The house displays the transition of this neighborhood near downtown from single- family residential to apartments in the early years of this century. It combines elements of Queen Anne and colonial revival style architecture and is readily recognized as a former residence extended and altered into apartments. Description: The house stands on a fairly tall foundation of rock-faced limestone. It rises a full two stories plus has a sizable attic. Its exterior is faced with drop siding with novelty siding accents. Windows are asymmetrically arranged on the exterior but generally have one-over-one rectangular sash. Attic windows in the front section have multi-paned sash. The main roof is laterally oriented to the street and is covered with slate. Two narrow gabled dormers face the front.

The main roof is a truncated gable roof, with a broad center flat section, extending back from the lateral gable front section. It broadens out toward the rear to form a truncated gable roof. A north-facing two-story semi-octagonal bay window is capped by a protruding heavy attic dormer with shed roof. Behind here, also facing north, is a recessed first floor porch with bracketed supports and featuring a semi--octagonal bay window at its center. The front elevation has a two-story full-width front porch whose lower section has brick piers supporting the upper balcony and narrow cluster columns supporting its flat roof. The house has four chimneys, asymmetrically located in the central flat roof area.

History: This was a Queen Anne style single-family residence, probably built in that was extensively altered and extended after the tum of the century. Its entire front elevation has apparently been rebuilt. The house probably began as a cross-shaped residence with intersecting gable roof and apse-like projecting north side wing. This wing survives, but the front section was extensively rebuilt and the rear wing broadened and extended. The two-story front porch also dates from this apartment expansion. F. M. Cargill had a permit taken out in to connect the house to city water lines. He is not listed in the directory that year as living at this address, however. By this house had been made into apartments, probably assuming its present form. That year, A H.

Potter, physician, was listed at this address, as was Arthur C. Arend, a manager, along with his wife, Lorena. Winona Timeus, a widow, and Hiram (sic) Stem, also a widow, were listed at this address in These occupants were all gone within a few years and new occupants took their place. From this was the home of G. E. and Martha Bauer as well as other occupants. He worked as a bookkeeper.

and later Springfield city directories. The building stands within the South Fountain Avenue Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
