Selected from the Digital Public Library of America's 144 image records catalogued for this county. Every one shown here carries a public-domain status or a licence that permits reuse on a site that carries advertising; non-commercial, share-alike and restricted images are excluded. The selection is spread across the county's towns (at most eight per town), so no single institution's bulk upload crowds out the rest. Each opens the holding library's record, and the complete set at the Digital Public Library of America is one click away.

The county from the air

48 shown

Flown by the U.S. Geological Survey between 1937 and 1989, the Aerial Photo Single Frames collection is the definitive mid-century view of the land: fields, roads and rivers as the camera saw them. The Survey holds 14,225 frames inside the rectangle that bounds this county; the 48 frames below were taken over the county itself, chosen across the decades of flights (at most four a year from that rectangle), so one flight cannot crowd out the rest. The full set is free to browse and download at EarthExplorer under the dataset Aerial Photo Single Frames.

September 2018Flash FloodMortmar1 killed, $50,000Thunderstorms with very heavy rain developed across portions of eastern Riverside County during the evening hours on September 30th. The stronger storms produced intense rain that led to flash flooding to the southwest of Joshua Tree National Park and to the north of the Salton Sea. At 1925PST (2025 PDT) the California Highway Patrol reported that Box Canyon Road was closed at the Mecca Copia Trail due to flash flooding. Significant impacts were reported to have occurred further downstream. Major damage was reportedly done to the Box Canyon Road forcing the road to be closed for days. It was also reported that a man was swept to his death driving along Box Canyon Road between Interstate 10 and Highway 111. He was returning from a camping trip in Joshua Tree National Park. His damaged car was found by the road later the next day with no trace of the man to be found. A Flash Flood Warning was issued for the area at 1909MST and it remained in effect until 2215MST.

August 2008HailIdyllwild2 hurtA severe thunderstorm developed over the Fern Valley area and significantly interfered with an ongoing search and rescue operation involving two injured climbers at Suicide Rock. Several eyewitness accounts from climbers on Suicide and Tahquitz Rocks, as well as from people involved in the ongoing SAR mission, describe hailstones ranging in size from marbles to walnuts. A rescue helicopter was forced to abort a rescue attempt of the climbers and make an emergency landing after the thunderstorm moved into the area. One of the injured climbers suffered additional contusions from the hail while another person received cuts. Please note that the severe thunderstorm did not move into the area until nearly two hours after the initial (non-weather related) rock climbing accident.

July 2015Flash FloodDesert Center1 hurt, $50,000,000Aided by lingering tropical moisture from former hurricane Dolores, intense thunderstorms with torrential rain developed near Desert Center during the afternoon hours on July 19th. Based on radar estimates, over 6 inches of rain fell over several hours along and just to the south of Interstate 10, just to the west of Desert Center. According to a trained weather spotter about 4 miles west of Desert Center, the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 collapsed where they crossed a heavily flowing wash, and one vehicle drove into the hole in the collapsed bridge. The driver became trapped by crushed asphalt and needed to be rescued. The injured driver was extracted from his truck and taken to a local hospital. According to local law enforcement, Interstate 10 was closed in both directions; water was flowing over the highway and the on and off ramps were flooded. Traffic was backed up for miles and needed to be re-routed. Within a short distance of the collapsed bridge, water flowing through a wash and under the freeway severely eroded and compromised the integrity of a second bridge; the second bridge did not collapse however. Interstate 10 will be closed in both directions for quite some time, probably at least one week, as bridges on both sides of the freeway will need to be re-built. A Flash Flood Warning was issued for the area from 1621PST through 1915PST.
July 2008Flash FloodCathedral City1 hurt, $500,000Heavy rain from an early morning thunderstorm over the mountain slopes above Cathedral City caused a damaging flash flood that raced down Eagle Canyon, past Gildas Club, and onto East Palm Canyon Drive (Highway 111). At least 15-20 businesses were damaged as well as several homes at the Tramview Mobile Home Park. One home was lifted off its foundation and declared unsafe to live in. Debris consisting of rocks, a fence, mud, and tree limbs caused the closure of East Palm Canyon from Cathedral Canyon to Golf Club Drive. Several other intersection along and near East Palm Canyon were also closed. A trained weather spotter measured 1.25 inches of rain in 30 minutes with this storm.
May 2008Tornado (EF2)March Afb1 hurt, $350,000Observations from KRIV indicate that this tornado touched down on March Field at 4:42 PM, traveled approximately three miles in a west-southwest direction for 21 minutes, and had a max width of 75 yards. As the tornado crossed Interstate 215, a semi-truck was lifted 30 to 40 feet into the air and nine empty BNSF railroad cars were derailed. The driver of the semi had to be extricated using the jaws of life and was hospitalized for over a month due to moderate head injuries. The tornado also damaged the roofs of several homes and a trailer on Kuder Ave. It should be noted that another tornado developed nearby while this tornado was in progress. Based on input from Dr. Kisho Mehta and Tim Marshall, damage to the rail cars was consistent with wind gusts up to 120 mph, or an EF-2 tornado. This is the first EF-2 tornado in California since the new scale was implemented in February 2007, and the first F2 tornado in California since the 1998 Sunnyvale tornado.
September 2018Flash FloodMecca1 hurt, $200,000A thunderstorms produced radar estimated 2 to 4 inches of rain in Box Canyon near I-10 within Box Canyon. The runoff destroyed a dike operated by Coachella Valley Water District. The moisture was associated with pre Tropical Cyclone Rosa. The thunderstorm produced prolific lightning in the area. Box Canyon had a flash flood which drains from the little San Bernardino mountains. The water eventually drains into the Salton Sea. A vehicle travelling on Box Canyon road was swept away in the flash flood and the driver drowned (within PHX area of responsibility).
January 2010Heavy RainWest Palm Spgs1 hurt, $100,000Several areas of the Coachella Valley experienced urban flooding on the 21st as another round of heavy rain moved through the region. A Ross store in Palm Springs sustained large amounts of damage as a 20 by 30 foot section of roof collapsed around 945 PST. The collapse also broke pipes for the fire sprinkler system. One store employee suffered minor injuries.

January 2017Flash FloodTemecula Rnch Cal Ar1 hurtRapid water rises along Temecula Creek caused flooding in south Temecula. Firefighters rescued a woman stranded on a small island in Temecula Creek. The woman was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
February 2005LightningMoreno Valley1 hurtThunderstorms in the Inland Empire dropped widespread small hail and produced vivid lightning. A 12 year old girl was taken to the hospital after she was struck by lightning while climbing a metal ladder that was attached to a tree. The girl was thrown 5 feet through the air by the force of the lightning.
August 1999WildfireMountain Center1 hurtA wild fire rapidly grew towards the southeast. August ended, it was only 92 percent contained and had injured 1 person, consumed 3000 acres, forced the evacuation of 100 residents and campers, and closed Highways 74 and 243. No property damage was reported, but the cost of fighting the fire so far was estimated at $555,000.

Every populated place in the county

230

Named settlements recorded in the Geographic Names Information System, each with the topographic sheets covering it. Villages, hamlets and abandoned places alike. Each is shown with the nearest named watercourse or landform and the survey quadrangle it falls on.

The vanished settlements of Riverside County: the places named above that are no longer on the map.
