Selected from the Digital Public Library of America's 163 image records catalogued for this county. Every one shown here carries a public-domain status or a licence that permits reuse on a site that carries advertising; non-commercial, share-alike and restricted images are excluded. The selection is spread across the county's towns (at most eight per town), so no single institution's bulk upload crowds out the rest. Each opens the holding library's record, and the complete set at the Digital Public Library of America is one click away.

The county from the air

48 shown

Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 3,347 frames inside the rectangle that bounds this county; the 48 frames below were taken over the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest. The full set is free to browse and download at EarthExplorer under the dataset Aerial Photo Single Frames.

October 2024FloodOak Hill$240,000,000Volusia County Emergency Management reported significant urban, street, and low-lying flooding as a result of 6 to 12 inches of rain in association with Hurricane Milton. A period of very heavy rainfall rates associated with the core of the storm led to flash flooding during the overnight period (Oct 9 - 10).||The heavy rain that fell as a result of the storm also led to a long-term river flood event along the St. Johns with the river near Geneva entering major flood on Oct 14, peaking at 10.15 feet on Oct 15. At Deland, the river rapidly rose to major flood stage on Oct 11, peaking at 5.49 ft on Oct. 14. Rainfall totals reached 18 to 28 inches in several coastal areas. In addition to the accumulation of rain water, onshore flow and high tides over northeast Florida restricted water from draining into the intracoastal waterways, leading to a persistence of high water levels in many neighborhoods. Damage surveys determined 1531 homes were damaged in the county nearly 69 million dollars in damages and expenses. One indirect fatality was attributed to the flooding, when an intoxicated man fell into high waters and drowned. The man was last seen in Daytona Beach on May 21, and his body was discovered in Holly Hill on May 23.
