This building is significant for its contribution to the commercial development of the Steele's Hill-Grafton Hill Historic District; a district which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in The district is composed mainly of late nineteenth and early twentieth century residential buildings expressed with a mix of architectural styles. Description: This is a one story, brick building that exhibits plain architectural details associated with the Commercial style. The main facade is divided into three retail bays which have been extensively altered over the years.

The only surviving original details include columns articulating the three bay divisions and large blind rectangular panels above each retail bay. The side walls abut directly to adjacent buildings. At the rear, a concrete block addition has been constructed. The interior space has been altered over the years. No significant interior architectural details survive from the original construction. At present, two commercial land uses occupy the building; a barber shop and a tavern. History: This building was constructed in as an investment by Henry Jacobs, a lawyer who resided within the Grafton Hill Historic District. The first tenants included the Schultz Brothers Grocery Store, a hair dresser, and a confectionery store.

The building contributed to a small cluster of varied commercial activities that catered to the nearby residential areas as well as to patrons who used Salem Avenue to travel from the then expanding residential suburbs into downtown Dayton. The commercial area was an active part of the historic district and nearby residential areas until the The Schultz Brothers Grocery store occupied one of the commercial bays from until They were the tenant to remain within the building the longest. Over the years, a variety of uses were housed within the building which included a hardware store, fruit store, cigar store, drug store, and restaurant.
