This house is significant as an example of vernacular tum of the century working class housing stock in the city. It survives with its basic form intact and is notable for its broad lateral symmetrical front elevation and its saltbox form, probably the result of an early rear addition. Description: This is a rectangular two-story frame dwelling that has four bays across its front elevation and one bay along its side elevation. The house rises from a low rubble stone foundation and is of balloon frame construction. Its exterior walls are covered with apparently original drop siding. While the windows have been boarded, they are symmetrically arranged on the exterior and probably have wood one-over-one double-hung sash intact behind the panels.

The front doorway is to one side and apparently has a transom overhead so that it rises to the tops of the tall first floor windows. It faces onto a small simple stoop. The lateral gable roof which rises above the second floor windows, has a small simple overhang and is accented by a center chimney. The roof breaks, stepping down a foot or so at the rear lean-to wing, whose roof gives the house an appearance of being a saltbox. A tall rear chimney rises from the center of this wing and there is a rear entrance as well. The house almost touches its neighbor to one side, but to the other side is an open space, where a hosue was demolished.

The second floor front-facing windows are lower in height than those on the first floor, suggesting that the second floor ceilings are sloped front and rear with tall kneewalls. This house appears as though it was originally a single-family residence that was converted to a double some years ago. History: This building was probably constructed around the tum of the century, judging from its styling and materials. Although it seems originally to have been a single-family residence, by it was a double house. Raymond A and Linda Ford lived at 531 Gallagher St in He worked as a chipper. Stodard and Caroline Slonaker lived at 533 from he worked as a carpenter.

The longest term occupant of 531 Gallagher was Herbert Clingman, a clerk, who lived here from The address has been listed as vacant since the longest occupant of 533 Gallagher was Dallas Goody, from who lived here with his wife Verna. He was a carpenter. This unit has been vacant since It is possible that in the house was again converted to single-family usage.

The building stands within the Champion Historic District, which has been determined eligible by the Ohio State Historic Preservation Officer for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
