The Jeremiah Bean Farmstead Manger is one of two surviving livestock feeding stations near the old barn HABS No. OH-2411-G. It is a surviving example of Allegheny plateau agricultural practices and farm construction. It was constructed by Orrville Bean and his kinfolk likely following a pattern used by his family for earlier mangers. This manger was constructed in ca. One of nine surviving historic farm features and outbuildings, it displays construction detailing and methods used in the Allegheny plateau during the nineteenth century, using locally available red oak and commercially available pine to create a structure feeding livestock in the field. Historical Context: Design of livestock mangers seems to have stayed relatively the same for many years. This manger and a similarly constructed one that is much deteriorated are made with wire nails and sawn lumber. PART II. ARCHITECTURAL INFORMATION A. General Statement 1. Architectural character: The manger is one of a complex of farmstead structures constructed in a simple, gable-roofed style. It is a later addition to the complex that employs red oak framing of actual dimensions and pine framing of nominal dimensions. 2. Description of the Exterior: 1. overall dimensions: A rectangular plan, gabled structure, this manger is 11 x tall at the sides and 11 at the peak. The structure is one bay wide and three bays deep. 2. Foundation: None. 3. Walls: Exposed frame, no exterior sheathing. 4. Structural system: The manger sits on pine joists, four joists for the three bays of the manger. Each bay of the manger has corner posts that run from the bottom of the sill to the bottom of the rafters. The ties for bays and each end of the manger are 2" x 6" pine members at the top of the manger. The manger has a floor of 1 11 x 6" oak boards running the length of the manger. The roof is supported on shaped 2" x 4" members, full depth at the gable and cut down at the sides. Framing is toe-nailed or surface nailed with wire nails. 5. Openings: Manger openings are between the angled frame members. 8. Roof: The gable roof has asphalt rolled roofing, no fascia, no overhang. C. Description of Interior: None. D. Site: The manger is south of the granary, southwest of the old barn, on the slope of the hill. Another manger, much deteriorated, of similar design is between the barn and the tractor shed. PART III.
