The most serious of them, by death, then
injury, then recorded damage. The accounts are quoted exactly as the
forecast office filed them.
Multiple homes were flooded in the area due to heavy rainfall. Two homes were destroyed, two homes sustained major damage, and several homes received minor damage. In addition, there were multiple water rescues. There was one fatality during the event. The fatality was a female who was outside trying to get to higher ground when she was swept away in the flash flooding. In addition to the fatality, there were four injuries. All of the flooding reports and the fatality occurred in the Franklin Furnace area.
Flooding that was caused by heavy rains on May 10th continued into the day on May 12th. A man wading through chest deep water along Pine Creek in southeast Scioto County Ohio was pulled under around 1000 on May 12, 2011. His body was recovered during the early afternoon of May 12, 2011.
Widespread 2 to 4 inch rains with locally higher amounts contributed to serious flooding across the county. Over 100 roads were closed including State Route 73, over 100 basements were flooded, 50 homes were flooded on the main floors, and over 100 people were evacuated due to high water.
A tornado first touched down near Davis Road and County Road 41. The storm moved northeast across this hilly area damaging several home roofs, portions of barn roofs, and downed many trees. Several mobile homes were completely destroyed. Shawnee Greenhouse sustained severe damage. Two homes were completely destroyed.
A tornado was embedded in an area of straight line winds near Wheelersburg. Trees and power lines were knocked down on vehicles, damage occurred to a few homes, and two rail cars were knocked off their tracks.
The tornado touched down along Rocky Fork Road, about 2 miles southwest of Otway. The tornado snapped and uprooted numerous trees in groves as it moved northeast along Rocky Fork Road and Highway 348. The tornado then lifted just as it hit the town of Otway, where it damaged two homes and heavily damaged a fire station. Based on the damage surveyed, the maximum estimated wind speed of this tornado was 75 miles per hour.
The tornado touched down and downed numerous branches and trees along Twin Creek-Rocky Fork Road. Some minor siding and roof damage occurred to several residences along the path with more significant damage to some outbuildings. The strongest winds were estimated to have occurred along the northern portion of the valley, where 4 to 5 large healthy trees were completely uprooted. This damage was consistent with maximum estimated wind speeds of 80 miles per hour.
The National Weather Service confirmed straight-line wind damage in Wheelersburg. An estimated 600 trees were downed or uprooted along the path of approximately five miles. A horse barn roof was torn off with another barn's roof partially damaged at the intersection of Hammerstein and Lang Slocum Road. Baseball dugouts were damaged along with a total of about six barns partially destroyed.
Hundreds of trees were knocked down across the county, including around 100 in West Portsmouth alone. Nearly every road in the county with a ridge had trees across the road. Quarter size hail also fell around Mc Dermott.
Thunderstorms with torrential rainfall caused area creeks and streams to flood county roads. One family was evacuated due to high water, and several vehicles were swept away in Minford.
Several trees and large branches were downed, minor structural damage occurred to a building, and damage to an unfinished portion of a roof occurred due to thunderstorm winds.
Numerous trees and one street sign were knocked down from Portsmouth to Wheelersburg. An old brick structure in downtown Portsmouth was demolished. Several automobiles in Portsmouth were damaged due to falling trees.
Several 100 year old trees were twisted, with numerous other trees stripped of their bark. The roof of a barn was ripped off and carried 0.5 miles to the east.
Numerous trees were downed throughout the northern portion of the county.
