News Of The Assassination Of Lincoln

One week later, while the people were yet rejoicing, the news came that Lincoln had been assassinated at Ford's Theater. So horrible was the sensation produced that people at first refused to believe it, and waited anxiously for details. When the dreadful truth became confirmed on the 15th, the deepest gloom of horror and despair seized every heart.

The Salt Works

salt springs along its course. These were discovered at an carly day from the great resort made of them by deer which came to drink. They became famous deer-licks, where, as long as those animals were found in the county in any abundance, they could be killed by the hunters, and were so killed. Some of the salty localities gave evidence of such strength that it was resolved to evaporate the water, and thus begin the business of manufacturing salt.

April 2014FloodMt Tabor2 killed, $8,000WTHI-TV reported that Indiana Conservation Officers said the morning of Saturday the 5th; they were searching for two missing people after their vehicle became submerged in flood waters. Their bodies were found later Saturday afternoon.||Officers were looking for a 24-year-old female and a 5-year-old boy, of Paragon. Both went missing early Saturday morning.||According to DNR officials, a female driver, the deceased female, and the deceased boy were traveling in a car on Moon Road when they became lost Saturday. The three were trying to make their way back to Paragon.||The driver of the car attempted to drive through high water. Officials say the road did not have a high water sign because it is so infrequently traveled.||After the driver entered the water, she tried to reverse, but the car was taken into the water. The two deceased could not swim, so the driver told them to get on top of the car while she swam to get help at a nearby home.||When the driver returned from getting help, the car, along with the two, were gone.||Officers searched the area for hours Saturday. Around 4:20 p.m., the boy's body was found in the flood waters. The female's was found shortly after, around 4:40 p.m. The bodies were found about 100 yards from the vehicle, which had drifted about 100 yards from its original location.
June 2021Flash FloodArlington1 killed, 1 hurt, $25,000,000A 31 year old male was swept away in a vehicle in floodwaters from clear creek near the intersection of College Avenue and Dodds Street. Another person of unknown age and sex was also in the vehicle at the time but was able to escape with only minor injuries. Numerous videos and pictures showed standing water along portions of the downtown including Walnut Street. Many businesses in the area remained shut down for a week to clean up issues related to the flood waters. Water rushed into a nursing home which required the building to evacuate.
January 2007FloodUnionville1 killed, $10,000Lake Monroe flooded due to January rains. A man was killed when he drove into flooded local roads.
June 2018Thunderstorm WindPayne1 killedWTHR-13 reported that Indiana Conservation officers found the body of 26-year-old man around 7:30pm Sunday the 3rd while searching Monroe Lake with side scan sonar equipment. He was in about 15 feet of water near the area where he had been swimming from his boat.||An Indiana Department of Natural Resources spokesperson said the man was swimming off a pontoon he rented with three friends when he disappeared Friday evening as a thunderstorm with strong winds passed overhead.||Friends say the man was a good swimmer, which might have been why he went into the water without a life jacket. When a storm suddenly kicked up out on the lake though, it was too much for him.

February 2026Tornado (EF2)(Bmg)Mnroe Co Arpt B$20,000,000An EF-2 tornado tracked 3.73 miles through west-central Monroe County, across the Bloomington Airport up to the Interstate Route 69 interchange with Indiana Route 48. The maximum path width was 440 yards with the tornado causing significant damage to neighborhoods, apartments, businesses, and portions of the airport. Extensive tree damage also occurred.||The tornado first developed in wooded areas west of the airport before rapidly intensifying as it moved into a small neighborhood just west of the airport. This area experienced the event's most intense winds, extensive tree damage along with multiple points of structural damage to homes. As the tornado progressed eastward, it caused damage to an airplane hangar. While passing over the airfield, the KBMG ASOS recorded a wind gust of 70 mph. The tornado continued east-northeast, damaging numerous homes before striking a newly constructed neighborhood where additional high-end EF-1 to low-end EF-2 damage occurred. Additional EF-1 damage was observed further northeast at an apartment complex. After producing damage to a bank overhang and causing roofing damage to several warehouse structures, the tornado dissipated near the east end of this business district, immediately west of I-69. Peak wind speeds were estimated at 120 mph.

June 2021Flash FloodYellowstone$2,000,000Numerous water rescues were performed during the early morning hours of June 19th. Many county and state roads were under water as a result of locations receiving more than 7 inches of rain.
May 2025Tornado (EF2)Elwren$1,200,000The episode's third tornado was the last of three tornadoes spawned from a rotating supercell that crossed southern central Indiana. This long-track circulation crossed southern Monroe County and Brown County before tracking into west-central Bartholomew County for its final 3 miles. The tornado produced mainly EF1 damage, although EF2 intensity occurred occasionally in Monroe County, especially in the Clear Creek area, as well as an approximate 4-mile length in Brown County near and just north of the Stone Head area.||The tornado touched down about a quarter-mile southwest of the intersection of West Elwren Road and West Elwren Lane and tracked eastward, producing minor structural damage while damaging many trees up until it crossed Indiana Route 45 at West Elwren Road. Here the south and east walls and the entire roof of a large horse barn were removed; the building's main supporting vertical wooden posts were broken, but the walls that were lost were not anchored to the dirt foundation. The circulation continued east into the Clear Creek community, damaging many trees and causing minor damage to homes. The small Clear Creek Post Office's roof was removed and thrown about 50 yards to the east-northeast; this cinder-block building was only anchored by mortar with no reinforcement, with the blocks caving on the eastern wall when the roof was pulled off. Adjacent to the post office, numerous trees were topped or snapped about two-thirds of the way up. A nearly-constant path of EF0 to EF1 damage to trees and structures continued east from the post office. The tornado strengthened to EF2 intensity around Old Indiana Route 37: two unanchored garages/outbuildings were destroyed with debris thrown nearly 100 yards, while a metal storage unit was lifted and tossed nearly 40 yards, landing on top of two cars; single-floor double rental units on the north side of the tornado saw substantial roof damage, and several cars were rolled. The tornado continued east, where an A-frame building was pulled south off its foundation while remaining intact, and an older motel lost its roof and an east side wall while numerous adjacent trees were snapped. The tornado then tracked south of the Knight Ridge community while crossing the northern-most portion of Monroe Lake, maintaining EF0 to EF1 intensity, damaging trees and some buildings. The vortex's width peaked in Monroe County at 350 yards.||The tornado crossed Brown County from west to east, tracking over Crooked Creek Lake, through Brown County State Park and just north of the Stone Head community; the circulation lifted occasionally, yet was on the ground most of the time. Extensive tree damage occurred amid the very dense woods of the county's western half, with isolated structures also occasionally impacted. The vortex intensified and widened substantially within Brown County State Park, with significant tree damage along a long path from well west of Horseman Camp Road, over a ridge and into Horseman Camp where several campers were staying at the time; trees were snapped and uprooted, with very few left standing in the camp. The width was 300-350 yards from the camp through Mount Liberty Road. The tornado then shrank in width in far-eastern Brown County, with remaining damage to mostly trees, and EF0 to EF1 damage to any structures.||The circulation continued into west-central Bartholomew County with a path width of 100-200 yards, producing mainly tree damage, especially through the northern portions of Grandview Lake. The tornado continued to weaken and finally ended about two-thirds of a mile northeast of Grandview Lake. Peak wind gusts were 128 mph.
March 2023Tornado (EF3)Stinesville$1,066,000Continuation from Owen County of the rotating supercell thunderstorm's second EF3. The tornado reached peak intensity while crossing the Owen-Monroe County line, where the strongest winds in Monroe County were 152 mph along West Wolf Mountain Road. Here, 0.2 to 0.3 miles east of North County Line Road, the tornado destroyed both a mobile home and single story homes with little anchoring on cinder blocks, among many damaged and debarked trees. Back closer to North County Line Road, and slightly farther north of the center of the tornado's path, winds had separated a trailer home from its attached structure and garage, allowing the home to roll and flatten. Farther east along West Wolf Mountain Road, EF2-intensity damage was observed 0.50 to 0.75 miles east of the county line, with areas where nearly all trees were uprooted or snapped, and several single-family homes lost large sections of roofing; a few debarked trees were observed, but with less frequency than seen closer to the county line.||The tornado continued for another 2.7 miles while gradually weakening through EF2 and EF1 intensities. At North Texas Ridge Road hardwood trees were snapped off while a few homes lost small portions of roofing. At the intersection of West Brighton Road and North Fulton Road a narrower corridor of smaller trees were snapped or uprooted, including one tree downed onto a house; the tornado track ended about 250 feet northeast of this intersection.
June 2008Flash FloodStinesville$1,000,000State Road 37 was flooded across the northern part of Monroe County due to heavy rain that caused flash flooding. Many roads were closed and some homes were being evacuated at Stinesville and Ellettsville. Flash flooding along Bryant's Creek caused people to be stuck in their houses. Indiana University's campus sustained damage to the football field and Psychology building.
June 2023Thunderstorm Wind(Bmg)Mnroe Co Arpt B$500,000A 58 mph thunderstorm wind gust was measured at the BMG ASOS. Numerous trees and power lines downed nearby with over 25000 power outages caused by the storm.
June 2023Tornado (EF1)Stanford$450,000A supercell thunderstorm spawned this third tornado of the day, which would track across far southwestern Monroe County, for its first 3 miles in a mainly easterly direction, before turning more east-southeasterly along the track's final 1.5 miles. The tornado inflicted a combination of EF0 and EF1 intensity damage. Strongest winds were estimated at 100 mph over latter portions of the track, both where the tornado turned right and again when impacting a home shortly after crossing South Rockport Road.||The tornado began as an EF0 on the south side of West Carmichael Road, about 1500 feet west-northwest of the intersection of West Carmichael Road and West Rock East Road; here it damaged multiple outbuildings and a barn. About a half mile of EF1 intensity damage then occurred along West Rock East Road including multiple trees snapped at the trunk. Near the midpoint of the track upon crossing South Lee Phillips Road, the tornado caused isolated tree and home damage including uprooted a hardwood tree and blowing out a window. 0.9 miles later the tornado reached peak intensity over a slight rise of ground, with winds snapping trees, destroying a wood-anchored shed, and bending an anchored steel plate. The tornado then turned to the east-southeast, and again exhibited peak intensity upon crossing South Rockport Road where a well-built barn was partially destroyed and a 2-story home sustained extensive roof damage. For the final 0.8 miles of its track, the tornado roughly paralleled South Rockport Road while occasionally snapping pine trees, before ending about 4 miles west of the western end of Monroe Lake.
