The bookstore stands on a site once owned by Anne Hutchinson, who was expelled from the colony in 163 8 for heresy. The original building was destroyed in the fire of and this gambrel-roofed structure was erected in by Dr. Thomas Creese. Initially used as a pharmacy, the building was leased to a bookseller named Timothy Harrington Carter in The firm Carter & Hendlee was followed by several other booksellers and publishers, but the most famous of these was Ticknor & Fields. Between and Ticknor & Fields was the nation's premier publisher and attracted writers such as Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John Greenleaf Whittier, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Charles Dickins, and Louisa May Alcott.
