.

Lyman Gushing' Little (Stephen W.,^ Stephen W.^) was born at Newbury 16 Nov. 1866, son of Stephen William, born at Newbury 17 July 1831, and grandson of Stephen William and Hannah Morgan (Russell). His mother was Mary Little, born at Newbury

7 July 1831, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Moody). He is descended from George Little who came from London, England, in 1640 and settled at Newbury.

He married at Newburyport, 5 Nov. 1890, Helen Brewster Moody, born at Augusta, Me., 25 July 1867, daughter of Samuel and Belinda Knight (Graves). They became residents of Lexington 7 June 1906.

Leonard Jarvis^ Livermore (Solomon K.,^ Jonathan,^ Jonathan,* Jonathan,' Samuel,^ John^) was born at Milford, N. H., 8 Dec. 1822, died at Cambridge 30 May 1886, eldest child of Solomon Kidder, born at Wilton, N. H., 2 Mar. 1779, and grandson of Rev. Jonathan and Elizabeth (Kidder). His mother, Abigail Adkins Jarvis, was born at Cambridge 15 Oct. 1783, daughter of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Taintor) . He was descended from John Livermore who came from Little Thurloa, Suffolk, England, and settled at Watertown in 1634.

He graduated from Harvard, 1842, and from the Cambridge Divinity School, 1846. He settled first at East Boston, then at Clinton, and at Lexington 4 Oct. 1857. He left Lexington in Nov. 1866, and was later at Danvers. He was a member of |the school committee 1858-66, and editor of the first edition of the Hymn and Tune Book of the American Unitarian Association; also editor of the Clinton Courant.

They had seven children.

2. William* Locke (William^), born 18 Jan. 1659, died 8 July 1738. He was a Ideacon, chosen in 1709, and a selectman 1704, 1732. He resided in that part of Woburn which was afterward Burlington, and on petition of Thomas Locke, his grandson, after his decease, a part of this estate, including the house, was set off to Lexington. This house was located on present Lowell St., and was known in later years as the Hammond Locke place.

He married first 29 May 1683 Sarah Whitmore, bapt. 30 Mar. 1662, daughter of Francis^ and Isabel (Parke) of Cambridge; secondly at Woburn, 8 June 1698, Abigail Hay ward, died in 1748 or '49.

V. Abigail,* b. 22 June 1710; m. 3 Oct. 1728 Jonas* Merriam. 3. Joseph^ Locke (William^), born 8 Mar. 1664, died 1754. He resided in that part of Cambridge which is now included in Lexington, and his farm probably joined that of his brother William. In 1695 his father gave him 20 acres of land at a place called "Cambridge farms," upon which there was at that time a mansion-house, barn, and "out-housing," also an orchard and fields, bounded S. E. by Capt. Cooke's farm, W. by Joseph Simonds' ; also included in the gift Were 4 acres at Bull Meadow, so called, bounded S. W. by the Cambridge line. He subsciibed in 1691 towards the building of a meeting-house, in 1711 for the Common, and his name was on the tax list for the payment of the minister's salary for the year beginning 1 May 1692 and ending 1 May 1693.

He subscribed in 1711 towards the purchase of the Common, held the ofBce of selectman 1720 and 1729, assessor in 1714, and possessed a large landed property. His residence was about one half mile from Lexington Common on the county road to Bedford.

He married Ruth ( ), a member of the church before 1698, died 17 Dec. 1714, in the 37th year of her age, g. s.; secondly (intention dated 8 May 1717) Mary Day of Ipswich.

7. Ebenezer^ Locke (William,^ WilUam^), married Elizabeth PouLTER, born 13 Feb. 1694-95, daughter of Jonathan^ and Elizabeth ( ). They owned the covenant in Lexington 28 Apr. 1717. They resided at Woburn and attended meeting at Lexington, and here their children were baptized.

8. Joseph' Locke (Joseph,^ William^, born 19 Mar. 1699, died 13 Jan. 1785. He served in the French War in 1754, 1755 and 1756, and resided at Lexington on his father's homestead, and in the west half of the house.

He resided at Lexington, Woburn and Waltham. He was present with Walker's Woburn company on the 19th of April 1775. He is said to have been in the battles of Ticonderoga and White Plains, dying at Ticonderoga.

He was a carpenter by trade and resided on the old family homestead which was set off to Lexington. He served in the Revolutionary army, belonging to Walker's company.

He married 27 June 1751 Rebecca Lawrence, born 1728, died 14 Mar. 1814, daughter of John* and Elizabeth (Stone) of Woburn. She married secondly 15 Jan. 1795 Noah Eaton of Woburn.

He was in the French War in 1756 and sergeant in 1760. Joseph Locke, Jr., presumably he, was one of the detachment from Capt. Parker's company which marched to Cambridge 17 June 1775.

He married Sarah Baldwin, born at Billerica 4 Feb. 1739^0, died 19 Feb. 1824, daughter of David and Sarah (Hill). Children, first two on Lexington records :

He resided in the north part of Lexington on the farm owned later by William Locke on North St. He was in the French War in 1762 and served in the three months' campaign in the Jerseys. He was a member of Capt. Parker's company on the Common 19 April 1775.

He was one of the detachment from Capt. Parker's company which marched to Cambridge 6 May 1775, served in John Bridge's company at Roxbury from 4 to 8 Mar. 1776, was taken prisoner at sea and confined in the seaman's prison at Forton, England.* He was collector of taxes at Lexington in 1798. His farm was on a part of that owned by William Locke, on North St.

He married, intention dated 23 Dec. 1772, Jerusha Richardson, born 2 June 1745, died 15 Nov. 1833, g. s,, daughter of Reuben and Esther (Wyman) of Stoneham.

He resided at Burlington and Lexington for the greater part of his life, and afterward at Boston. He was one of Capt. Parker's company on the morning of April 19, 1775 ; also in the detachment which marched to Cambridge 6 May 1775, and again 17 June of that year; and he was besides in the five months' campaign to Ticonderoga in July, 1775.

He married first 21 Dec. 1780 Sarah Russell, born 24 Mar. 1761, died 1799, daughter of Philip* and Lydia (Dodge); secondly 2 Nov. 1800 Eunice Winship, baptized 12 Feb. 1758, died 29 Sept. 1825, daughter of Isaac and Hannah ( ); thirdly 25 Feb. 1828 Mrs. Deborah (Robbins) Blodgett, baptized 30 June 1765, died 12 Oct. 1849, daughter of Stephen* and Sarah (Wooton), and widow of Nathan® Blodgett.

He was a member of Capt. Walker's company 19 April 1775, chosen sergeant 1782. He resided on the old Locke place which was set off to Lexington from BurUngton. He was selectman at Lexington 1804.

The regiment was ordered to North Carolina where it took part in engagements at Plymouth, Williamstown, Rainbow Bluff, and in several skirmishes. Discharged at New-Berne, N. C, 26 June 1865, by reason of expiration of service. He was assessor from 1900 to 1908, water commissioner 1896 to 1907, and since then superintendent of waterworks.

1. Joseph^ Loring (John,^ Thomas^) was born at Hull 10 Mar. 1659-60, died at Hingham, 3 Feb. 1691-92, son of John, born in England, and Mary (Baker) and grandson of Dea. Thomas and Jane (Newton) of Axminster, Devonshire, England.

He came to Lexington from Hingham probably about 1706, bought ninety acres of land of John Poulter in 1706, and in 1711 was one of the subscribers for the purchase of the Common. He was constable 1714 and town treasurer 1724-26, and was chosen deacon in 1743.

He married Lydia Fiske of Cambridge, born 14 May 1685, died 4 Oct. 1758, daughter of David^ and Sarah ( ). They were admitted to the church 4 July 1708.

He was chosen deacon 20 May 1756 and held that office thirtyone years; he was often employed on important committees, and was on that of correspondence in 1773. He resided on what is now the Hunt estate, opposite the High School.

His house was pillaged. " an Amount of the Real and Personal Eftate belonging to Joseph Loring of Lexington def troyed and carried off by the British Troops in their Ravages in said Town on the 19 of April 1775. Viz. -

He was one of Capt. Parker's company 19 April 1775, marched to Cambridge 17 June 1775, and was also in the three months' campaign of 1778. He entered the marine service with John Chandler, Jr., and being on the southern coast under Commodore Tucker, was included by Gen, Lincoln in the capitulation of Charleston, S. C. After remaining for some time a prisoner, during which he suffered severely, he was exchanged, and in destitution and comparative nakedness, was compelled to beg his way home to Lexington, amid the taunts and sneers of the Tories.

He married 26 Nov. 1772 Betty Pollard of Bedford, born 12 Nov. 1750, died at Rindge, N. H., 23 Mar. 1836, daughter of Walter and Dorothy (Danforth). They were admitted to the church 27 Feb. 1774, and moved to Rindge, N. H., about 1810.

He was a member of Capt. Parker's company, and was with it upon the Common on the morning of 19 April 1775. He was with the detachment which marched to Cambridge on 6 May, and also on Bunker's Hill on the day of the battle, and at Cambridge two months in the campaign of 1776. His name appears also on the list of men who enlisted in Lexington for three years, or during the war, among those who served in the Continental Line, or the regular army of the Revolution, He not only performed his duty after the war had begun, but he performed an important duty introductory to the affair of 19 April 1775. On the evening of the 18th, when it was known that certain British officers had gone toward Concord, he volunteered with two others to go and watch their movements. He was taken prisoner and kept several hours, until on the return of these officers he was set at liberty near Lexington Common, about daylight.

This family acted a conspicuous part on that memorable occasion. The church plate was kept at the house of Deacon Loring, and fearing that the British soldiers in their vandaHsm might destroy it, Lydia Loring, a sister of Jonathan, took the precaution to secrete it under some brush not far from the house, and so prevented it from being destroyed, or carried off with the rest of the property of the family.

Mann

James^ Mann of Lexington died at Mason, N. H., about 1780 or 1781. He was brought up by Richard Armes of Lexington, who in his will, dated 25 Dec. 1755, leaves him a legacy of £40 " if he should return from the wars." In 1756-57 he petitioned the General Court "setting forth that he was in the two Expeditions against Crown Point in 1755 and 1756." He was taxed in 1738 for both real and personal estate, and his name appears on the tax bill for a number of years. He was a soldier from Lexington in the French War in 1759 and 1760.

He was an accomplished scholar and antiquarian. The History of Woburn is the best known of his historical works.

He probably resided some years after his marriage at Cambridge and then moved to Lexington where he and his wife were admitted to the church 15 Sept. 1771, by letter of dismission from the First Church of Cambridge. He was a soldier in Capt. Parker's company in 1775, and served in the army in the Jerseys the following year. He enlisted later for three years, or during the war, and served in the Continental line. He was selectman in 1785, '86, '89, '91. His will was dated 20 Mar. 1805, probated 14 May 1805.

Arthur Augustus' Marshall (Herman A.,^ AbeP) was born at Clinton 9 Dec. 1866, son of Herman Augustus, born at Tewksbury 2 Mar. 1829, and grandson of Abel and Abigail (Farmer). George Edward' Martin (George H.,* JamesO was born at Nor\\ach, Conn., 27 Jan. 1851, son of George Henry, born at Winchendon 11 Feb. 1823. His mother, Sarah Olney Hopkins, was born at Norwich 17 Mar. 1824. He is descended from Stephen Hopkins, a Quaker and colonial governor of Rhode Island, who came from England.

He was graduated from Yale, A.B., 1878, Yale Theological Seminary, B.D., 1878; D.D. from Wabash College, Ind., and Park College, Mo., 1896. He came to Lexington from Lowell in 1911 and was settled as pastor of the Hancock church.

William Pierce^ Martin (Pearl/ Ezekiel,' Ezekiel,^ Robert^ was born at Lewiston, Me., 30 July 1858, only son of Dr. Pearl, born at Turner, Me., 29 Sept. 1829, and grandson of Ezekiel and Elizabeth (Cushman). His mother, Mary Davis Frye, was daughter of Col. John M. and Alice (Davis). He is descended from Robert Martin, who settled at Windham, Me., and later at New Gloucester, Me.

He moved to Medford when ten years old. He graduated from Bowdoin, 1880, from Boston University Law School, LL.B., 1883, and was admitted to the Suffolk bar the same year. He was city auditor at Medford 1885-86, and in 1893-94 State representative from Medford. He is a member of the board of directors and vicepresident of the Medford Trust Co., a trustee of the Medford Savings Bank, and is a Free Mason. He became a resident of Lexington in 1902.

He was an assessor in 1702, '19, '21, '23, '25, '30, '31, and a subscriber for the purchase of the Common 1711; constable 1714; town clerk 1729, '31, '34, '35, '36, and also selectman. His name is dignified by the title of ensign. He lived on the main street a little below the Old Munroe Tavern: hence the name of "Mason's Hollow."

He married 18 Oct. 1699 Elizabeth Spring, born 9 Apr. 1675, daughter of Lieut. John and Hannah (Barsham). In seating the meeting-house in 1699 he was "plast in y« fecond feat in y^ front gallarye." He and his wife were admitted to the church 19 Dec. 1708.

He appears to have resided at Charlestown, Stoneham, Lexington, Medford, and Cambridge. He was private secretary to Governor Belcher, Deputy Naval Officer, 1731, Deputy Secretary Province, 1734, Registrar of Deeds, 1781-84, Clerk of Courts, Middlesex County, fifty-five years.

He married 17 June 1731 Lydia Loring, born 17 Jan. 1710-11, died 18 Feb. 1791, daughter of Dea. Joseph* and Lydia (Fiske). Children, all born at Lexington:

He was in the French War in 1762," and belonged to Capt. Parker's company, serving on the Common and with the Cambridge detachment 6 May 1775. He was town clerk from 1770 to 1790 and was somewhat noted in his day as a schoolmaster.

He was graduated from Harvard, 1817, attended the hardly organized Divinity School, and in Dec. 1820 was approbated for the ministry. He was colleague for six months with Dr. Channing, ordained 14 Mar. 1822, took the pastorate of the Brooklyn, Conn., church, resigned 1822, and came to Boston. He was agent for the Mass. Anti-Slavery Society for several years. In 1836 he went to South Scituate for six years. In 1842 he came to Lexington as principal of the Normal School for Women; while here he supplied the pulpit of the First Church for six months, and brought about a settlement of the vexed question of the ministerial fund. He went to Syracuse, N. Y., in 1845 as pastor of the Unitarian church and resigned in 1867.

He enlisted 16 July 1864 in Co. F, 5th Mass. Inf'y, discharged 16 Nov. 1864, by reason of expiration of service. He became a resident of Lexington about 1870, and was a Free Mason.

He married 30 Mar. 1869 Julia Clarissa Abbey, born at Middlebury, Vt., died at Arlington 22 June 1906, daughter of Orin and Demmis Clarissa (Tucker).

Mead, Meade, Meads

Gabriel^ Mead of Dorchester, made freeman in 1638, died 1666, aged 79. His will mentions several daughters, and a son Israel,^ born 1639, lived in Watertown, moved to Dedham, and later perhaps to Woburn. Israel,^ presumably son of the preceding, sometimes spoken of as of Woburn, and sometimes as of Cambridge, is undoubtedly one and the same person, and from him the Lexington family of Mead is in part descended.

1. Israel' Mead (Israel,^ Gabriel^), died 6 Aug. 1714. He was appointed in Cambridge, 1683, a "viewer of wood," and whether he resided at that time in the old town, or at the Farms, is uncertain, but, in 1692, when the North Precinct was organized, he was within the territory, and taxed for ministerial land then purchased. On the same tax bill is the name of his son, Thomas Mead. Israel Mead's name is on the tax bill for the payment of the minister's salary from 1 May 1692 to 1 May 1693.
