This is a typical Cape Cod Barn of the early century used for cows and horses on a small farm.

Architectural Information

This gray shingled rectangular Cape Cod barn faces south with a shed to the west and the north. It is west of the Benjamin Dyer House (HABS MA-698), and there is a small pig house to its rear. This working barn, now in poor condition, was added to and changed for varying functions. There is no land- scaping near it. 1. Over-all dimensions: 2k' x 2, Foundation: Rocks on grade. 3. Walls: Vertical planks covered with wooden shingles, The post and beam frame has some second-hand timber. h. Condition: Pair. 5- Openings: a. Doors: The west shed on the south front has one large sliding door. The south front of the main structure and the north side have two plank doors. The hay loft door is in the east end of the barn. b.

Windows: The windows are six-light fixed sash, except for one window in the east side, which is double hung three-light over three-light sash. Floor plan: The first floor of the barn is one large room with stalls for one horse and two cows In the center section. The west shed room is for vehicle storage and the north shed for storage bins. Hay is stored in the loft, and reached by a permanently fixed ladder. BENJAMIN DYER HOUSE HABS No. MA-698 (Page 2) Flooring: Random width planking. Hardware: Iron strap hinges and door hooks. Roof: a. The main barn has a gable roof and the west and north sheds have shed roofs. Roof planks are parallel to the ridge. All roofs are covered with wooden shingles. b. Cornice, eaves: The barn has simple trim at the juncture of the roof and walls.

Site: The barn is to the west of the Benjamin Dyer House. (HABS No. MA.-698) A pig house, a chicken house, a summer house, and a privy are on the property.
