Original plans, construction, etc.: This house with the high basement reflects the Quaker background of the builder. The basement extends several feet above and below the ground level with ample windows. The panelling is interesting and there are the wide floor boards, summer beams, and a fireplace with the original bricks. 5. Notes on alterations and additions: Little changed. B. Historical Events Connected with the Structure: The house was bought by John Elkins in and for over a hundred years was occupied by his descendants.

It is located in that area originally described as the Third Squadron of Wesko Acre Lots at a place commonly known by the name of Micah's Pond. India Street in the early was largely occupied by the wealthier families, many of whom derived much profit from the East India trade as well as from whaling. It was first called India Row; later renamed Pearl Street, and still later changed back to India Street. Captain Stubbs was married in and built the house at that time. He was married twice but died at a very young age in He appears in the recorded deeds as "Captain", but his name does not appear under lists of whaling captains. C, Sources of Information: 1.
